Sumerki looked at the younger guardian askance, suspicious of his intentions. But she did so adore pretty things, especially flowers, even if this one looked a bit the worse for wear. She sniffed at it, then delicately took it from him.
Anna eyed Macaire speculatively, weighing him, measuring the worth of his words. He had spoken true, of that she was certain. Yes. He was a good and honest man, despite his menacing physical appearance. They could do worse than help such a man, especially one gifted with a guardian. Aranka, of course, thought the man ridiculous and generally beneath her notice, but that did not say much. The rook found most humans to be beneath her. However, she did not object to the idea that Anna associate with him, so Anna took that as agreement enough.
"We can, of course, keep your books safe for you," she informed him. "However, I am certain that my brother could help you with your ambition of making more copies."
She frowned at Alexei, disapproving of the way he had absented himself from the conversation - a conversation with his guest, no less.
"Brother," she called, perhaps a bit louder than would usually be considered polite for speaking to one who was sitting but a chair away. When he showed no response, the final member of the room, overlooked in the shadows beneath a table, decided to make himself known. Languidly, the feline stretched before springing quite unexpectedly onto the young lord's lap, startling him badly enough that he had to fumble to keep the books from falling.
"Lior." The name was spoken like a curse. In response, the smug grimalkin merely batted his head against Alexei's hand, demanding attention. He sighed and obliged, giving the beast a thorough petting. Truly, the room was beginning to look like a menagerie.
"Thank you, darling," Anna said to her companion before turning her attention back to her brother.
"Now that we have your attention, we have something to discuss," she informed him, then proceeded to fill him in on what he had missed. Although her account was matter-of-fact, some subtle clue discernible only to her twin must have given him her thoughts on the situation.
"Why yes, certainly," he agreed. "I am sure we can find someone to publish your books, if you like."

Outside, Cadence does a little dance of excitement, stomping around in a little circle to express his absolute glee. Then he will inch forward again -- and if Sumerki dares let him come close, he will not bite. Instead, tail wagging like it might at any moment fall off, he will try to tuck his smaller head under her chin and nuzzle up at her, very much like a fawn might display affection for its mum. She may not want to play, but Cadence, it seems, is in love.
When Anna first speaks on making more copies, Macaire stares at her in bland confusion, quietly replaying her words in his mind and trying to make sense of them. Perhaps he's misheard, or just misunderstood. Nobbles be funny like that, sometimes they say things what don't make no sense, only this didn't seem like one of those moments, did it? He doesn't dare hope, but remains silent as the grimalkin appears, his eyes going wide and round again. Truly, this nobble lady is a woman to be respected! It's a damn good thing she bain't angry with him over his foul mouth, else he'd feel the need to babble and beg afore her --
" .. ye -- what. Beggin' yer pardon, me laird, but .." He trails off abruptly, as if only then becoming aware that they are offering his heart's desire, and he'd been about to argue that they shouldn't! He licks his lips, clearly fumbling with his words, and regards them both with helpless confusion. " .. ah .. oi .. ye will?"

The doe had no idea where his sudden manners had come from, but she was not going to complain. If Cadence wanted to be sweet and cuddly, who was she to protest? Instead, she dipped her head down and gently nipped at his cheek, where a leaf had gotten stuck on his fur. What had caused her sudden change in temperament? It was simple, really. If one was acting poorly, she would have nothing to do with them. If they were being good, well, she had no quarrel with them.
Anna giggled at the man's incomprehension. She supposed it was an unusual offer, for someone such as Macaire. The money did not really mean much to the twins, all things considered, but the offer in and of itself was what mattered.
"Yes," Alexei said, wondering just what was wrong with the man, that he was so flustered. It was a simple enough thing, was it not? Surely his Common was good enough now that he had spoken his intentions clearly.

Perhaps Cadence doesn't know -- for sure, he's just a little thing, with his thoughts little more than bubbles that rise and pop without any rhyme or reason. Perhaps he's just lonely, willing to play even the game of being nice if that means he'll have some kind of attention from her. He makes a slow, soft noise of happiness when she plucks the leaf from his cheek, and leans up to nuzzle her again and again, ready to fold his legs and sit curled up against her in the grass, beaming with pleasure.
Macaire, meanwhile, is looking back and forth between the two, utterly lost. This was not at all what he expected of the interview -- he expected youth, because the young are more likely to be open-minded to a gypsy and a soldier, but he also expected scorn, even indifference. Not interest. Not willingness. Not this! For a moment he can't say anything at all, and finally he gives Anna a pitiful look, as if begging her to reassure him that this really is true. If she confirms it, he'll believe it. They may find it funny, since Anna is the female here, but in Macaire's eyes she's the one that demands more respect.

