It was wondrous, really, that they had been able to get so far still beneath the ground. One would have thought the caves beneath the Swamp would have filled in or something after so many years. Had this been any other time, she would have loved to chart them and explore, see what fascinations the rocks beneath the Motherfather held -- but of course, all such wonders paled in comparison to the prospect of the world above.

It was there that they were going, had chosen to go. Following Buried Alive, she'd even managed to make it to the front of the group, brushing past shoulders -- Thief, Take Root (and Take Flight), Pulse, Ghost, Soundless Voice -- the names she'd committed to memory long before. Ghost had beaten them, in her silent way, and her tail fidgeted in anticipation.

Her turn came moments later. Steps both cautious and sure drew her forward, shoulder brushing the rear flank of her bolder friend, and suddenly the world was flooded with white, a light more blinding than she'd dared to dream, for she had only ever seen the night. She froze, from both fear and awe, to let her eyes adjust, but her senses wasted no time.

The air here was so different, warmer than the cold of the mountains, wetter too. The smells. Vibrant. Fresh, and wet again. Scents of plants and kin washed over her, familiar in that vague way that a plant smelled like a plant and a creature a creature, but foreign in every other sense. Beneath her hooves, the ground sank slightly beneath her weight.

And then she saw them. As the light became not so blindingly white, and the shifting shadows of the Others emerged in ghostly shapes more sensed than seen, she found herself in one of those rare moments where even she was lost for words. Eyes, pairs upon pairs of glowing eyes, floating in the grey surreality of daylight. Fireflies.

There was one word she could think of, though, and that was 'exciting'! Absolutely astounding in every way imaginable. Entrance into a whole new universe-- one very foreign and different from her own.

She did not have time to be shy, no. Digger heard the other kin, despite not being able to see any real glows. It was good enough for her.

"Come on, get goin', everyone!" She squeezed and shoved past her Zikwa comrades. All of these new sensations bombarded her, and her nose flared nonstop at the new scents.

"Hello!" Digger called out. Time to get things moving. Digger noticed the other Zikwa trying to say something, but they were way too quiet and that wouldn't do.

"You owe me one. I don't care if it's the same one, but you owe me one." It's low and rough -- because Nettle can see there is excitement happening around them, can tell that soon the other Stag's attention will be drawn away, and he wants the last word before it is.

"This sort of behavior is unacceptable of someone your age." A hiss. Something someone should tell Nettle, every now and then...

--------

And he is, of course, right. Ghost has made her appearance, and Pulse; Take Root coming above ground. Willow has them on three sides, and that makes her turn in place, tugging flowers to pieces and scattering them as she does, cursing low under her breath. In moments, that majestic posture is destroyed, Ghost taking a gentle step back away from her so that she will not be trampled in the process. Her head turns, to take on the familiar pink glow of one of her siblings, but beyond there are more shapes. What does he do about that?

"...no interrupting. Ah. This is why we're here..." But Willow sounds uncertain about this.

Take Root turned her ears towards Digger without moving her head, a light smile curving her wrinkled features. "At least she's eager, yes?" she queried to the gentle voice that had spoken so near by, barely making out the color of Hero's heat. He was bigger than she is, sturdier, solid; were she any less strong in her conviction to be above ground, she might have wilted in his presence.

"Kimeti," she repeated, the word no stranger to her. "You sound lovely. I -- we are the Zikwa." Her sightless eyes could not see the smile, but she could hear it, and it made all the difference. Emboldened, she arched her wrinkled neck (to sounds of protest of the bat on her back, though she paid him no mind) and lightly touched her slender nose to where she thought he was -- and approximately nosed his neck. "I am Take Root, and I was meant to come here, to the bosom of the Swamp." She took in his scent slow and cautious; he was earthy but cool, wind-washed and night-clad. It wasn't entirely unpleasant. "Take Flight is less interested in introductions, I apologize."

The bat lifted his head and yawned toothily in response.

"But what are you and your brethren doing here...?" Her question was kind and curious, tail swaying in slow archs behind herself.

As they walked out, her steps faltered and she fell against a strange smelling being. "Sorry." Using her nose to get her feet back under her, Soundless shoved against the stag's leg. The shifting of hooves all over the place had her ears and head swiveling in each direction. "So much...so many around."

User ImageRising like ghosts from the bosom of the Motherfather herself, the zikwa came, Breeze narrated to himself. While he was staring wonderingly, one of them stumbled right into his side! "Oh, it's quite alright," he said, keeping his voice low and reassuring. They were small, and seemed so timid, and he felt a strange sort of fatherly concern welling up in his heart.

One zikwa broke the pattern of low and timid voices, and Breeze's eye was immediately drawn to heeer, well, where hers would be. That was kinda weird, but he could live with that. After making sure the first he met was steady on her feet, he turned to meet the dark-pelted, purple-glowing, little doe. Trying not to loom too tall or too close over either of them, Breeze said, "Hello yourself! Welcome home, cousins."

The buck could not help but notice how this... zikwa.... touched a lot. Maybe she could not see.... his thoughts were confirmed when she touched the middle of his neck, about where his throat was. Anywhere else, he thought, and she would have only felt hair.

Hero stood very still, as if she were a skittish foxbun that he didn't want to spook. A giggle was loosed, despite his efforts - but her soft skin tickled there! "It is a pleasure to meet you, Take Root. I am Hero, and I only followed one of the Legendary to this spot, I have no idea why we have all gathered - although Ghost Thistle's mound is very important in its own right."

