He stalked back into the station looking grim. Building brick walls actually really took it out of you when you were just essentially a normal guy. His back hurt and various not-really-healed injuries made their presence known. He headed to the window, the only thing that would make him feel better would be to see the meddling ******** bandage dispenser suitor get torn to bits with maximum malice.
The walls held.
He punched the sill hard.
"Son of a b***h."

Rep didn't take long to explode, but he rarely did, and Melvin took it in stride as he overacted to a fake getting beaten up by a lot of shadowlings. Sympathizing was past him at this point when Rep was just being a sensitive idiot who didn't see the facts staring right in front of him.
When Rep returned, Melvin just watched him as his walls held. "Congrats." He said, his voice flat. He meant it, but he wasn't as excited as he had been during Jenga. Rep had soured that.
Now his turn, he headed to the door. "Doing this means when the real thing does happen, I won't suck. It's called training. I can't be magically good at everything from the start, Rep." He paused as he opened the door. Remember, you're my senior."
He then left to work on his own wall. He didn't give Jordan any attention. It was a golem. A fake. A talking toaster for all he cared in the mold of someone he knew. It wasn't that person. It was mash-potato magic in a shape.

Melvin returned to the tower only to watch Jordan take more damage. He really sucked at this wall building business, but at least he made it this far. Maybe with some luck, he could manage to pass. Still, his princess looked close to falling apart.
Melvin said nothing as he headed back out.

Melvin worked slowly, working up the wooden blocks till he was sure things looked well. He took his time, brow furrowed as he huffed and muttered under his breath. There was no one here but fake Jordan, who was covering it's mouth at some of the colorful words it managed to make out, before the walls were done.
Melvin turned to Jordan. "Stay here and don't die. Punch something if you can." Then he walked off.

Melvin returned and stood, watching as the last wave came. The walls held well and only one shadowling slipped by. Jordan was against the wall, but still standing even if it was by leaning against the wall. The point was, Jordan princess was alive.
"I'm doing this training to get better. I'm not dicking around here, so if you are getting hurt by thinking I don't care, then you've got things wrong. If I didn't care, I wouldn't be here trying to get better. I wouldn't be making an effort." He said, watching as the shadowlings went away. Jordan princess was still standing. It counted. They were done.

Rep gave Melvin an entirely critical glare. He didn't buy that the other man wasn't messing around, didn't buy that it wasn't some sort of joke at his expense, and hated himself for the wave of relief he'd felt at watching a fake version of Jordan survive relatively intact after that influx.
"I'm not ******** hurt." he snarled like a wounded animal. "It was just a ******** thought is all."
He looked him up and down. "Though I don't know, you don't seem to care about anything, even with the excuse that you train to get better." He didn't know how to deal with someone who didn't wear their emotions on their sleeve, the other man was an enigma and he hated how he could see right through or ignore every bit of bravado and masculine posturing he could throw at him.

Not hurt his a**. Melvin knew Rep was touchy. Everything seemed to be a button for Rep or could be twisted to be one. It was as if they man loved having his blood at boiling all the time. It got to the point Melvin just wanted to tell him to calm the hell down and breath. Being that angry had to do terrible things for the nerves, and with a guy with as big a weapon as Rep had (or had Melvin guessed), he didn't want this guy being twitchy.
"Just because I don't seem to care on the outside, doesn't mean I don't. You shouldn't judge on face value, and you've only just met me. I've only just met you. A bit too early to make assumptions, right?" He watched their princesses in their own little boxes.
"I care about a lot of things. I'm not evil, Rep. I didn't drown kitten or set cars on fire before I got here. I want people to live just as much as I want to live. I gave up everything for answers same as everyone else. Why would I then not do anything when I got here? You have taught me what is important here. I didn't ignore you. I didn't ignore everyone else who has been teaching me, Jordan included. I don't want to see any of you die. I'm new and I'm going to need all the help I can get after all." He needed their protection, information, and making these connections last. It was the only way he was going to get a higher chance of making it out alive.
"So....we cool?"

Rep didn't seem to relax at all, just kept up his tense and as always, furious posture, still eyeing him as if trying to decide if he was being mocked or not. It was really hard to tell with the people from Life. They were smart and sneaky and could very easily use sarcasm against him - he was fine at dishing sarcasm out, not always so adept at registering it. It didn't help with Melvin, when both of them weren't drugged out of their brains, he always felt like he was being very much looked down at, and not much he could do could fix that.
"Well." he hazarded. "I'm used to people being like. Outside caring. Mostly."
He looked away peevishly, anger always a good veil to draw over whatever other emotions might be boiling under the surface. He was about to say that yes, fine, they were tenatively okay when a thought raised alarm bells in his mind. "Jordan taught you things?"
The anger was suddenly a lot more directed and vivid.

