Auri spends a few minutes staring at some blackberries, breathing deeply. If her family was in front of him, he might not manage the calm he was seeking. But she seemed to want to put her past behind her. He needed to respect that.
He had put his mother's death when he was in a basket behind him. Sometimes the sympathy of others about it hurt worse than the actual loss. So, if he wanted to be her friend, he needed to respect that for her, it was in the past. But that didn't make it easier.
A few massive bites of blackberries, which included some branch that he chewed on just to take his frustrations out on something, helped give Auri the time he needed. When he raised his head to look at Naomi, he was mostly calm. He was good at not pitying others, he hated to be pitied, so it was easy not to pity her. But he had grown a measure of respect for her that was deeper than he could quite understand.
With a very soft sigh, Auri moved to face Naomi. Looking into her eyes, "I am very glad to have met you. I admire your strength and poise and forgiving nature. I . . . " Closing his eyes he leans his head forward to rest along her neck. "Maybe you don't have a birth family, but since we're both orphans, though in different ways, maybe we can be each other's family. Even after I find out what happened to my sibling. I . . . You deserve to have someone that you know will always be there for you."
Stepping back to shake his head slightly, "That just sounded . . . pretentious. I mean . . . I know you have Fluffy, I'm not trying to . . . Bother, I'm making a hash of this. I just . . . " Auri looks up into Naomi's eyes again. "I won't abandon you. If or when you want to leave, I'll understand. But . . . as long as I live, you'll have family who will take you in." Wincing at the way it still sounded so . . . corny, Auri hoped that she understood the sentiment behind his words.

As she saw Auri take a bite of the berries, Naomi took another of her own, nibbling at some of the smaller clusters with less thorns. The taste in her mouth made her happy and excited to try something new. She knew she had avoided these before, unsure if she was they were safe to be eaten or not.
"Although you admire me, there are many reasons why you should be admired too. I hope you know that." She smiled at him. "Your determination and love for your sibling... If they're out there, we'll find them and then let them know how far you've gone to seek them out." Naomi had a gut feeling that things would end well. She felt as though there was no reason for tales like these to end badly.
Naomi felt his warmth along her neck as they just paused there for a moment. The words that Auri spoke sunk in slowly and her smile couldn't help but broaden. She looked around at him and there were sparkles in her eyes. It was easy to tell, even without words, that she was very pleased and happy at the thought. "I'd love that. I'm pretty sure Fluffy would love that too. She's a bit rough on the edges sometimes, but she means well."
She nodded before speaking again. "I'll be there for you too. Always. Even if my body gives out before we can find your sibling... I'll be with you in spirit!" Naomi changed her position and nuzzled his neck. Auri reaches out and gently bites a fold of skin at her neck. "No talk like that! You're stronger than you think, but if you don't believe it, you might just think yourself into faltering. Here you are, not eating until you can't go any further, not knowing half the things that are good to eat. You might never be able to walk past sundown, but if we start taking better care of you, you might just surprise yourself at how good you feel!"
He blows his breath out through his nose, stirring a few strands of hair that have fallen into his face. "Okay, so apparently I woke up on the pretentious side of the bush this morning. I'm sorry. But . . . no more talking about what you can't do!" Auri nuzzles Naomi's neck where he had just nipped at her.
With a sigh he goes back to eating, "We should probably finish eating and keep moving. Who knows, maybe I'll spot something else new and delicious for you to try today."ATh e a r t Not a problem. I'm glad you're back.

Naomi was a bit taken aback at first with the nibble on her shoulder, but she smiled at the words Auri spoke. "Well, I lost strength in one way, but gained it in another, right?" She playfully nipped him back in the same area that he had just done to her. "I've come to terms with what the Great Spirit gave me, no matter how depressing some may see it as."
She nodded and nuzzled him again. "Can't really be happy without experience all the sad stuff with it!" Naomi was glad to have another by her side, another that wasn't going to leave her no matter what. She had never told Fluffy, but there were times at the end of the day where Naomi feared that her body would not 'reset' and she would be stuck sitting in a spot alone.
"I think I've had enough!" Well, she said that but took another few bites and chewing them heartily until there was more juice than anything in her mouth. Naomi swallowed and then grinned. "I wouldn't want to get too full before getting the chance to try something else, right?"

Auri chuckles softly. "Get to a point where you are well satisfied, but no so full you can't walk. There's no telling when we'll next find something and it's not good to go hungry waiting. Besides, most things we could find this time of year, with the exception of berries, can travel well."
"As for being happy without the sad, you're right. Sorrow makes joy the sweeter. But dwelling on the bad isn't going to make it better or make it go away. Know it's there, build yourself from it, but don't let it occupy every thought." He shakes his head again.
"Okay, so no more talking from me today! I seem to make a hash of it. I'm not judging you, I know it sounds like it. You have so much strength I'm kind of in awe. But . . . I want you to be happy."
"There might be a storm just over the horizon, but I'm not going to dwell on how miserable it might make me until it's here and soaking me right through to the bone. And when it is here, I'll be looking for a place to stay dry and warm and enjoy the company of those I'm with." Auri reaches over to nuzzle Naomi. "We can't do anything about the storms in our lives, but decide how they will affect us. They can make us wet and cold, but only can choose if we're miserable. I just . . . don't want to see you miserable."
To hide his blush, he takes another large bite of berries. The few stems that join the sweet fruit in his mouth largely ignored.

Secretly, Naomi was wishing inside that they would run into a lot more interesting foods. It would definitely be better for her to eat more; it was just because she got to try something new that made her all the more curious. She reluctantly took a few more bites, despite still loving the taste.
Naomi laughed. "There's nothing wrong with talking more. It helps the day go by without being dull!" She didn't mind being judged because what he said was true. Most of it she had realized when she was alone, but Auri didn't need to know that. All he needed to know was that his caring words made her extremely happy. "I'm just happy you care for me so much already."
"We can always be miserable together? That way I don't have to feel bad that you're the only one feeling miserable." It was an odd thought, but Naomi felt like something like that would be better shared. "Kind of like... If I were happy, but you were not, I'd rather be miserable than be happy. And I'm pretty sure you'd think the same."
She nudged up Auri's head as he still had berries in his mouth. "I wouldn't want you to be miserable as much as you wouldn't want me to be."

Auri smiles as he swallows his mouth-full of berries. He lays his cheek alongside hers, eyes closed for a moment. "I'd rather we were both happy and neither of us miserable."
With a sigh as he hears the scream of Tiger overhead, "We should finish though and get moving. Or we might just have 'encouragement' from above."
Another moment passes as he inhales deeply of her scent before he moves again. Auri takes one last mouthful of blackberries, his tongue already stained dark by their juices. Then, he moves back towards the trail. "Fluffy's probably also anxious for us to get moving. I'm sure we're already off schedule for your normal travels. I'm sorry, I just . . . I'm glad to be traveling with you."
