Eva made a face, though she honestly looked more amused than insulted. "Don't worry, I'm...pretty sure that won't happen." She informed him with a chuckle, "I like hugging and clinging to people...but only as long as they're familiar. Random strangers in a bar are definitely a no."
...Or so she hoped, at least. Maybe she had this mentality when she was sober, but if she was drunk...
Quirking a brow, she tilted her head and smiled, looking inquisitive. "What's wrong? The family comment surprising you?" Folding her arms on the table, she gave a little shrug. "I guess I mean...it's kind of nice having people accept you. I'm not sure how what it was like for you in Las Vegas, but living in a tiny town...I got plenty of suspicious looks and whispers directed my way. It's nice to be away from all that."
Though she'd be lying if she were to claim that she didn't miss her parents.

Lex made a small grumble in the back of his throat; no one knew how they acted when they got drunk for the first time. She might have been one of the lucky ones who just got really happy but kept her wits about her. Lex had met a few of those - they were fun, and totally not putty in his hands. He actually had to do a bit more than just sweet talk - he had to actually buy them drinks.
"Ah...yeah, a little." Lex admitted, an honestly bemused smile making it's way onto the man's face. "I never really made it known to anyone but my parents I saw things...and the only one that believed me was driven away by the other." A snort and a wave of his hand. Nothing big - or at least that's how he wanted it to seem. "The shadows lurked around in the clubs though - always in the corners and on the dance floor. I ignored them as best I could."
Enough about him. He hated talking about him.
"Glad to know you're away from the judgement - you're too sweet of a girl for that nastiness."

"Oh." That was all that she said, her expression becoming sympathetic as he spoke of his parents. Pretty much everyone here had some kind of troubles in their past--or at least, Eva thought so. She wasn't sure why else anyone would be willing to sign up for Deus Ex had they not wanted to escape from something at home. If she had had a happy life despite the shadows and the whispers, would she have come here?
...No, probably not. That being said, she would have missed out on meeting some people who were very dear to her now.
But that was enough about the gloomy conversation. Grinning, she shrugged her shoulders. "Well, you can never get away from it completely. I mean, I'm in the Death division. I have--had--Caelius as my division head. Have you ever had to talk to that man one on one?" She made a face.

Lex inwardly sighed; he'd let out more than he'd wanted to in that little spiel, and now Eva was giving him a sympathy look. He really didn't like being viewed in a sympathetic way; he wasn't good at the tragic past bad boy moniker. But, he couldn't exactly reject her sympathy, could he? He had to opt to accept it reluctantly, smiling weakly.
"Mmmm, can't say I've ever had the pleasure of talking to your boss. I just know he probably wasn't playing with a full deck of cards." The dissatisfaction with the Death lead's actions was very much apparent in Lex's voice. His willingness to just sacrifice trainees for the 'greater good' was complete horse crap in the Life trainee's mind. Poor Ryan...
"Then again, I'm sure the good Doctor doesn't have the best reputation around."

For once, the girl's bright smile faded into a little grimace at the mention of Caelius being...a few cards short from a full deck. "Let me be frank--Caelius was an asshat." She sighed, her voice flat, "I can't tell you the number of times he's put people in danger for his own whims. Have you tried the Death minesweeper training? Puppy and I had a promotion mission that was just like that...only we had to be his guinea pigs and do it without any golems."
She could still remember the terror from almost suffocating in that pit filling with sand.
"I can't say much about the Doctor," Eva admitted, "But I think I like him better than I did Caelius."

Lex gave Eva a look of honest shock and surprise - and a bit of confusion thanks to the 'puppy' bit. He'd find that out later, he supposed.
He'd used them as test dummies for live mines. Without golems. Atrocious, really. The disgust was clear on the man's face as he shook his head sadly. Good riddens, he thought. That wasn't a leader - a leader would put himself on the front line, and make himself the test dummy. Or, better yet - not make a golem free minefield. Death was supposed to be the intelligence division, after all.
A sigh, and Lex just let the thoughts go. Not worth thinking on. "I...can't say much about my boss either. He only explained the basics to me, when I first woke up." He said, expression a neutral smile. "Very intelligent man; great taste in oak furniture."

"He scolded the hunter in charge of the task because the traps were too slow," She added with a scowl. After a moment passed though, her lips suddenly turned upwards in a smile as she leaned back in her seat. "Puppy and I made it though. I don't think he was happy, but..." She trailed off with a victorious grin--clearly she was still very proud of that fact.
Intelligent, huh? "Haha, maybe I should talk to the good doctor some more someday, then," Eva mused, figuring that having a sane division head somewhere was a good thing. Clarice, she had heard, had a good head on her shoulders though. Shaking away these thoughts, Eva turned back to grin at the man in front of her. "Glad you could join us, though! I mean, I'm not glad that you've been shoved into all this danger and all that, but you seem like a good and level-headed guy, and we can always use that here."

