"That's not why I said it! I wasn't trying to flirt or anything, honest," Steven's voice cracked in a way that made him seriously reconsider hanging around, especially after he had enough time to think over what he said and realized there was likely something he didn't get, or took the wrong way, or something was going over his head.
He wanted to turn around and run, but his sneakers suddenly felt glued to the pavement, so he took to tugging on his shirt collar and stammering like an idiot for a moment.
"I mean, thank you, and all, I'm not trying to be rude, I was just kind of caught off guard?" He ended it like a question and figured out this was decidedly not a smooth recovery. "I mean, you're very pretty and all," And then he sounded like something was caught in his throat again and he had a small spastic moment when he caught himself. "Not that I'm trying to... you know! I mean... um..."
Steven didn't leave the lab much.

Anella watched Steven, lips curled in an amused smile. Her expression made her amusement fairly obvious, and there was no denying that being attacked by a vicious squirrel was the furthest thing from her mind by now. Steven very much made up for the earlier encounter; he had saved the day in more ways than one.
"Not rude, not at all," she replied, smile broadening. "And thank you, for the compliment. That is terribly sweet of you. I'm not going to bite you, you know. In fact, I might even give you a little kiss on the cheek if I was sure you'd appreciate it." The truth was, she wasn't sure if his head would pop off if she got any closer, and as much as she loved teasing people, she didn't know how close she was to actually causing him some sort of distress. "So, I think I've bothered you enough for one afternoon, right, Steven? But it really has been a pleasure to meet you. I hope I bump into you again the next time a squirrel harasses me. I don't know what I'll do without you!"

Steven had decided to avoid stuttering like a moron he should just seal his mouth shut, though his eyes noticeably widened when she threatened to kiss him.
There was an awkward, silent pause before he broke his rule of shutting up and ended up regretting it almost immediately. "Thank you!" Thank you for what? He had no idea. Maybe the compliment? It seemed like the right thing to say have a millisecond ago.
"I m-mean... um... I... good bye," He sounded almost deflated at how stupid he must e coming across. And then he parted ways in the other direction. He would never get she was teasing him, ever, but he was still incredibly embarrassed at the crippling lack of social skills he apparently demonstrated.

A part of Anella felt very bad for annoying Steven, but he was just so damned adorable—how could she not have? She let out a light laugh, awkwardly scratching behind her neck as he walked away. She'd enjoyed their conversation—and the fact that he had chased away a nasty old squirrel for her. She'd been half tempted to call out 'Goodbye' and wave him off obnoxiously, but she'd pestered him enough for one day.
She probably hadn't been a very grateful damsel in distress, but she'd just have to work on that so she could thank him properly next time.
With a pleasant sigh, she turned in her own direction, intent to finish her ice cream—and enjoy it.
