"Once you're in the business you're there forever." Mac explained with a small laugh, shaking her head. "Most younger ferrymen end up quitting...kind of hard to have a home life." It was a sad, sad truth...and one of ths big reasons he didn't think a relationship would work. That part he kept to himself though, and tried very hard to knock it as far out of his conscience as possible.
"Two birds with one stone? Awesome. Also I like free things." The Reaper nodded, happy enough to be going out for dinner too. The swat made him chuckle, and he tossed a look over his shoulder - or at least tried to - when she went on a proud little rampage.
"Impressive, I'll give you that, but also kind of silly. What's wrong with a little trim here and there?" Somehow he should have known the next question was coming, but he didn't and it threw him off guard. He paused for a moment, only to decide to ignore it. "...I mean, if you wanna be symbolic about it it's like a---" Once more he trailed off, his this time he stopped walking. He had been looking down as he spoke, and that's when he noticed her knees were the same colour.
"...Uhh, Hel?" He started slowly, setting her down on her feet and turning, following his gaze up what should have been her pale side until he reached her face...and her missing blue eye with lack of white hair. "...What happened to you?"

“A serious life long career, huh?” Hel mused. “That does not sound so bad, though…ah, I see.” She pondered about that for a moment. No real home lives for ferrymen, huh? “Ya know, when I graduate, I want my own little stone and wood cottage! I want it to be far out with no neighbors tucked amongst some trees…but near enough to a town so that I can go food shopping easily…if I become a Trick or Treater, I do not think I will be there a lot…but when I am…it will be home.”
She laughed a bit. “Ha, I figured you did, but that sounds good.” She patted his hatted head, and then huffed. “It is not silly!” Hel cried, and was about to protest more, when Mac paused…and then ignored her. Heeeeeey wait a min—
Hel blinked as she was set on her feet, and the ghoul wiggled her toes in the grass. Oooh, the grass felt so nice on her feet! She was staring down at the grass until Mac asked his question, and then her head snapped back up. “…Uh…what do you mean what happened to me? Besides, you did not answer my question. Why are you ignoring it?” She rested her hands on her hips and waited.

"That...actually sounds really nice. Something small as backup, really." He liked that image she had painted, even if the home would be barely used if it were his...it would still be his. Plus he wouldn't have too worry about someone waiting on him forever; it would just be an empty house. Lonely, but nice.
"I'm not ignoring it." Mac snorted, wrinkling up his nose; how dare she even suggest it! Then gestured at the ghoul with both hands. "I just think this is a little more important! You're a solid colour, Hel. What happened?"

“Ya, that is it exactly! Just somewhere to call your own when you have a bit of time on your hands.”
Hel shook her head. “Ya. You are ignoring it.” She then reached up, and poked his chest. “The fact that you are not answering it makes me wonder what is going on, as well…OH! How about this! I will answer your question once you answer mine!” She grinned a bit. “Fair trade!”

"She doesn't know and besides it doesn't matter what she thinks about it now." He answered stiffly, Hel as always doing a fantastic job about making him put his back up, so to speak. His good mood was well on it's way to being ruined. The Reaper squared his shoulders again before relaxing them, mentally calming himself down.
"Alright, now fess up. What happened?"

Hel’s brows furrowed, and she was about to shoot off with another question, until she snapped her mouth shut. Okay. Okay. He answered her question, as vague as it might have been. But besides it doesn't matter what she thinks about it now sounded kind of…ominous. Did something happen? Gah! She’d ask…soon-ish.
“Okay, okay. Sheesh. Do not get your panties in a bunch.” She reached up and pinched his nose, since he had abused hers plenty of times the last time she hung out with him. “It happened a while ago. I just woke up one morning and the dark was creeping across my skin and hair bit by bit, and my eye color swirled until it stained red.” Hel made a twirl motion with her free forefinger. “I told you when we went out for sushi the first time, that I was blessed? Ha! Well, not really.” She grinned a bit, wiggling his nose back and forth. “You see, back during my mother’s reaping days, she become rather fond of a taken grim reaper, and wooed him, stealing him right out from under her sister in arms…Well, I believe you can imagine that that was pretty upsetting, so the valkyrie cursed their offspring! Mother laughed it off, haha, ya know, and she did not worry when she had eight ghouls and they all came out fine…and then I was born, split! It stayed that way ever since I was born…but then it took over now.”
Here, Hel finally let go of Mac’s nose and shrugged. “Why now? I do not know. I am hopeful in that I believe it only affects my appearance, as I have not felt ill or anything…but if I cease to exist one day, then you now know why!” She laughed then, as if she was terribly amused by this idea. “It would just be my luck. You would pull back my blanket in bed, and there would be a dark stain. Ah, that was once Hel! So lame~” The ghoul brought one of her arms up against her forehead, as if she was lamenting this.

