Ginkgo had some time to rest before high noon. His shift had nearly been over when Dogsbane decided to play his little game. The small, tan buck was not at all amused, however, to find that the gray buck did not meet him on the down, as was agreed. A firm scowl was planted across his face, instead of the regular scowl he usually wore, and he hopped across the down, aiming for the burrows. It took him some time to remember just which one was Dogsbane's, but when he found it, he gave the ground above it a fierce kicking to rouse the rabbit. The tone of the thump expressed anger, not an elil warning, and the thumper was far from happy.

"Get up, Dogsbane!"

Dogsbane startled awake! Earthquake?! Danger? Dirt and bits of rock rained down on his head and he sneezed a few times, bolting out of his burrow and almost halfway around the down before he stopped and stared at Ginkgo.

Then realization hit him like a wave and he put his face in his paws, grooming his whiskers. "'m sorry, Ginkgo!" He did look genuinely sorry. "My burrow...its perfect and I was so tired from last night...I remembered, I-I just... I didn't wake up." He was ready to be mauled.

Ginkgo was angry, which could easily be seen in his stance. Despite being a small rabbit, he seemed rather imposing and he snorted angrily at the younger buck that rattled off escuses before him. He never seemed to shut up and Ginkgo didn't really care what the younger buck had to say. He let his claws do the talking.

He was sitting on his haunches and, angrily, he brought a paw down hard on Dogsbane's face, careful to avoid the buck's eyes, but sure to make him stop babbling and hopefully would be a reprimand that would knock some sense into him.

"I don't care how perfect your burrow is or how tired you are, when an owsla officer gives you an order, you follow it, fleas-for-brains."

Dogs gave a rabbit's scream at the attack and stopped his babbling. He dropped and put his paws over his face, shaking all over. He had a horizontal cut going along his right cheek. It changed paths beside his eye and went almost verticle, like an enlongated L. He had pulled away, hence the weird motion.

He looked up at Ginkgo, truly hurt. Blood beaded on the cut and dripped out onto his fur. "S-sorry, Ginkgo." Was all he could manage.

"Good. Remember that and you will be fine. Forget it and some others might not be as forgiving as I am." Of course that was probably a lie. He was an owsla, a pretty aggressive one, but there were other owsla that were more fair than he. Of course, there were others that were quick to anger, too. Still, even in his annoyance and frustration, he had the warren's well being at heart.

"Clean your wound and follow me. Don't leave me waiting again, or your punishment will be far worse than what I have planned already." Of course, he knew how cruel he was going to be, given how active the younger buck was. A little time out for poor behavior never hurt anyone, right?

Dogs frowned up at him. Wasn't that swipe punishment enough?! He couldn't very well lick his own eye so he began to furiously groom his paw and rub his stinging face. Ginkgo was...so tough. He felt himself looking away as the other waited for him.

"I'm done." He muttered, then bounded around in a circle. "I'll race to where we have to go!" He challenged, eagerly hopping in place.

This was supposed to be punishment, not fun! The bounding buck issued a challenge, one that he didn't feel he could back down from, as he didn't want to seem inferior. If he lost, though, that would be all the worst. Still... "Fine. The beating I gave you last night wasn't enough?" He snorted and moved his line of sight towards the far side of the down, where he would take his afternoon watch.

"See that spot over yonder, by the large, upturned rock? We will meet right there. On my count... Three. Two. One." He darted off, long limbs flexing as he hurriedly dashed towards the spot indicated. He did not like failure and, thus, did not want to fail.

Dogs had been practicing the last few days. If he could outrun hawks and dogs and cats, Ginkgo was not really a match for him. "I want revenge for that!" He announced, taking off. He bolted beside the older male for a time, then passed him by two rabbit lengths and reached the far side, panting a bit.

"What's wrong? The cold hurting your back?" He chided. "Woo! Dogsbane is the winner!" He ran another small circle, bursting with energy.

The other buck beat him, but only by a short distance. Damn, he should have known better. Still, the crotchety rabbit plopped down at his designated spot, ignoring Dogsbane's taunts and jubilation. Instead, he huffed, groomed his tattered ears, stretched, and settled in for what would probably be a long, boring watch... That is, unless an elil showed up. Otherwise, there was little to do other than monitor the down and keep the grazing rabbits safe and sound.

"Settle down, kitten. Now it is time for you to work on your punishment for nearly getting yourself killed. Come, sit next to me." He patted the soft grass with a paw, before turning his gaze outward. Winter would be on them, soon.

Dogsbane settled in happy victory and looks to Ginkgo. "So, what's the punishment, huh? Am I going to scout for elil? Am I going to dig a new network starting from here?" He didn't sound bored by either of those things, twitching all over and looking side to side. This was already way too boring for him.

"Nope. Today, you are going to help me keep the warren safe. And by safe, I mean you will sit right here next to me and keep an eye out for elil. This spot has one of the best advantages and we should be able to see any creature that means to make a meal out of us or our warren-mates." He did his best to seem stern-faced, instead of showing how smug he truly felt at doling out such an easy punishment, one that he knew would drive the young buck mad with frustration over sitting still. No one could call him out on being unfair.

"So, sit your rear down and keep your eyes peeled. Do some good for the warren, instead of getting yourself killed in some haphazard, harebrained scheme, will you? Don't consider running, or your punishment will be far more severe. You will sit next to me until I decide you've had enough."
PostPosted: Tue Nov 06, 2012 6:53 pm

Dogsbane's heart sank. Sit still!? He couldn't fathom it! This was WAYYYY too boring for him and he felt his feet already stamping silently as he waved back and forth.

Five minutes went by in silence and he hopped a small circle on the spot. "Ginkgo, can't I at least WALK around? My feet are getting sore, we've been sitting so long." He pushed his face into the buck's side and sighed deeply.

"Nope. You are going to sit right here. I will tell you when you can move. Sometimes being an adult and taking responsibility means doing things you don't like." He chided, ignoring the younger buck's pleas. It had only been a short time and the shift was far from over. He saw no danger, which was good, because this buck was dividing his attention somewhat.

"Like I said, I will tell you when you can go. Stretch a little bit, but you cannot leave, you hear?" He scolded and, following his own advice, stretched his legs out and rested in the afternoon sun. It was going to be a long day at this rate.

Dogs frowned but stretched none the less and looked for signs of danger. Maybe he could play a game in his head. He counted the bucks on the down. He counted the limbs of the tree nearby. He counted the whiskers on Ginkgo's cheek.

Half an hour passed and all was quiet on the down. Dogs had watched the other young ones run and play for a time and longed to join them. But he even grew bored of watching them. His ears lowered, his head began to nod as his eyes fluttered. He was drifing to sleep, the only time he wasn't moving.