And there it was again. Didn't he get tired of this?
"Yes, like if he saw monsters in the submarine pod. We were stuck on duty. I asked him about who the leaders of the groups were, weapons, how the divisions were set up, and other basics like that. What did you THINK I asked him about?" He said to Rep, having a feeling he was inventing ideas in his head to make Melvin look worse.

Again that critical look. He wasn't sure wether to take Melvin as a threat or not.
He was entirely right that Rep's immediate plan of action was inventing ideas. On one hand Melvin was good looking. His hair was fantastic, a fact that was established already. But on the other, he was about as flexible as a steel bar and didn't look like he'd ever be interested in seducing anyone ever. He wasn't even sure if the guy wasn't a cyborg yet.
"I don't know." he conceded. "Can never tell with you. You ask a lot of weird s**t."

Melvin just raised a manicure eyebrow. "How the hell is that weird s**t? It was just asking about how this place worked. Anyone would ask that. What did YOU ask people when you first came here?"
He had to wonder what Rep considered normal. Compared to everyone else, Melvin felt like one of the few normal people around. Everyone else was off their damn rocker, Rep included. He had no patience, invented ideas, got switched to furious on a dime, and had too many issues to count. Of all the jocks Melvin had to deal with in his life, Rep was one of the biggest girls he met. Maybe he should have been the princess instead of Jordan.

"I didn't ask people s**t when I got here. Like I was going to owe them anything at all. No, what I learned I learned by ******** doing, by reading s**t, by figuring it out. I'm never going to owe anyone ******** anything. Favours are a weakness. As long as that was all you were asking." he pointed at Melvin critically. "Cause you look like a ******** queer, so just a warning. Don't get any ******** ideas about asking anything not-business, right?"
His paranoia was so much worse than usual without Tracey to keep it in check. "Cause I've already had trouble with that s**t already, don't be the next Ro, it'd be a shame to break your face."

To break YOUR face
Oh, the word selection was a bit questionable, and he thought about something a moment before passing it off.
Melvin smiled. "I already saw Ro when I was working in the Infirmary. I didn't need you pointing out that Jordan and...Ace was it? That they are off limits. I also like my face to be in one piece." He brushed off the queer comment. How many times did someone say he looked like a f** in his lifetime. It was the default, macho-guy insult. Probably due because they couldn't' be bothered looking up new and better insults. "I usually don't ask favors. I do ask questions because I'm not going to just twiddle my thumbs waiting for the answers to just fall in my lap. It's a waste and here, not knowing could have me killed." He wanted to be as informed as possible.
"And I'm doing all I can." He gestured to the training ground.
It was best not to keep Rep on this high alert, suspecting he was trying to hit on his men. As if Melvin would want to touch anyone who had two partners. He could only wonder if they changed their sheets each night.
"Well, we finished another course. Not bad. You finished before me. but I expected you too." Compliments to tone down that temper a bit, he hoped. "I only have a few more to go at this rate." He was trying to get everything cleared to get full clearance and prove to others that he hadn't been slacking.

"Good, as long as we are clear that what's mine is mine then we are good. You'd be ******** amazed how hard that is to get through on some people. Ro needed well, a bit of like, encouragement to take the hint. Good to see you are smarter than that, you'll go far with that kind of self preservation in this ******** dangerous shithole. As long as you don't make a ******** habit of getting fake versions of my guys murdered." His words were almost friendly but his body language was not, still replaying over and over trivial things in his head. This relationship thing was a real weakness sometimes, he thought. A very obvious one as well. He wasn't sure how happy he was about being so easily affected by, like Melvin said, something that wasn't real.
"Whatever works for you though as far as finding s**t out. Most of what I can learn I have to learn by getting bastards to fight me and mean it. Not half arsed training easy mode s**t. I want them to want to win, to want to murder me, because on the battleground no one's going to be ******** training." He shrugged. "And aye, there's a lot of s**t I've not done yet either, but a lot of s**t I can't do right now either." No matter what he tried to focus on there was always the numb heavy weight of the tablet against his back.

Melvin had never wanted to murder anyone here. Sure, he hated a few people, but never had he wanted to beat them to near death. He didn't care about anyone he hated enough to devote so much attention and fixated anger to them. It seemed like such a stupid waste of your time, and he always was realistic of his own physical limitations. Sure, he could get angry, but starting a fight seem ridiculous when most guys could beat him into the ground. It was like asking to get your a** handed to you.
"Oh, I don't plan on playing this game again." He said, pointing out the observation window. "I find it a bit creepy meeting princesses. My sister never liked them and neither did I." They were too...good to be real. The sickening, sugar-sweet personalities were seen as a joke between his siblings. They liked more grisly movies.
Pulling out some papers from his back pocket, he inspected the courses available for training. "Well, I was going to check out Deathsweeper - geez, these names." Someone really had fun making these courses sound grand. Jenga. Princess Island. Deathsweeper. It sounded like a janitor course for sweeping up bodies. "Says it's a golem course so it's safe enough for us. Gives something to do." He looked to Rep. "I'll be heading there same time tomorrow."