He looked as more emerged. The buck shook his head in awe, his protective talisman shifting ever so slightly. "I cannot imagine... all this time... you were -literally - right under own noses! Did you decide to wait until the kiokote, acha, and totoma, arrived before making your appearance?" his voice teased ever so slightly. When he thought about it, it made sense. These zikwa appeared so much weaker... perhaps they would need some help to get used to the swamp.

The buck eyed Adventure - it just gave him its typically mischievous toothy grin. Yes, there were lots of dangers here.

Ever since he had made the decision, he had wondered what it would be like and how the kin from above would take to their arrival. But fear was a necessary emotion and he had conquered it with each step. Now as he slipped out from the warm huddle below, his dear friend at his flank and many of his fellow travelers already getting their bearing the world above, he felt content. He had passed the challenge he had set for himself. He was here, finally. The earth had allowed him to leave her protective belly.

His nose touched Firefly’s cheek briefly, giving her reassurance of his presence and also to share her wonder, and then he allowed himself to pay full attention to his surroundings. They had an audience. Quietly he studied both the glow and the darkness, felt the wash of body heat across his side and began to paint a picture of the world. The Swamp was marvelous. The very scent of it was fresh and new and the touch of its gentle wet, warmth like a caress.

Buried Alive was pleased and those who knew him would be able to tell without him needing to speak a word. He did not seek out any of the surrounding kin just yet, but his posture was open for any that wished to approach.

The zikwa bobs its head in a nod to Wood Spider, and then speaks -- Spider can't help but wonder at Pulse's odd breathless voice (she had met another kimeti with a voice like that, but he had been kicked in the throat), "Thank you for welcoming us -- we will meet again, I must find my friends."

Pulse is not normally this awkward, but rising to the surface of the swamp to find a party going on is awkward indeed. The zikwa makes a blurry, haphazard way through the press of kin, trying to find where to put feet on ground that shifts and moves under your weight. Eventually, following the sound of familiar voices, Pulse puts a velvet nose against Ghost's flank and then smiles at her: "I thought I heard you. And the others." A pause. "I smell flowers."

Longstride laughs -- with his throaty voice others might be swayed into forgiving him, but perhaps not so Nettle. It makes it more amusing, that's for sure. "Someone my age? I'm not half as experienced as you, Nettle." Longstride grins. "But if I find some gryphon eggs, you'll be the first to know."

Oh, greetings! Digger lifted her right hoof, and then the left in what would be like a trot. The one welcoming her had some glow about him, albeit not much. He said welcome home to all the Zikwa. She supposed that, yes, this really was the Zikwa's home!

"Thank you!" She laughed in reply. How could you be so worried or shy or anything but exceedingly happy and excited in this situation?

Digger craned her neck out to sniff at Breeze, taking in his scent to remember who he was. She didn't think that was rude, or anything. How else was she going to know!

"I'm Digger," she stated triumphantly, pushing her chest out. "It is so, soooo wonderful to meet the Kimeti! And, um, everyone! And experience this! And this air and--!" Digger went on a small tangent to no one in particular, but she needed a way to get out all this energy.

There were so many new others out there. It was hard to see most of them. They didn't glow like they did but oh it was a sight.

"There are so many others here, aren't there."

The Zikwa uttered a soft sound of amusement, ears flicking two and fro as she listened between Hero's voice and the arrival of her brethren. She sidestepped with grace lest she was in their way, keeping her head mostly facing the buck. "You roam because you can?" Take Root chuckled, finally turning to 'look' in the direction of her kin's voices. She could 'see' them well enough - their bright colors distinct even to her sightless eyes - but the others, she only caught wisps and trails of. Some of the Kimeti seemed to glow in places, but it was impossible to distinguish who from what while others were yet arriving.

"It's very nice to meet you, Hero." She smiled, then, tossing her head and shaking out her imaginary mane. "Perhaps we did," she responded in an almost coy tone, mostly amused at the notion of waiting their turn, like some dramatic turn of events. "It was simply time for us to return. Most of us are still there, Beneath, but we...we hear the call of the Swamp and we answer."

Those of them that were brave enough, anyway. Hearing her sister's softer voice behind herself, her ears flickered back again. "Come, my friend," she beckoned to Creeping Moss, "Come meet our lost kin."

With a small smile, it wasn't as loud as below ground, enclosed with the rest. There were some light glows, now that she looked a bit closer. "Thank you...cousin. This is your home?" They had made that quite clear to Swarm as she rose to her hooves, casually shrugging off the last vestiges of sleep and followed in the wake of the Legendaries. This was merely another chance to learn for her and something new to investigate. The doe with her every move deliberately and her passage through the swamp almost silent, was ready to discover more of her heritage. Behind her Brother and Sister followed, as they always did.

Hero's grin just kept coming back. These zikwa were quite entertaining! In the back of his mind, he wondered how many really were still down there.... and how vast it must be.... but he had no intentions of taking a look for himself. The buck shuttered a bit at the thought. "Lost, hugh?" the buck smiled towards the one Take Root meant - another female, much more brightly colored, but still that now tell-tale glow.

"I guess we are the lost ones. I am Hero, and..." he looked around, noticing how the zikwa were getting along with the kimeti, "...I guess the Swamp welcomes you back, as do we."