Hel was sprouting a lot of words. He stared at her, trying very hard to pay attention but never quite staying interested in the story. As far as he was concerned that particular past didn't matter; it only affected her appearance, and Hel seemed to always own it. Therefore, it wasn't a negative thing he needed to acknowledge, and therefore his interest wained.
He did, however, try to free his nose, which didn't work.
He'd get you for that, Hel.
"Well, if you cease to exist, I guess I'll miss you." Mac sighed, shaking his head. "But only like, this much--" And he proceeded to show her the milimeter space between his index finger and thumb. "So you just woke up one day and you were all brown? That's weird." But the answer was enough for him, and he pivoted on his heel and started walking away from her, still on his way to the barber shop.
"Well, why not celebrate your change and cut your hair?" He suggested, hands sliding into his pockets. Her appearance was changing, why not help it out? Plus, now he was curious to see what she'd look like with short hair.

Hel laughed. “Well, thank you, I suppose. I know your life would become dull and dark without me to light it with my radiance. Better a little bit than nothing at all, ha! You would get bored without me though. I know you would.” As Mac turned and started to walk away, Hel did a hop skip and a leap after him, falling into step with the reaper, staring down at her bare feet a bit. Hmm…going into town without shoes…oh well! There were plenty of monsters who did it all the time she was sure.
“Oh, no! It happened over the course of a few days…I woke up one day and it was crawling across my skin like ivy!” She trailed off for a moment and looked at him out of the corner of her eye. “Why are you so bent on me cutting my hair, huh?” She reached out and nudged him with an elbow.
“So…one more question, and I promise I will drop the subject after! I will not ask how, or why…so…what happened…?” He should know full well what she was referring to.

"If by light it with radiance you mean burning with stupidity, I agree." Mac snorted, not quite willing to agree with her on this. He would miss her; she was one of the few, if not only, person he could bully and still be on good terms with. The fact she wasn't wearing shoes seemed to miss him, but even if he did realize it, it was quite unlikely that he'd offer his. He just wasn't that guy.
"Aren't you curious what you'd look like with short hair? And you can't tell me you've seen baby pictures with short hair because that doesn't count. You've never cut your hair before, who can say you'd like it better short?" Which might've been why he kept bringing it up. Her elbow was given a brief and unamused stare that then turned towards her face. Yes he did know full well what she was referring to, but that didn't mean he had to like it.
"You gave your word, Valkyrie. He reminded her first, practically gritting his teeth; he would certainly not endure any questions past that one. "We had that talk." That was all he was going to say on the matter; she'd know what talk he meant. As he spoke he turned a corner, heading down one of the side streets.

Hel nudged Mac harder in the ribs with her elbow, but she was laughing regardless. “Well, you must like stupid then, because you keep my company! So ha!” She cheered, pumping one fist into the air as if she had won something.
“No, I do not imagine it short, thank you.” She replied, but now that Mac was making it a point to rub it in…she was kind of imagining—
Nope.
Nope, nope, nope. Instinctively Hel reached to start petting one of her long thick braids. She loved her long thick braids…even if she did almost always get her hair caught in the loom. Mac didn’t need to know that. The ghoul looked up at the reaper seriously as he gritted his teeth and then spoke. Oh. They had that talk. Oh…
Oh…she understood what that meant completely. Oh…wow. Hel was rendered silent for quite a while, her hand frozen on her braid as she walked along with Mac. It was hard to tell what she was thinking, if anything at all, and she seemed to zone out for quite some time before she snapped back to attention. True to her word, nothing further on the matter, and if anything, she was now more focused on working to cheer the reaper up, or at least to keep his mind off of matters. To be there for him, like he was for her.
“…Hey!” She suddenly piped up. “You want to laugh at my misfortune, ya?” She grinned. “I will tell you a story.”

