"That's a nice chassis you landed for this project of yours," Matthew teased. "Not just a demon, but a looker. When did you say this kid you've got going is going to arrive?" By which he meant how long do I have to remember the names you told me? Life division tended to joke that if you took Matt's phone and PDA away, he wouldn't remember his own name, much less anything else in his life. Sadly, this tended to mean that on golem missions, he forgot things even faster than usual.
He lounged in the dead grass, stretching out luxuriously and trying out a sexy-pinup-girl pose. "Check it out. 'Nova says I got a succubus. Feeling any intense desires to jump my hot, hot body?"

Nathan was not impressed in the least by Matthew's golem and gave him a disdainful look, of course the other hunter would land a succubus. He pressed a thumb and forefinger to the temples of his own golem and heaved a sigh, always clipped and formal the Death hunter was gunning for a promotion with this project. He couldn't afford to have Matt mess it up for him. "They should be here soon. I can't really comment on the punctuality of these things, they find it difficult to grasp even the more rudimentary concepts without me bashing them over the head with them."
He derisively raked his gaze across the succubus golem, his haughty demeanour perfectly suited for the one that he had landed himself. "Focus more on being a convincing friend and less on being well.." he waved a hand in a vaguely dismissive gesture. "..well you."
"Because if you lose me this project and either the feathered midget or his not-so-little friend get so much of a sniff of what we are up to, I am going to make sure the entire Life network gets those photos mysteriously sent to their inboxes."

"Because unlike some people. I am actually good at my job." He wasn't about to explain that the entire incident had involved someone not logging out of their computer properly and a sprightly young (and very handsome) Death hunter taking advantage of the situation for his personal upward mobility.

"Uh." Matt squinted and tried hard to remember. He wished he had his PDA. He put everything into that. "Tracey ... " he remembered Nate talking about the fallen angel kid he'd talked into a relationship, but the friend was harder. What had it been? Something to do with carnivals? "And, um, Ferris?"
He tried an exaggerated pout. "I'm just a dumb blonde, Na - uh, Nacht. I don't remember any-thiiiiing."

"Close enough." Nathan rolled his eyes, almost disappointed that Matt had actually remembered surprisingly well. "Ferros."
"And you absolutely are, but you are unfortunately my only available accomplice on this mission. The plan is primarily that we introduce them to the concept of bonding perhaps, but don't specify too hard what it entails. That can be saved for when we get them onto the island. The fallen angel is a sucker, he'll believe whatever I tell him, its the other one that I'm wary of. He's big and quiet but he looks like he's got some brains in that tin head of his."
He didn't look entirely convinced he wanted to hear it but asked anyway. "Your opinion?"

Matt got up, brushing dust off the golem's short skirt and regaining his balance in its heeled boots. "You could ditch the friend if you think he's gonna cause problems," he said thoughtfully. "The conversion rate's been steadily improving, and we're not near as hard up as we used to be. One would still get you your brownie points and it'd be better than both of 'em getting skittish."

"More complicated than that I'm afraid. The little fallen angel guy won't do much without his friend with him. He never shuts up about him and was hesitant about even so much as hearing me out without the assurance that the dragon would be involved. If I ditch him, it will probably meddle with the conversion. The way I see it if I get the big guy on side I get two for the price of one. " It was probably greed, but Nate had never been known for moderate ambition.

Matt took a breath to express further opinions about the project. Then Nate said it, and Matt forgot what he was going to say, pride stung. He exhaled sharply and scowled at the other. "I can handle it. You know I can ******** handle it, Nate. Don't be an a*****e."
One more tally mark on the list of ways that Matt is easily manipulated.

Nathan couldn't help but smile with curt condescension, there was a reason he tolerated Matt, sometimes you just needed someone who was reliably controllable. It eased his vanity - with most of the other hunters it was all too easy for him to feel stupid and useless.
"Well then, there should be no problem at all." he flicked the golem's tail smugly. "Don't worry, there will be plenty of reflected glory for you to bask in later, I'm sure that will make up for the insult of my doubts."
The things he did for the organisation, he thought, eyeing the golem's claws. He loathed touching the creatures, it made his skin crawl - but acting skills were part of the job description. "They should be here soon at least." He didn't sound too thrilled.

"Better be," Matt grumbled, still upset but settling down again. "I hate being a chick. ******** heels, jesus."
Then he jumped as a rumbling roar echoed over the twisted trees, followed soon afterward by a series of thuds that vibrated in the dirt under their feet. "The ******** is that??"

Nathan looked just a bit spooked himself, he hadn't factored in earthquakes to his action plan, and for a moment the urge to run like hell and abort mission for the time being was strong. He wasn't paid enough for horrible death, even in a golem. "I'm not sure." he admitted, sounding less worried than he actually was.
He had no idea it meant their "prey" had likely arrived.

Ferros roared again, just for the joy of being able to shake the air with his voice, the ground with his feet. Being folded into a 7-foot form was so limiting. He fired his engines, puffed jets of steam from the pipes that lined his back. "Tracey," he said, and swiveled his head up to look at the fallen angel. "Where did they say they'd be waiting? I don't want to step on anyone accidentally."

Tracey loved it when Ferros shifted into his natural form. There was something primal and raw about the huge earthshaking dragon. He became more immediate, felt and heard by the fallen angel right down to his core as he dipped and soared across the steam thermals, wings effortlessly moving between one another to maximise every movement of the air, making complicated aerodynamic lift mechanics look simple.
Folding the upper and lower sets of wings, he swooped down ahead of Ferros to skim the treetops and loop back, alighting briefly on him, hugging him for balance as he said. "Over there by the trees, two of them." before just as quickly he was off again, skipping through the air like a swallow.

Ferros crouched briefly, then reared up on his tail to peer across the treetops. "I see them," he agreed, then let himself crash back to the ground with an earthshaking thud. He made his way around the treeline, picking his path carefully to avoid knocking too many trees over; he'd gotten grumbled at for a careless afternoon once, and was now more mindful near the forest.
When he reached the place where Nacht and a curvy succubus ghoul waited for them, Ferros lowered himself down to rest on the ground, settling flat and bringing his head down to a better speaking level. "Good afternoon," he said politely.

Only the recollection that his golem-shell shouldn't be too scared of a giant monster let Matt hold his ground as the mechanical monster approached. He noticed after a moment that it was accompanied by a human-sized winged figure - presumably the fallen angel kid. Did that mean that the big one was the friend Nate had talked about? "You didn't tell me it was gonna be that big," he hissed out of the corner of his mouth.
