Wash was momentarily taken aback by her frankness about Jerry. So that was how it had been? It sounded rough, both ways. "Sorry, didn't mean to bring up bad memories. Don't blame yo'self - Jerry can be a hard man to love, sometimes; ain't that true of anyone? Sometimes you gotta worry about what's best by you, yeah?" He gave her a friendly pat on the shoulder. He wondered what the catalyst for their split had been. "He's a little..." He ran his hand through his hair, searching for words. "Mixed up. Right now."

And then - "Studyin', eh? Did ya ever finish? School, that is. What were ya in for?"

She shook her head. "It's not that they're bad just there's a lot of regret. It wasn't that he was hard to love. He was sweet, thoughtful, kind, he practically worshiped the ground I walked on and I loved that! But it wasn't enough for me. I...I hurt him. Badly. Sometimes I wonder if maybe him being the way he is right now is partly my fault." Wash was right, Jerry was very mixed up right now. She had heard what he'd done in the labs, shouting angrily at Sasha. He'd lost it. Jerry needed help. "He's not in a good place right now, and I don't know how to help him. He was getting better, I'm not sure what happened to set him back a hundred steps."

At the question of if she finished school and shook her head. "Almost. I got recruited right before I did. I was going for law. Not that I had like...a passion for it? I had no motivation for it other than just wanting to be a success, to get out of the town I was living in and be something. I wanted money, power, that kind of thing. I still do! Just have to go about it a different way now."

"I dunno. I don't understand him, lately." Sasha - she'd been through so much - and now, this? No. Perhaps he should feel sorrier for Jerry, but he couldn't. Couldn't see past, well. So many things.

"Money an' power, eh?" Wash tilted his head. "An' once you get it, what're you gonna do with it?" All the power and money in the world couldn't fix its problems, couldn't buy happiness. "When will it be enough?"

Candace fell quiet after Wash's question, giving it serious thought. When would it be enough? She'd asked someone else that question before and gotten an interesting answer, one she actually kind of liked. "I don't think it'll ever actually be enough. Not unless I'm at the very top...I don't know what I'll do if I get to that point though. Bask in it? Enjoy it? Use it, of course. It's just how I am. I have ambitions, goals, some more achievable than others. I've actually gotten soft over the past year." She blamed Jerry for that. "I actually kind of hate it..don't you have dreams?" He had had a wife, did he have children? Had those been him dreams? That couldn't be it, who would give up a great dream like that for this?

"...You know, you remind me of my dad." Candace suddenly laughed. "He used to tell me stuff like that. Life ain't just 'bout money, Candy." Candace drawled comfortably, a stupid grin plastered on her face. "You gotta enjoy it too. God'll help you, he'll take ya where ya need t'be." Her grin softened to a small smile. "Mmm...oh!" Suddenly she perked up. It was a forced action. "Let's go down to the beach! It's real nice there, and quiet. I'm findin' I like talking with you." She'd found her entertainment. "I don't have any bourbon left and my primary source of that is busy, I don't want to bother him with my nonsense right now. I'm sure we can find something to do down there, though."

"I had dreams," he smiled wistfully, remembering, then shook his head. "I have duties, now. People t' protect. People who're worth fightin' for." People he'd die for, and they didn't only number among those who he'd left behind, he realized.

"Your father sounds like he was a good man."

"Aight," he nodded peacefully. "Was headed down there, anyway. It's nice; quiet." Burbon? Kind of an odd comment, but he let it pass. It had been a long time since he'd talked to anyone besides Sasha, or well - no. Best not to dwell.

"Nah, my father was an a**. My dad was a good man." Candace winked and gave no further explanation. It wasn't something she felt like clarifying at the moment. "Sometimes I wonder how he's doing, if he handled my, ah, 'death' well. I was his little girl, and we were pretty close. It's those moments I wish we could at least like...don a disguise and watch them from a distance just to make sure they're okay, you know?" She shrugged, knowing full well such a thing could never happen. It was just a silly little thought she entertained when she was feeling...lonely. Not homesick, this was her home, just lonely.

Candace nodded when Wash agreed to head down to the beach, reaching out to link arms with the man again. "Lead the way, good sir~."

His brow wrinkled in confusion at her distinction but- he didn't ask. "I dunno, I think seein' 'em again... It would make things," he paused, carefully searching for the right word. "Harder."

He didn't think he could stand it. If she'd moved on. If she hadn't. No, best not to dwell.

He accepted her arm good naturedly, and let his feet and his own memory lead him along a fairly direct path to the coast. "Besides TV, I think we coul' also use some damn coffee that didn't taste like burnt dirt." And beds whose mattresses weren't distractingly squeaky.

She supposed Wash was right. Would she feel any temptation to linger and stay with her dad if she had a chance to see him? In theory, no. In reality? She wasn't sure. She missed him but...it wasn't like she had plans to move back home after school anyway; Candace would visit but her intentions had been to stay north away from that area. Bah. No more thinking about that. "I had really good coffee for awhile. I ran out recently. It's pretty much the saddest thing ever." See? She was even frowning! This further proved how tragic that day had been.

"I hear Rep has some quality hot chocolate. He'd probably never share it with me, so I'd never get a taste of it unless it mysteriously disappeared." Trying to rob rep of his precious hot cocoa sounded like an entertaining adventure, but it didn't sound like Wash's thing. A shame.

"I was never a big fan 'o hot chocolate."

He had nothing else to say, and so for a while he was content to just keep walking, quietly. The silence was punctured by the crunch of his boots against the dirt. Okay, so maybe it was a little awkward. He hadn't realized until that very moment that he never really bothered carrying on a conversation with most of his fellow hunters beyond a basic cordial greeting.

And then his phone went off.

He fetched it out with his free hand, slipping it from his pocket just enough to read the message that flashed onto the screen.

Sasha
Check your pocket.

But he just... oh. He reached into his coat pocket and felt a slip of paper. He inspected it closely, but it was empty. He almost put it away before - Oh. It had a sweet, heady scent. Something that had decorated his pillows lately, a smell that came with a sweet promise. Her perfume.

Well. He cleared his throat.

"What?!" Candace gasped and jumped away from Wash like he had just physically burned her, a hand pressed to her chest and a look of complete disbelief on her face. "Oh, honey. Bless your heart." She sighed dramatically, relaxing again. "I don't think I can be friends with someone who doesn't like hot chocolate. It's a deal breaker for me." Though the grin said otherwise. She was enjoying Wash's company too much to ditch him over a disagreement about a drink.

When his phone went off she seemed to perk up with curiosity. "Am I keeping you from something?" Candace stepped close again to try and get a glance at the paper. Damn, he put it away too fast. She watched him, a single brow arched high as she tried to find some kind of visual cue about what the paper was. It could be anything. Work, a notice about an engagement of some kind, a love note, something that belonged to someone else. Anything. "...You okay there, Wash?"

"Not sure," he replied honestly, in answer to both her questions.

That woman. Mmm.

Methinks you've lost him~. Atropos chuckled, trying not to laugh as Candace sighed and rolled her eyes. She had to agree.

"I can let you go~. You'll just owe me time later when you're less distracted." Candace informed Wash cheerfully, even tacking on a wink and a little grin as she looked up at him. Maybe next time there'd be more to do.

"Ah, well-" He looked a little embarassed. "'Course, sorry. Was nice seein' ya." Wash ducked his head, nodding to her distractedly. He imagined he could feel the little slip of paper in his pocket. Such a small indiscretion. Discreet.

Tantalizing.

With that, he wandered away, grin just a touch rakish as he let his feet go where they may, humming to himself.
