All... day?
"Many many things..." she said, frowning, "I mostly take care of food preparation" Which wasn't too hard once you learned how not to cut off your fingers, "and I take care of my sister's weapons..." at Kishku's request, of course. The Elder had insisted that Dyakida take care of their weapons, even when they protested. Their argument was that a warrior should be able to take care of their own weapons.
Dyakida agreed, but Kishku had insisted on the grounds that Dyakida needed the practice. Dya... also agreed with that.
"I also help with figuring out who goes patrolling with who..." harder than you might think, and harder to remain unbiased when she would rather Briella not leave the tree- or her.
But Briella needed to have the experience patrolling. Dyakida knew that.
"And help take inventory sometimes" She smiled a bit wanly, "not very interesting, I know."

" Not interesting at all," Tahira agreed, other than maybe the caring for the weapons bit. " Someone has to do it though and it's still important." While Tahira herself wasn't interested in doing any of those jobs the young prentice knew that things would fall apart if someone wasn't doing them. Warriors her people might be but there was a place for everyone to contribute something.

" Do you ever nibble on the food while you're making it?" she asked curiously. Tahira had seen her Ma pop a spare piece of fruit or meat into her mouth while preparing meals before. Meat she could understand tasting to make sure it was flavoured right but melons or slices of bread, that was just cheating and eating before everyone else could. Tahira assumed it was a privilege granted to those who ruled the cooking areas.

Dyakida smiled sadly. She knew her life was uninteresting and frustrating, but necessary.
"Hmmm?" The food? An interesting thing for her young sister to focus on, from all the minutia of Dyakida's duties and life.
"It is... difficult not to nibble as you cook. The food is there and you have to make sure it's flavored correctly... or cooked correctly... or make sure that the flavors go together well."
She leaned closer, "Thats what I tell my sisters, or would tell them if they called me out on it. The truth is, cooking is hungry work, and how can you wait when the food is right there?" her smile grew a little. A nice little joke.
"Do you like to cook?" she asked. Cooking was an interesting hobby. Not for her, though. For her it was a job given to her out of necessity, both to give her something to do and because she was trapped homeward for much of the day.
"Since you like to swim, perhaps you like to eat fish?"

" I like eating fish but I can't cook it," Tahira admitted. " I'm good and patient about catching them but," she shrugged " they're harder to cook than to catch and it's a waste of food to let me practice too much." Someday she'd learn but for now the young prentice was more than happy to do her part just by bringing the food in. "I can make stews and stuff though with beast meat." Well she could with a little help anyways, the kitchen was not really Tahira's domain.

" Most of the time I just like being outside doing stuff you know. I feel happiest when I'm exhausted from running and climbing and swimming all day." Though her free time was being curbed now by her responsibilities as a Prentice.

"Fish is more difficult. It cooks faster." Dyakida said, nodding, She had previously been that person always on the go, always on the move.
Now that attitude caused injuries and pain. And she would rather talk about food.
"The secret to cooking is to always keep an eye on it." she said, stretching, "And to toss herbs in when possible"
She smiled, "Have you ever had biscuits? My sister's love them."
PostPosted: Sun Jan 20, 2013 1:49 pm

"Oh I like those, they're best if you can dip them in gravy though and they don't travel very well." The hot wet atmosphere of the jungle meant that biscuits and similar foods often ended up soggy if you tried to use them as provisions for any sort of extended trip. They were also prone to growing mold quickly from the moisture.

Tahira stretched and wiggled her toes in the mud again. "I've had a lot of different foods because my Ma is from the wind tribe so I've gotten to try a lot of the things her people taught her to make." Sometimes it was little more than just a different way of cooking the foods here but others there would be different spices or dried meat sent from far away in sauti and that was always interesting as well.

"Yes, they are best in home cooking..."
She usually traveled with dried fruit or fresh fruit or just grazed when necessary. But a good biscuit at dinner... Mmm.
Meat wasn't good for travelling either- it was good for quick cooking and maybe smoking, but it was too wet and warm for good, long lasting meat.
Fine for stews, though.

"The wind tribe?"
Had Maya mentioned them? She was a bit surprised, but she had learned at some point that halfbreeds often didn't sound different from any other sister.
"What sort of things does she give you to eat, then?" Honestly, Dyakida did not know what to expect, but she was curious.

Finding ways to cook new foods were a useful hobby and wind tribe... was obviously not alkidike?
Wow. What an obvious thought.

"Lots of weirdly dried and smoked meats and fruits, something called curry, um a lot of stuff with spices from Sauti." Tahira wasn't great at exactly explaining what the foods were but she was enthusiastic in her attempts. " Sometimes she just takes food from here though and cooks it in ways they do over there, you can do a lot with birds. The young prentice had no idea how a single animal could be made to taste so many different ways just by changing the cooking method.

" Someday I will go to Sauti and meet my Ma's family." she declared, determination ringing in her voice. They were her kin too and though they were not warrior types there was likely stuff they could teach her to help her grow stronger.