"Well, I'm glad to be here." Lex replied, smiling gently. He was glad to be here, really. Away from the shadows all the time - away from his witch of a mother, away from the sleezy drunks who tried to get him to give them free drinks. He missed his home though; the clubs and the bedrooms and the mixed drinks. He missed the simple joys of just walking down the street and meeting someone from a few nights ago, or grabbing a drink with some of his closer acquaintances. A sad smile passed on his face, before he covered it up with a big one. "I'm happy to have met you, at least."
DING! went the oven telling the two that their cake was ready. Mmm, cake.
Lex frowned though, before just giving Eva a very confused look. She kept mentioning Puppy...who was puppy? Her boyfriend? This sweet thing, with a boyfriend? Lucky chump; Lex thought. He did have to ask, though. "Eva....who is Puppy?"

Eva perked up at the ding, pushing her chair back and standing up. However, before heading back to the kitchen, she moved over to where the man sat and leaned down to give him a one-armed hug. "Ah ha, I'm happy to have met you too! Well, then, a few months late, but...welcome to Deus Ex, Lex, from me to you."
She ruffled his hair as she drew back, and then propped a hand up on her hip. She opened her mouth--doubtlessly to suggest that they go and check up on the cake--when the man suddenly asked a question that caught her off guard. There was a moment of blank staring, and then Eva laugh.
"Sorry, that would be Otto! I don't know if you've met him yet? Blond hair, blue eyes..." Her smile became rather wry, "Grumpy, but with a good heart."

Lex smiled then, rolling his eyes at the ruffled hair as he smoothed it back down. So, puppy was Otto - Lex liked Otto. "Ah, Otto! Yeah, I know him - we cleaned out the oven together one day. Good kid, really." The taller man chuckled and nodded. "But yes, he is very much a grump." He'd straighten up over time, though. Give him some space to bloom, and he'd be the most alluring flower in the garden.
Other than Lex, of course.
Making his way to the kitchen, Lex ruffled Eva's hair as he passed by her to the oven, pulling out a perfectly cooked cake. He took a whiff and smiled - vanilla; his favorite non booze flavor. If he could, he'd have made a coffee rum cake.
"Alright, now just for this..." Lex took some premade frosting out of the fridge, along with the strawberry lime jelly he'd made. He smiled as he began to mix both components, making a pink frosting.
"Would you like to help me spread?" He offered Eva, holding up a rubber spatula.

Oh ho, so that had already met! The young woman grinned when Lex called him a good kid--so he had left a good impression, that was good!--and she gave a cheerful nod as she turned to follow him into the kitchen. "Yup! Though--hey!"
Despite the fact she had done so to him a few moments earlier, Eva automatically let out a protesting whine and playful swat when he ruffled her hair. Smoothing it down, she moved forward to hover beside him, her eyes lighting up at the cake was pulled out of the oven. "Oh--hey, it actually looks pretty good! I was worried that I had somehow messed up the mixing process!"
What a relief that she didn't! It smelled pretty good too, actually. She turned to watch Lex as he went to retrieve things from the fridge and mix them, and when he held up the spatula, she reached out with a grin to take it.
"Don't mind if I do."

Applying the frosting to his side of the cake, Lex smiled serenely. Yes, baking with a rather adorable girl - not an expected thing, but a very pleasant surprise. New acquaintances were always nice - and the man was sure he could call on Eva whenever he needed some pep or cheer in his life.
Once they were both done applying the pink frosting, Lex cut three slices out , putting them on plates and getting out forks. He handed Eva her's with a smile, and said "Dig in!" He took a bit of it, savoring the sweet morsel. MM, just enough vanilla - and the combination of strawberries and limes actually worked! He gave an appreciative nod before he spoke again.
"That other piece is for Otto - if you could take it to him? Oh, and feel free to take the rest of the cake too. If not, I'm just going to put it in the communal fridge for everyone to eat." He asked, taking another bite of cake. One slice was good enough for him - too many baked goods and he'd lose muscle definition - which was bad.

Eva looked...well, er, very focused as she worked on icing the cake. Brows furrowed, her tongue poked out from the corner of her lips as she worked on icing her side of the cake, trying to keep the layer as even and smooth as possible. She went as far as to crouch down stare at the cake at eye-level, one eye closed as she examined her work. It was...not too bad, right?
She straightened up, hovering around Lex like an eager puppy as he cut the cake. Taking the offered plate, Eva chirped a cheerful thank you before taking the first bite. It tasted as good as it looked, if not even better. This slice, she decided, could be considered her birthday cake for this year. A few days late, but considering how good it was, it was definitely worth the wait. The fact that she got to help in the making of the cake was a huge added bonus.
Turning to eye the third piece, Eva grinned. "Oh--yeah, of course! Puppy will love this!" She beamed up at Lex, finishing off her slice before picking up the extra one and covering the top with a little bit of saran wrap, just in case some pesky flies tried to get at it while she was delivering it. At the offer of taking the rest of the cake, Eva laughed and shook her head.
"Aah, as amazing as it is, I don't think even I could eat that much cake. We should share your masterpiece with everyone!" She winked at him, and then motioned towards the plate she was holding, "I should get this to Puppy while it's still fresh. Thanks for letting me help, Lex!" She reached up with her free hand to give the man a hug, and with a grin and wave, scurried away to deliver the treat.
