I guess the virus (or ancestors of the virus) would have been given the opportunity to grow adept to humans as well, while spreading from cat to cat.
It's a thing which sometimes happen when a large number of one animal specie is spending a lot of time close to someone of another animal specie. I believe that's how the bird flu may have begun spreading among human beings.
Plausible, but more likely the spread of avian & swine flu to humans was the direct result of laboratory research into these viruses. Either to weaponize them or cross-contamination during the normal course of studying their morphology. I have no doubt in my mind that the latest strains of these two viruses are 100% laboratory born.
I've heard the bird/avian flu most likely have originated from birds, and the swine flu got no known relation to actual swine.
The "swine" part of the name is just a coincident. The virus itself is just a new branch of the common flu family, which may have been the least damaging/lethal of all the other members 'round the first known year of infection.