"Those sound delicious" Dyakida wiggled her feet in the water, "Perhaps I could come over some time and learn a few new techniques from her..." that would be interesting.
Facinating, actually.
"You know." she began, "My sister, Maya, went to Sauti. I belive she went somewhere cold... Zena? as well." she smiled. All she had were stories and the feel of a strange rocky scale. Stories paled to reality, unfortunately, and Dyakida found herself wondering just what Sauti and Zena felt like.
Maya had described them with (somewhat lacking) imagery... but Dyakida, though thankful for the visual, needed feel. How the winds of Sauti felt on a face. How Snow... Snow, how strange that water should exist as a solid... felt when it brushed past the hand...
That was what made something real to her. Vision had been relagated to blurred watercolor memories, images that no longer were attached to what she felt around her.
"That sounds like an adventure." she commented, "Any idea when you would make the journey?"

"Not until I am older," Tahira gave a small sigh. She was too young yet and too untrained to make such an trip by herself. One day though she would see what surprises sauti and the lands beyond it held in store for her. " And you are welcome to come for dinner any time, it is nice to have company during meals." Her ma would probably enjoy having someone to show her recipes off to who could appreciate the effort that went into cooking. " You could bring Maya as well and she could tell me about her time in Sauti." That would make for an entertaining evening.

"Maya has been busy as of late," commented Dyakida thoughtfully, "but I think she might like a new audience for her tales. I'll talk to her." she smiled, "I think dinner with you and your mother would be excellent." thinking about it actually made her mouth water, "My sister Briella would be interested too, I think." She tested the water with a foot. She... kind of wanted to have another race.
"And she is welcome to our tree as..." wait. She had said her mother was not an alkidike? She was a halfbreed of the wind tribe. It was hard to remember things like that when she wounded like any other alkidike sister. She supposed that most of the differences between them would be visual. "... or perhaps not. Your home would be better." Niebet and Kishku wouldn't take well to an Earthling around.
"Would you want to travel alone?" she wondered out loud.
Yes. Another race would be fun.

Tahira caught the small amount of hesitation in Dyakida's voice and frowned. Wasn't her existence proof enough that her parent's bond should be recognized and accepted, after all they would not have been given the blossom that contained her if Aisha had not approved.

Dismissing the annoyed thought Tahira quickly replied to the next question "I'm not sure yet, I might go with others if they can keep up with me." The young girl was not fond of working with others when she felt they were holding her back.

" Would you like to race back to the other side before we part ways for the day?" She offered, noting the older female's fidgetyness.

Dyakida didn't care. Halfbreed or no, she couldn't see it, they didn't act differently, what was the point?
Earthlings were easily another story, but that wasn't why Dyakida was so reluctant to show her mother to her home tree.
Neither would really be welcomed, she thought, and this would possibly involve sharp objects and arrows- maybe even the ones she had made for her sisters.
That would be unfortunate and not very nicely ironic: Her new acquaintance and her mother, killed by weapons of her own creation."If they can keep up?" That was a very alkidike thing to say and Dyakida smiled. See? Halfbreeds might as well be Alkidike. They were born of Aisha, were they not? Dyakida had a rather pragmatic and holistic view of her mother-tree (Which she kept firmly to herself), but she found it darkly amusing that even those who treated Mother Aisha with almost fanatical reverence would question her decision to grow a lotus and bring a half-blooded child into the world. It was hypocritical. And silly.
"Sometimes the ones who can't keep up are the ones that you should help. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and sometimes you may find that the strengths of those you leave behind are what you most need..." she laughed, undermining the seriousness of her statement. "But enough of that. Another race? I would love to."
She very much would.

Tahira nodded slowly as Dyakida spoke, her own Ma had needed rescuing by her mother when they first met. Her ma had overestimated her own skills and it had nearly gotten her killed. Tahira loved the woman dearly and was grateful that the incident had brought her parents together. Still, she didn't think she'd have the patience to work with someone who bodily limits were reached before her own.She didn't have a lot of patience to begin with.

Carefully the girl got back to her feet and stretched before wading about a foot out into the water. "I'll take the side with the current this time, so it's fair." Her antennae twitched with anticipation, this should be fun, regardless of the result.

"All right" her choice.
"Ready?" she said, touching Tahira briefly again to get her bearings and face the right direction, "I'll count off again. On three."
She tensed, feeling her muscles ready themselves.
"One..." This had been a fun discussion. "Two" She looked forward to meeting Tahira again, perhaps trying some of the foreign foods from Sauti. It would be interesting, definitely.
"Three!" She dove forward, swimming hard. She could feel her muscles working hard to make up for lost time. She would feel it later, and it would be miserable, but for now? For now she was racing and it was beautiful.
The way her body cut through the water, the cool splashes of the water, the hot air above her and taken in with every breath. And finally, the soft silt and sand of the river's edge. She pulled herself onto the shore with a laugh, feeling the soreness already beginning. It was a good pain. She was still alive, and she was still Alkidike.
"And this time, sister? Did you win?" she smiled, a broader smile than usual.
