He wasn't feeling so great. His brain was struggling to deal on one hand with multiple brutal deaths and on the other with preventing more of the same.
He tried to be careful, but him and careful weren't friends.
He got shot.

Melvin wasn't doing too good, and hadn't died nearly as many times as Rep. It was just that he never felt the sensation of dying before that he was left disorientated and a bit (really it was more of a lot) freaked out.
Pulling himself out of the bricks, he moved over to the next tile only to hear the sound of water and a row of teeth come up and swallow him hole. A sharp pain of many daggers crushing his body and he was gone.
The shark sank back into the water.

Status Step: 5 HP: 0 Flags: 0 Instinctive moves: 0 Wow. There was a lot of failure up in this cavern. The whole place reeked of it. It was so rank it made Otto get sloppy in his advance. The trainee found himself slipping through a bad tile, tumbling down through a narrow and endless pit, bones snapping and crunching all the way down until.. He woke up cursing the world in his pod.

The successful guy quickly became not so successful, Rep getting into his golem just in time to see him vanish into oblivion.
He had a bit of a triumphant laugh before setting off on his own once again.
There was a THUNK as a spear shot out of the floor, going straight through an arm. It hurt. It hurt a whole ******** lot. But it was livable, and without even a scream of pain, he gritted his teeth and dragged himself and the spear in his golem's arm onwards.

The laugh was one Melvin finally registered, finally heard from the muffled mask, and he breathed as he pinpointed who Rep was as he entered in his own golem. Looking out to see another being swept off the stage, he noticed that Otto had not been lucky and smiled too. Still, it wasn't a experience he wished on another. His body felt weird as if he still felt like a mushy pancake, and he moved slowly and more stiffly than before. Overly cautious and slow.
The tile he stepped on did not click, break, shoot anything else, or drop anything from above. Melvin was left more tense waiting for something to happen before he noticed nothing was going to. He breathed in relief.

Status Step: 1 HP: 25 Flags: 1 Instinctive moves: 1 There was a lot of grumbling ad bitching from a re-aappeared golem as he made his way back onto the board. Another ninja star to the eye socket had him bitching louder.Otto was not being quiet about this. Nope. Not in the least.

He'd made it past the start. It was amazing, it was glorious.
He had a spear in his arm.
Someone was complaining nearby, he would have been too if it wasn't for the numbing agony strangling out the words. Why did he always get a damn female golem?
He took another determined step and blew the lower half of the golem up. It died.

Melvin watched as Rep was blown apart and looked to the side where Otto was screaming out as a metal star was sticking out his golem's mask. Terrified that he'd be next, he took another step and waited.
Nothing.
He was really freaked out that nothing was happening. Something should be happening. He should be set or fire or stomped on or eaten by guppies. He didn't know, but waiting for it was even more of a strain on his brain.

Status Step: 2 HP: 0 Flags: 1 Instinctive moves: 1 Step two. After only just getting impaled in the eye, the next tile pushed up to trip him into a pit of ravenous, flesh-eating bugs. The cries of terror were pure nightmare fodder. Otto would not be sleeping for the next few years.

Rep had to get out of the pod for a moment, stand up until the world stopped spinning, until his stomach stopped churning. Too many deaths, it was giving him a serious migraine. His body insisted pretty hard at this point that he was dead, his heart racing with sheer adrenaline, breathless and shivering.
But no, he had to keep going. He took long enough to let himself settle before slumping back into the seat.
Another female golem but what else was new?
He got going again.

Melvin watched as Otto screamed bloody murder and saw the bugs eat him slowly. This had Melvin terrified, seeing someone screaming as the bugs swarmed their golem body until they were lost in a squirming pile of small bodies.
Breathing quick, the Lifer stepped back only to jerk and jump to the side as he was hit by shards of sharpened crystal that cut through his fake body. He couldn't do this for long, and was already breathing in short, panic breathes.

It took Otto a long while to stop from shaking. To keep himself from crawling under something and breaking apart. he'd just relived a horrible nightmare he'd once had to endure over and over and over again. The teenager finally forced himself back inside the pod. If he backed out now, how would he look in front of the older boys, right? Right? One more time he told himself. One more time was about all he could stand before he'd have to go have a lie down in a dark room and try not to think about this.

Melvin watched a new golem enter. Rep, he was pretty sure, but keeping track was hard, and watched as they moved before vanishing down, their voice echoing. There was a hard THWACK as their golem body hit the body, showing how far down it had been.
Gasping, he took another shaky step and landed on another tile for nothing to happen. He wanted to be done, and curse himself for taking this course. He wasn't ready.
