Remarque tilted his head at Steven's question, perhaps not fully understanding what he was asking about it. The silence wasn't uncomfortable for him, if only because he found that he really didn't mind it. It was particularly useful when gathering energy, and he'd long since grown accustomed to quiet evenings of perusing the park or dark alleyways.

"Why?" he asked, somewhat rhetorically. "Why what?"

He wasn't entirely certain just what the guy was asking, and rather than give out too much information on a subject he hadn't been remotely interested in, he figured he'd rather have a better idea of just what Steven was asking before he opened his mouth about anything.

All of Steven's questions seemed to clog up like his brain was a drain pipe. "...I don't know, I guess," He mumbled quietly. He had started out tonight with an excess of joy and optimism and now the world had gotten so dark and tangled again and it seemed like he couldn't begin to sort it out without enough information to phrase his questions right to get that information.

"Maybe I should just go and you can go back to doing... whatever you were doing..." He said, sounding utterly defeated.

Remarque tilted his head at Stephen, rather surprised by the whole mood change. Admittedly, he had been enjoying the conversation—to a degree. He was always fishing for information, and while Stephen wasn't exactly a reliable source, chatting up anyone from the Surrounding felt like he was one step closer to truly understanding the whole thing.

"Maybe," he said with a little shrug. "Are you that caught up on the whole thing? It happened quite a while ago. Or have you been living in denial of the whole thing for so long that you don't know what to make when presented with the truth?"

"Mmmnnnot really," Steven admitted, cringing off in another direction. "I mean, I have no idea how we got there, or how we got back, or how we got un-dead. I know we died, though. At least I'm pretty sure I did. I saw my friends die, but they're alive now and that... just... Well no one's really explained that. Plus... the whole senshi thing is just really, really confusing."

He cleared his throat and forced an awkward smile. "Problem with just being human, I guess."

Remarque supplied a saccharine smile. "Of course. I suppose it must be difficult being 'just human' when you've got all this stuff going on around you. I'm sorry to hear about that—about all your dead friends. Fortunately they're at least undead? Though I suppose living with that is a constant reminder of why you ought to be careful of anyone dressed up."

Steven didn't seem like a bad fellow, but—hell, even now he was half tempted to drain him. Nothing personal; he had a sort of soft spot for the civilians on the Surrounding and had refrained (not to mention the fact that he wasn't sure Steven would have had anything interesting in his pockets) though there was very little Remarque could do that would warrant guilt afterwards.

Steven's awkward smile remained, not managing to decipher what was wrong with Remarque's expression. He took it at face value. "I guess... I mean, at least I'm talking to someone outside of them who will even admit it happened!" Not that he had tried after so many people told him he was a nut case. He wasn't afraid to bring it up, at least in the hopes someone go 'oh yeah', but if he was told to shut it on that topic he actually listened. He didn't want to be put in the nuthouse now, he was only a year away from graduating!

"I don't know, there's no point in being afraid, especially if most don't even realize they're wrong," He would be forever adamant about not generalizing, even about a group of aliens who got his friends tortured and himself and killed. Because it was probably an accident, right?

Remarque couldn't help but quirk a brow in response to the male next to him. "You're an odd one, you know. There's no point in being afraid?"

Fear was an emotion Remarque liked to think he had under control—an emotion he figured he'd mastered and completely cut out of his life. Normal people weren't supposed to do that, he'd figured, but then again—he'd never really considered himself normal. He'd always considered himself at least a notch above the rest of society, in the grand scheme of things.

Certainly he imagined he was a notch or two above this fellow.

"Fear can save your life, you know. Fear, realistically, should have you far away from me. Far away from anyone in an odd getup, talking about outer space and life and death so easily. What if, in spending time with the senshi—or anyone in weird costumes—you were putting yourself at risk? To go back in space, to be drained of every last drop of energy, to die—for real? Would you still say, then, that fear holds no purpose?"

"I-... I guess?" Steven stammered, obviously confused. If Remarque was making threats they had been absolutely wasted on the green haired boy and practically soared over his head. Because the senshi had just been standing here talking with him all this time He gave him lots of information and warnings about dangerous things. Why would he do any of those things? The implications were never even considered in his naive little head.

"I mean, I don't know... I--... I guess i just..."

Remarque stared at the male and couldn’t help but just let out an exasperated sigh. He rolled his eyes and shook his head before looking at the male again. "Just don't get in with those senshi. Be a good boy and head home. I'll see you around some time."

Or not, if either was particularly lucky. The next time he wasn't sure if he'd be able to pass up the opportunity for energy—and if Steven wandered across any of the more eager agents of Chaos, he'd have one hell of an evening.

OMG it is totally fine <3333

Steven just nodded. Tonight got weird and dark and depressing and it was draining enough. He just adjusted the strap on his bag and went on his way, trying his hardest not to think about... well everything.
