Rye remained silent at first, his ears laid back in thought. How similar they were... He remembered her bullies had scorned her lack of family. He had been scorned for the existence of his. They were opposites, but the same, too, were they not? It was a sad thing to be ostracized for family -- one of a rabbit's most important jobs was to create them, after all.
He closed his eyes when she pawed at his face, reveling in the touch. It had been a long time since he'd had contact with another rabbit that didn't make his fur raise with anger and disgust. He'd almost forgotten how sweet it could be, how tender...
Ah, but it was too late for him. He could forget the good things in life, the friends, the caresses, the feel of nose on nose, of breath on breath on a cold winter night, and the quiet song of doves in the wind. But he couldn't forget the bad. The hate he'd encountered in the past had filled him up, and there wasn't enough room for anything else. He couldn't change, but there was hope still for little Bluebell, wasn't there? And for her, and only her, he could be different.
"I felt a sort of kinship, I suppose," he finally replied. Then, quietly, with his head hovering just above her small form, so that his voice, as low as it was, could still be heard in the vibrations of his throat and the movements of his lips, "Family isn't only blood, you know."

Her nose twitched curiously as she blinked at him. He was so different and yet so the same. He didn't insult her, he didn't chase her away from food or tell her scary stories that gave her nightmares. He helped clean her fur and made her feel comfortable. This... this... in her mind, was what family was supposed to feel like! All those times she spent daydreaming about fitting in with someone who looked like you, talked like you, walked like you..... so what if Rye had different fur colors... they had some colors in common... and that was good enough for her.
A small smile spread again over her muzzle, her little bunny nose wiggling as she gently touched a paw to his nose. "Your right. Family isn't only blood." she said and gave his nose a tender pat. If anything good came from this horrid day.... she now had someone to call family.. true family.. inside the warren. She couldn't help but let out a tiny giggle, she felt like the luckiest rabbit in all of the down and not even Inle' was going to take that feeling from her right that very moment.

Rye softened at the smile, the touch, the words, the laughter... He thought, from this moment on, they would be enough for him. Her happiness would be his own, and he would do all he could to shield it.
Nodding in response, he lay his head down beside her. He could have said more, could have voiced the fact that they were family now, that they would be together for themselves as well as each other, always -- but, did he really need to?
He released a long sigh. It was not one of exasperation, but one of contentment, and he looked fondly at the outskirter beside him.
"Sleep now," he said. It was just as unintentionally demanding -- even though he had gone through such change in his mind, it would still take some time for the rest of him to catch up -- but it was, perhaps, more gentle than he had ever been before.
"I'll protect you."

His words echoed in her ears and seeped deep down into her chest where they burned a hole into her heart and settled there, taking root and preparing to bloom, like a tiny seed into the freshly turned earth. Her smile softened as she began to let herself slowly drift off into slumber. "And I you." she said in a yawn, her little two colored eyes shutting tightly as she slipped into dreamland. Even if she couldn't physically protect him very well, she had made up her mind to be there for him always, whether he liked it or not.....and that was good enough for her.
