Because girls could solve mysteries, too.
She heaved another sigh, continuing on her way to the library with her new secretary in toe, trying to come up with a plan but not really knowing where to start. This was all really very difficult, much harder than school work, not only because she didn’t know where to start but also because she wasn’t very fond of admitting she believed in some of this stuff in the first place. It was a learning process, she supposed. That’s what she had to keep telling herself; she was learning something new about the world, something no teacher or parent could show her.
The danger of it, though, was often enough to make her reconsider, and she spared another look at Winston. She didn’t want to drag him into it if it meant he might get hurt. Heck, she didn’t like the thought of getting hurt herself, but at least on her own she hadn’t been responsible for anyone else’s safety.
“You can’t tell anyone we’re doing this either,” she added. “It has to be a secret.”
She didn’t want her reputation being affected, for one. For another, well… there was still a part of her that hoped she was wrong about all this, that she was just making stuff up in her head, and it seemed to her that the less people who inevitably knew about it, the more likely it would be that it wouldn’t be real.
Something told her it would be better that way—if none of it was real.
