"I'm sorry to hear that," Lance said quietly. If Gale were a girl, this would be Lance's cue to get up and offer a quiet hug. However, Gale was most certainly not a girl and Lance was not getting up anytime. Or ever. He did not know whether or not Gale would be open to a hug in the first place.
That didn't stop Lance from rolling forward to clasp Gale's arm in support, however.

The arm-clasping thing was slightly awkward, but Gale appreciated the gesture, and he gave a small, swift nod. After a moment, however, he looked up, his eyes flickering back to Lance.
"Look, um..." he said hesitantly, feeling rather stupid about the whole thing, now that he knew it might not be true in the first place. "I know you're, ah...not...well, you're probably not related to me...or, or anything...but..."
He couldn't quite seem to say what he wanted to, floundered pathetically for several moments, and then finally sighed, rubbing his face with a gloved hand.
"Well, it would have been nice, is all I'm saying," he muttered, embarrassed.