"Of course I like stupid, it's entertaining to see someone be an idiot day in and day out." So take that, Hel! "Why not? It's just hair, it'll grow back." He shrugged, not really caring one way or the other, just...change was always good. "You could see it symbolically too, I guess." He added as a thoughtful afterthought.
Hel stayed true to her word, and Mac was grateful.
"Story? Oh goody." It was hard to tell if he was being sarcastic, but he was at least looking down at her curiously enough.

Hel had nothing else witty to say and deflated at Mac’s words. She pouted for a good moment before she then reached out and punched his arm. Yup. She could always resort to violence when words failed her. “Ew, symbolism.” She scoffed, perking back up now as she was about to tell him of something.
“A few Octobers ago, I went to the school counselor to see if he could help me seek a career path…well, I found him in the filing cabinet, so I tipped it over…as I tried to converse with him, he ended up fleeing from me through a trap door…so I leapt in and followed him…” Hel scratched her cheek. “I landed in something weird…and so for the rest of the day, I was a frog.” She made a face. “Flies taste like chicken, just so ya know.” She stuck her tongue out at him. “I finally got my form back at the day’s end in a pond and I had a dragon fly wing in my mouth!” She waggled her fingers. “So I went back the next day, ready to pop a cap in his a**, and then he got me with laughing gas! I laughed the entire rest of the day, and I would have rather dissipated and have not reformed until the end of the day.”
Hel rubbed her stomach then, getting phantom aches. “So on the third day I came back again and persuaded him to help me finally…oh, and I made him my mentor that day too, because if I can learn how to make that laughing gas, I am so hitting Shun with it...can you imagine him laughing hysterically?”

Mac listened to her story quietly, snickering at the things he heard. It didn't surprise him that Hel was so stubborn; when she wanted something she got it, one way or another! The funny part came from how hard the Counselor fought to avoid her.
"That's something I could have lived without knowing." He informed her; his Uncle loved Flies, but Mac could never bring himself to eat them, no matter how delicious they looked in spaghetti and meatballs. "...Persuaded?" Mac stressed the word, giving her a look. What kind of persuasion, he wondered.
"When you make it, and when you get it on Shun, video it." The idea made him stare glossy-eyed into the distance, a twisted smile on his lips. Oh how he hated Shun, and it was the small fun attacks that were the most fun.
By that time they had arrived at the shop, and Mac moved to hang up his jacket and tuck his hat into it's sleeve. The creature that sauntered up to him was a tiny Ghost with scissors sticking out of her skull. She said something to him, her voice naturally very quiet, and he shook his head.
"No, just me. My friend here is too scared." Then he turned towards Hel, gesturing towards the ling of waiting chairs. "Sit there pansy, I'll be done soon~"

Hel snorted. “The more you know ~” She sang a bit, and then grinned, waggling her brows at the reaper. “Ya. Persuaded.” She let that hang in the air for a moment before she raised a fist. “I whacked him in the head with my fist, and he was cowering behind his desk from me!” Hel laughed then, loudly, placing a hand underneath her chin as she walked along, before she sobered up. “Video tape it?” She echoed, thinking. “…Haaa…ya right. It will be of Shun laughing, and then it will rain blood. My blood. As he slits my throat.” It would be a throat slit Hel would take though.
The ghoul followed him into the barber shop, pausing to look around, suspiciously, as Mac took off his jacket and his hat. You know what ruffled her feathers? Being called scared. Hel immediately bristled. “I am not scared!” She snapped. “I am not a pansy either!” She glared at Mac, resting her hands on her hips.

"Ahaha, I see!" He wasn't sure if he was disappointed in her answer or not, but decided to be not. "Remember, you'll come back! And it'll be worth it~" He had no doubt that Shun would slaughter her, but...laughing Shun. That was worth death, even to someone who feared it.
"Of course you aren't, you stubborn thing." He patted her on the head and ruffled her hair. "Take a seat, I'll be done soon~" And then he turned his back to her to follow the scissor-head ghost to a chair.
