The mention of Jericho made Riley hesitate, as though something about the sound of his name disturbed her. She put Ombra down, which immediately upset the pup and made him slam his tiny head into her foot over and over in dismay. She moved to sit down at the edge of Malodore's bed, and carefully dissected her feelings on the matter.

Confused. She murmured finally. I suppose that's how I feel, too. She didn't actually know if that was the word she would use to express the sinking feeling in her heart that made no sense to her, but it seemed adequate.

I don't know where to go from here. There's always been a set path before me, from the moment I spawned. Now, everything seems to be a jumbled mix. Yes, confused was starting to make more and more sense to her, now.

"Yes - yes, exactly," it said, feeling a strange surge of relief. "I... mia cara, after you... after the Insanity took you the first time," and it settled next to her on the bed, fanning a wing around her even as it twined its claws through her fingers, "I threw myself into my work, into defeating it. And now... and now it has been defeated, through no work of my own. I did not... save... anyone." It sounded puzzled, and a little hurt, and more than a little ashamed of feeling that way.

"What is important is that it is no more, I know this, and yet..." It shook its head. "It is as if the path I was following, si, has been pulled out from beneath me. There is always Science, of course, but... so much of myself, my passion and pain, I poured into that path. Without it I feel vaguely... hollow."

Riley understood all too perfectly. But, there was a sudden relief to know she wasn't the only one with gaps of unknown territory ahead of her.

She picked up the claws that mingled with her fingers, and turned them to face her, looking down at them. Her other hand reached in, fingers lightly tracing the paths down the hand that each claw took. Hollow. She murmured quietly. That is a good word for it. The purpose I thought I had, gone. Now, I'm hollow. And you share this perception, it seems. Without meaning to, Malodore and Riley seemed to have found themselves standing on even ground once more.

And she knew it held no more answers for her than it did for itself.

Logic dictates that we should strive to find new purpose in these moments of loss, else we become nothing. Her hand squeezed Malodore's claws tightly. But I've never.. Her eyes lifted up to look at it. I've never had a choice. I don't know how to start.

It softened, brushing the tip of its beak against her cheek. "Ah, here at least, I have some small experience, having previously deviated from the path laid out for me... though much of it was facilitated by others." Its gaze shifted to look at the crow Fedele, who was slumbering on his perch by the window. "Still, I have grown since coming here. I ought to be capable of making choices for myself, si?"

The plague doctor sighed and curled its neck such that its head was resting on Riley's shoulder, an awkward but fond pose. "What would you like to do, in your life?" It sounded like a rather big place to start, but it couldn't think of anything else. "For me, I want to... to heal, to repair what is broken and fight that which breaks. I thought I had found my great nemesis, but... well. There are other worthy opponents available, are there not?"

Riley listened, very carefully, in hopes of gleaming some wisdom from the one she trusted most, who had experience in the matter. But when it spoke of finding its greatest nemesis, her eyes flickered for a moment, and then focused very firmly on it.

Malodore wanted nothing more than to repair what is broken. To fight that which breaks. These were the words from its own mouth. And somewhere deep down inside, it made her wonder if that was her answer.

So you need a new nemesis. One to break, so that you may fix.

Her mind was working too fast for emotions to follow. Is that right?

"In a sense," it said, slowly. "Though it is... a bit more complex than that. I do not need one - truly, I would rather have gone all my days without encountering Insanity," and its wing twitched, drawing her closer still. "I would not wish such a thing into the world for my own glory. But those creatures that exist now... si, I would slay them, in my own way."

Just as quickly as her mind had begun to pile pieces of plot together to form an idea, they tumbled down like jenga pieces at Malodore's dismissal. She couldn't even do this right. Well, I just thought.. if you had something to fight..

She sighed, and leaned into the offered wing. I need something to fight. She was so simple, at her core. If she wasn't reaching, struggling, and arriving victorious at the top of some insurmountable goal, she was nothing.

And now, she didn't even have to fight her own Insanity. Not that she wanted that back, even now.

She looked up at the room, and blinked. They'd come here for a purpose, other than soul searching..

Shower? She murmured quietly.

"Si," it said, at once, moving to retrieve its shower bag from the closet, along with a fluffy bathrobe. For Riley, of course. Still, even as it headed to open the door for her, it tilted its head to one side. "Something to fight... well, there is no shortage of Hunters," it said, wryly. "And the Bogeymen were rather cruel... but si, I understand. We are similar, yes, but also different..."

It opened the door and gestured for her to go out ahead of it. "Freedom can be so... frightening," it added. Its voice was quiet and oddly vulnerable.

The hunters, and the bogeys. Riley's expression looked tired. There wasn't a single flame of fire for them, anymore, and that just made things worse.

She took its offer and walked out the door, letting Malodores final words settle upon her. Was she frightened about her freedom? She certainly wasn't looking forward to it. But fear.. she refused to believe that was how she felt.

If its truly so frightening, then perhaps the fight to overcome fear of freedom is my new enemy. Now that was a fight she was ready to get behind. I'm not ready to embrace it, but I certainly refuse to let it cripple me.

She waited for Malodore to join her, and slid her hand loosely around its waist.

The plague doctor allowed itself to be tugged forward, a fresh spark of tenderness kindling within it. "We both need worthy opponents, don't we? But I would not be overly concerned, not truly. Peace is too rare a thing for us to have only that in our lives. Even this far..." It laughed and shook its head. "We have both been through so many trials. Surely we have not used up our lives' allotment just yet."

Fair enough. She murmured. No one could ever argue that we are not owed a bit of peace. Even if her soul craved war, she was tired. A fresh start and a moment to breathe might be just what she needed to start anew. It was difficult, almost painful to not worry about the path ahead, and have each step planned as she took them. But she was used to pain, by now.

The bathrooms were up ahead, easy to find, even for her. She opened the door, and looked inside. Empty. She sighed gratefully. Having occupants wouldn't have stopped her, but there was an admitted relief to knowing they would be alone.

"They're often empty," Malodore said, wryly. Not all undead cared about cleanliness, and it supposed the vampires wouldn't deign to use the 'public' facilities. "Not quite as opulent as the demon dormitories, but then, what is?"

It was the work of a moment to cordon off two shower heads behind curtains, and the plague doctor wasted no time in shucking off its coat - a testament to how comfortable it had become around Riley. "Ahhh," it sighed happily as it turned its shower on and stepped under the warm spray. "Si, this is a good bit of peace, here. This shower. And you, mia cara."