Even if he was being needy, when he was being sweet, Sumerki could not seem to resist a twinge of maternal affection towards Cadence. She did not often come across other guardians, and even when she did, she rarely showed much interest in them. However, even creatures as solitary as guardians must surely feel the need to be near their own kind from time to time.
Anna snapped open her fan again, hiding another smile at Macaire's expense. The poor thing. Great, big soldier-man looked as lost and confused as a little boy being told for the first time that his world-view was wrong. Perhaps he and his guardian were more suited for each other than they at first seemed.
"You will have to speak of the details with my brother, of course," she said, confirming Alexei's words without directly addressing Macaire's unspoken question. "He is much more familiar with such things than I."

Poor Macaire's world view has been turned on its head so many times recently that he's lost count. First, meeting the Guardians and not believing them. Then the totem. Then Cadence appearing. Then no one believing him that war was coming -- then finding those that did believe him! And now this, learning that nobles can be open-minded, even kind! His confusion melts into gratitude; he still very clearly doesn't understand why they're doing this, but if Anna is going to reassure him then he doesn't care. He thanks her just as silently as he'd asked for her reassurance, with a look, and glances back to Alexei again.
"Mayhap would be fer best if'n oi came back when me laird's had a chance tae read them through, and think on how t'would be best tae have it done." He proposes this hesitantly, partly because he thinks it will be easier to talk to Alexei when he doesn't have to have Anna drag him out of the book every other second .. and partly because he has very little idea how something like this is done. But it will be done, he's certain of that; as much as he respects (and yes, fears) Anna, he also clearly trusts her and takes her words as the complete truth.
Outside, Cadence is afire with happiness, and looks up every few seconds to nuzzle Sumerki again. He is not often around someone like her, human or Guardian. During the day he stays at a tavern, where the only women are serving wenches, rarely elegant, rarely graceful, hardly ever well-behaved; at night Macaire trains him, and he plays with other guardsmen, soldiers, and stable-boys. He radiates smugness, as if, could he speak, he would already be bragging about the gorgeous older lady he's been allowed to sit next to.

Anna smiled quietly to herself, smoothing the feathers on Aranka's chest. It was a good thing, to help one in need; and if they happened to earn a debt of gratitude from him, well, she was not going to protest. For all he had a good heart, she felt that Macaire could be a most useful ally to them. He may have come to Alexei on a borrowed favor, but she knew they had promised him far more than he had expected. Her brother may not expect anything in return, but Anna knew it was there for the asking, if she found need of it.
"Hmm? Oh. Yes, yes," Alexei agreed absently, already feeling the lure of the book beckoning him to return. "Come back the day after tomorrow." That should give him ample time to finish the books and perhaps speak to a printer or two.
As for Sumerki, though she would never admit it, she did take a certain pleasure in Cadence's company. Likely, this little incident is all it will take for her to count the younger guardian amongst those in her care, whether she will often see him or not.

Oh, there is much that Macaire would do for Anna that he would not do for anyone else -- for a woman, for a noble, for a witch? It'd be more than just the favor owed: it'd be her right to direct him as need required, and his duty to obey.
The soldier tries and fails to conceal his astonishment over the brief period of time that Alexei will need (this time he doesn't ask Anna to confirm; with the way Alexei is looking at the book, Macaire suspects it will have to be pried out of his hands so that he can eat, bathe, and sleep). "Aye, mi'laird." He bows deeply to Alexei, even as he wonders if the young man will even notice, and then bows even more deeply to Anna, glancing up at her as he rises.
"M'lady. T'were an honor tae meet ye, it were." For a moment he struggles with himself, as if he means to say something more, and then finally he gives up, the words he uses so well in his little 'scribblings' apparently failing him here. " .. oi thank ye, both of ye." He says it quietly and simply, though he means it with all his soul.
Then glancing out the window, he gives a low whistle which causes Cadence's ears to p***k up, the Guardian looking directly to him. "Hsst, me lad. Meet me at thonder door, aye?" He tips his head, then backs his way out of the library where he has enjoyed his audience, presumably to meet Cadence at the servant's entrance where he first came inside the grand manor.
Cadence, tipping his head up to Sumerki once more, will nuzzle all the way along her flank and then back at her neck again, pressing his smaller head with its little antler nubs against her firmly. Only then will he depart, tail flipping merrily and ears set forward.

Sumerki snorted slightly at Cadence's impertinence, but did nothing to retaliate as she watched him depart.
Inside, Alexei barely managed a nod of acknowledgment before he was lost to the world once more and Anna, well, she stared at the closed doors long after the man had disappeared behind them, smoothing Aranka's feathers and indulging in silent contemplation. Quite suddenly, a brilliant smile graced her lips and her eyes seemed to glow with the light of her good humor as she turned away from the door. Oh, yes. This was going to be a most interesting acquaintance.
