Negative cackled a little more triumphant laughter until he saw Sank flip her hair out of her eyes again - oh no, he'd soaked her! How embarrassing. "Oh, whups. Drenched ya," he muttered. He scuffed a hoof in the sediment, clouding the shallow water. "'At ain't a good mate thing ter do, sorry. Kinda new 't this."

Sank burst into laughter. "Oh come on now. We're splashing about in the water If I didn't wanna get wet, I wouldn't have flopped around in here in the first place!" She used the fins on her legs to splash him with a small wave.
"The way I see it, that's how mates behave in water play, yeah?"

After a brief, blank pause, Negative murmured, "Oh, right," sniffed, and added, "I reckon so."

She rolled her eyes at that. There was a difference in being mates, and in... well, being mates. She took a few steps out of the water, feeling much more comfortable being a little further out of the water. "You're a fun fellow. I reckon-" she imitated his word "-we'll be mates for a long time." She was about to step out of the water completely before she looked him dead in the eye. "And no, not mate-mates. Just good mates."
