A rude little prat, wasn't he? The gypsy smirked. "I can assure you, I have no such pastime. And I wouldn't expect you to know me, as I've only just arrived."

She did not feel particularly inclined to introduce herself, though the question was implied. He could do the honors. It was clear that the guardian was pleased his human was here, but Rajani was reserving her judgement. He might prove be amusing, or he might be yet another obnoxious bloke who thought too highly of himself. Time would tell.

More thoughtless than rude; rude would be looking down his nose at her, would be deliberately insulting. No. Paul was just careless, sheltered enough that he didn't realize the possible sting of his words. With a huff, he kicked at the basket, definitely seeming the prat part, at least -- until he focused back on Samael and made a little sound, reaching up to rub at his nose.

"He always seems to spot other Guardians on the property. I don't know how he does that." And it was, at least, a good nose rub, Samael leaning in warm against his shivering-Chosen's side. "Nor why. They can't speak, to my knowledge...just the company, perhaps."

"As good a guess as any," she supposed, leaning against Oberon more out of laziness than due to the weather.

Really, Rajani could hardly believe that she was standing there making small talk with a lord in a forest in the middle of the night. It was, of course, neither the forest nor the time nor the person that was the issue. It was the small talk. The gypsy was vaguely amused that she had been engaging in it so frequently of late when a year ago she had done her best to ignore the rest of humanity as much as she could afford. Oh, well. It was part of her job, now, and at least it was a topic that was of interest to her.

"This lad seems aware of others of his kind, too."

"Is that why you're wandering the outskirts of my territory?" So, maybe not quite so much small talk as she thought it had been. Paul made it casual, relatively calm, his head tilted to the side so that he could watch her out of the corner of his eye. Ascertaining motives, perhaps, digging for thieves...

"Sensed another Guardian nearby and thought you'd have a look?"

She raised a brow and gave him an amused, if crooked, smile. "I was not aware that this was your land," she informed him honestly enough. Still, she supposed that he did have the right to know what she was doing there. Besides, he could cause trouble if he did not want her there.

"Not at all. Just wanted to go for a walk. Meeting your boy was a happy coincidence."

"Uh huh." He leaned in against Samael for another moment, eyes tracking over the pair of them, likely unbelieving, and then straightened again. One hand held out toward Oberon in a curious sort of way, an offering. He has never seen another Guardian, besides Spokelse, and has certainly never been able to touch one before.

His hand smells like cheese and honey and lavender -- smells cleaner than, likely, any the Guardian has ever come across before. Even for a noble, Paul is fastidious. "Bit cold for a jaunt through the woods..."

Oberon's ears swiveled forward and back before he sniffed in Paul's general direction. He did not approach the stranger, though, and kept a sharp eye on the pair of them.

Rajani shrugged. "The cold doesn't bother me, and I was bored." She regarded him through narrowed eyes. "You're a suspicious one, aren't you? I assure you I'm not here for any nefarious purpose."

For just another moment, he looked her over; head tipped and chin thrust out, unsure what to make of a strange woman out on the woods. For another man, it might have been an intriguing proposition. For Paul, it was just --

"Boring." And with that, he leaned down to grab his basket, huffing out a breath at the weight of it, and turned his attention onto Samael. Apparently the slight tip of his Guardian's antlers in his direction meant consent because he immediately tied the basket to his back. Didn't have to carry it all the way home, at least.

"I wish you well." It came out almost mocking, though, as he raised his eyebrows and his shoulders both, obviously prepared for the long trek back up the hill toward home.

Most gypsies might be able to turn the other cheek. They were good at ignoring jabs and barbs. They could hold onto an insult and pay it back later. Rajani was good at one of those. Unfortunately, this was not a situation where paying an offense back later was an option. Who knew if she would ever meet him again, and in a small town like this, it would be obvious who the culprit was. Assuming that there was anything in his estate worth taking in the first place.

Besides, this gypsy was never good at following the rules. She was too proud by far. So, instead of meekly bowing her head and walking away, she smiled, sweet and just shy of blatantly mocking. "I wouldn't want to keep you from your frivolity," she said. "After all, my company can hardly live up to a goat-girl's." She glanced pointedly at his basket and turned to go back to the village.

Her calculation was flawed -- because it only worked if it insulted, if it actually penetrated Paul's easy exterior. As it was he shrugged at her, indifferently, either unworried by the term 'frivolity' or indifferent to it, and trudged up away in the snow, back toward home. He was, after all, inwardly at least, disappointed that she wasn't Petra. Petra would have been entertaining, if frustrating...

"Enjoy your midnight walk." There was nothing mean to this, just dismissive, and as he started back through the trees, he seemed clueless as to the fact that she was being vindictive. It was only Samael who turned a stern, maybe-disappointed look back on her before following his chosen away.
