Despite what Marissa might think, Michael could take things seriously when he wanted, and just gave her an exasperated look when she countered her own comment. No, he was too busy thinking about how this could happen. How could she just... magically turn into a knight? Well, he’d done pretty much the same... He had been distracted by a youma as well and just happened to not be paying attention to what he was picking up.

Sure enough, she was in a similar situation.

“Okay okay!” he shouted, trying to get her to calm down as he aimed his attack at the youma once more. “We’ll need to kill this thing. It’s not like a normal living thing,” he reassured her. “It’ll turn into dust once it’s dead.”

Hopefully she wouldn’t be super against giving him a hand. It was a monster after all. “It’s called a youma, and they’re controlled by a group called the Negaverse... I’ll explain things after we get rid of it,” he promised, using up what was left of his magic, and taking his storm glass and using it as a make-shift meteor hammer-like weapon, swinging it down on the youma. The glass broke and the youma let out an angry roar as Sessrumnir jumped out of its way.

“Not normal? No s**t it’s not normal.”

Marissa was trying her best to remain calm. After her outburst she was at least able to focus on the situation at hand, which was… probably the strangest situation she’d ever found herself in, and she happened to think she’d been through a lot in twenty-seven thirty-seven years. It was rather difficult to go from assuming monsters didn’t exist to having one right in front of you and being forced to reevaluate some of the things you’d come to believe over the course of an entire life. She’d manage it eventually, but the first few minutes… hell, probably the first few hours, if not the first few days, were going to be rather difficult.

She was also beginning to get the feeling that she shouldn’t be thinking of herself as Marissa when she was like this, but she’d come back to that later.

“Nega-what?” she asked, more confused by the second—and the more confused she was, the harder it was not to think that this wasn’t some huge cosmic joke.

Whatever. Whether or not she believed any of this stuff didn’t mean she couldn’t do something about it.

A teapot certainly wasn’t going to do much against something of that size. Once it split apart that’d be the end of that weapon, and who was to say she’d even remain like this once the teapot was gone? Odd as it was, it did seem to have been the catalyst, and while she didn’t quite understand anything Michael was telling her she somehow knew that this was… right. She was this person, and this teapot was somehow related to who this person was.

Right. Okay then. She needed something else.

There wasn’t much in the area—nothing more than one might expect to find in a random alleyway. Garbage had spilt out over the sidewalk when the mons—… youma… came bursting through, but rotting food wasn’t likely to do much of anything. There was a broken coat hanger, a couple of plastic bottles, a few crumpled beer cans, and other scattered debris.

“s**t,” she muttered to herself. “s**t, s**t, s**t.”

Michael jumped out of the way as the monster lunged after him, but when its prey continued to evade it the thing suddenly changed course and turned on her. Marissa felt the briefest jolt of fear—though she would never admit that she may have been afraid, because she was an adult and could generally handle herself pretty well—and nearly backed up a few steps when it began to draw closer. Instinct, however, decided upon a different course, and she unexpectedly lashed out to land a hard kick in its face.

And another.

And another.

And another.

”s**t...” Sessrumnir mumbled to himself as he watched the new knight take on the youma with her heel. He certainly wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of a kick of hers...

“Okay, okay, Princess, I think you’ve--” he started, trying to get her attention before POOF, the youma burst into a cloud of dust, the rapid combo-attack of her heels apparently enough to do the trick in the end.

Well, clearly he’d helped out by ruining his bike, but that was another issue entirely.

Brushing off his own injuries, Sessrumnir slowly made his way over to the figure of the woman who had been Marissa a few minutes ago. “Well, that could have been done better, but not bad for your first one,” he said with a shrug, completely ignoring the fact that he may have ruined his bike.

“So... what’s your name?”

A small grin slowly formed on his face, watching and waiting for her to realize just what he was asking. Waiting for that moment in which everything will click into place.

As much as he hated that someone now knew his identity, he also knew she wouldn’t spill the beans to anyone if she didn’t want hers revealed as well.

It was the “Princess” that grabbed her attention more than anything else, the sort of snide or backhanded nickname that either had her rolling her eyes or set her teeth on edge depending on who voiced it. With Michael, under more normal circumstances, it would have been the former; he was just an a** looking for a good time, not quite the sleaze she would have been tempted to punch in the face. Still, with the way things were going at the moment, she was a bit on edge already as it was, and the look she gave him might have been meaner than she would have otherwise intended.

She gave a slight start only seconds later, as the youma exploded into a cloud of… something—dust, ash, some other similar substance, she really had no idea. The point, she supposed, was that it was gone, defeated, finally, by nothing more than a kick in the face.

Completely anticlimactic, in her opinion.

Marissa stepped back, watching the spot where the youma had only just been and not too sure she trusted it not to poof back into existence, but Michael seemed more at ease and rather confident that that was the end of it, and since it appeared as if monster hunting or youma extermination was something of a regular thing for him, Marissa figured he could at least be trusted in that whether or not she trusted him in anything else.

So she took to staring between them instead, examining Michael’s strange outfit before she went back to examining hers. Again, way too much pink, and the ruffles really weren’t her thing, and she still felt like she belonged in the court of the Sun King, but she supposed there were worse eras she could have landed herself a costume of. In comparison, Michael’s looked more… well, there was a lot of green… and fur. Lucky b*****d was probably pretty warm, and if she wasn’t mistaken there was something vaguely medieval about it.

Her eyes shot back up to his face at his question, and she couldn’t suppress a frown. “You already know what my-…”

And then she stopped, because what she’d been about to say wasn’t entirely true. He knew her as Marissa, not as this… knight or whatever it was she’d suddenly become. There was even a part of her that was fairly certain her name wasn’t Marissa, at least not when it came to this. Of course she was still herself. She wasn’t a new person just because she happened to have acquired a cracked teapot and a new outfit littered with little symbols of… Venus.

She was sure that was Venus, but she couldn’t decide if that knowledge was something she’d already had—astronomy had never been a subject she’d been fond of in school, but she was sure she’d come across the symbols of the planets at some point in her life regardless—or if it was brought to her from the same innate something that told her her new name.

“Palatine,” she said, half startled by the declaration. She met Michael’s—or whoever he was now—eye again and breathed, “What the hell is going on?”
