Thank you! I love the place where I live <3 I don't think I have a huge variety of birds unlike some here! wink . However! A female evening grosbeak stopped by on Friday! That was really exciting. Like, really.

My jays disappeared for about a week and that made me sad. Usually they're in the trees at 8am waiting. I usually have over a dozen but the last two weeks it was 8:40am when they showed and it was only about four. I hadn't changed the food or anything so I was really crushed. They showed up a few days ago because it was cold so they wanted some nummy food. Oh, before they left, they made really weird gurgling and whistling sounds instead of the usual squawking:

The grosbeak was lovely. heart I think one of my mystery birds might be related to your grosbeak. (in the finch family.) It has the same beak, and body shape except it's legs are a bit sturdier and he is brown/tan with spots and speckles.

That's a horrible description. sweatdrop I hope this picture helps a bit.

This is NOT the mystery bird. This is a Puerto Rican Nightjar. (Caprimulgus noctitherus )

But the colors, spots and speckles are quite similar to the mystery bird's. I have yet to see one of these (nightjar) in person. I explore a bit every time I go to the beach and I venture into the dry forest, but I usually don't stray far. I don't think it wise to get lost midst cactii, Gumbo-limbo trees, and wasps.
I did however manage to see (and hold) for the first time in my life a juvenile Puerto Rican Crested Toad. (Peltophryne lemur) I know It seems silly to make a big deal over it but you see, they are native and critically endangered. It was very small. About the size of the distal segment of my pinky but I was amazed. My mother, sister and I had to be careful when walking so as to not step on them.

While on one of my adventures I made friends with a Spotted Sea Hare (Aplysia dactylomela ) that was munching on petticoat algae. I nicknamed him Bubbles. emotion_kirakira

Looks like I got into other members of the animal kingdom. redface Sorry about that. I'm extremely long winded.

Do you have any idea about who my mystery bird could be?

Have you tried using this website to identify? http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/browse.aspx (If you have cats, it's fun to play a bunch of bird calls and see how they react.)

Toads are super cute. In my other house, we had baby toadies. I loved them. (bucket of toads, teeny toadie, not so teeny toad.)

Today I had SEVEN grosbeaks arrive on the deck. I mix in sunflower seeds with the nuts because the jays leave them so the other birds have something to eat. The grosbeaks were sitting there munching. I opened the door to throw out more seed and they flew to a nearby tree, so I hope they came back down after I left for work.

On Saturday, I was in my woman cave, playing games and a flicker came down and sat by the tree but left without eating anything.

Maybe next year, if we get the overhang for the outside door, I will get more and better feeders. (Suet, upside down feeders for the nuthatches and a sheltered nyjer feeder in case I get some finches.)

Does anyone know of good bird watching/tracking programs? I had two grosbeaks on Saturday, and I'd really like to track who/when I see. Grosbeaks apparently only show up every four years to feeders.

Edit: Signed up for http://ebird.org/ which seems to be okay. If anyone has any others, I'm all ears!

Hello Pirhan

My apologies for the extremely late reply. School and life have gotten hectic and I was on a bit of a hiatus. I tried looking the mystery bird up but I didn't find him. I think It's because the web site focuses on North American birds and I don't live in North America. *sigh*

I don't have cats, but our dogs sure reacted to the Flicker.

Your woman cave made me laugh. You'd get lost spelunking in my sister's woman cave. rofl

On Saturday, I had 40+ grosbeaks show up on the deck. I guess word got out that my place is large enough for groups. I also got up at 7:36am Saturday to feed those feathered monsters. Man they are loud.

Today I fed them again, but I was zonkered and didn't get up until about 8:40ish. Fed them again at noon. The grosbeaks were hanging out on a tree to the right of the deck and when I came out they moved more to the front and before I had finished with the nuts (for the jays) they were coming down to look for sunflower seeds. I went in and got their seeds and put it out on the deck and they all came down while I was standing there. I slowly/quickly went in, grabbed my camera, came back out and there were just a few feet away from me eating. It was pretty amazing. The popping of their beaks breaking the sunflower shells open was pretty mesmerizing. I love that the jays don't like the sunflower seeds and the grosbeaks don't like the nuts.

I'll upload my not so great, but better than through the milky glass photos tomorrow. :3

From Sunday. The nice thing about the grosbeaks is that they put the jay's in their place. The grosbeaks will chase the jays away and the smaller birds, like the chickadees aren't as afraid of the grosbeaks so they can get some goodies too.

I had fifty+ grosbeaks this morning. A bunch were waiting for me to go out and give them food. At least they're quieter than the jays. dramallama

Edit: Here's a video of them coming back for a third round of food this morning: http://youtu.be/KOuJqXXDs2Q

PARROTS

Wow! I can't believe I missed those parrot pictures of yours! THOSE ARE NEAT. What type of food is that you're feeding them? What stunning birds.

I also got some nice photos, here are my favourites:

I bought one more, and probably the last for the season, bag of food. I had a nice chat with the woman at the pet feed place and got her interested in feeding the birdies.

Just the wild bird seed that I buy at the supermarket, though the parrot in particular likes sunflower seeds.

My backyard has a huge animal civilization, and I must have at least 30 stellar jays who hang out in my backyard on the bamboo type plants behind my shed. I don't have any pictures but if I can seem to remember i'll take a few.
