Lex's face went flat, before taking on a smallish grin. "It was just a question, really." He twirled the pen Regal became around his fingers, sighing softly. "I need to get studying anyway, lots to learn about runes, medicine, surgery, history, all that stuff. Regal just wants me to use him daily, but I can always come back later."
He pocketed the pen, approaching Ami. "You know, not everything I say is to try and woo you. Sometimes I'm actually trying to be friendly - it's always good to get to know the people you'll be around." His voice held no mirth, but no malice - just an even flat tone.
"But if we're both heading in the same direction, then we may as well just walk together for a while."

Ami rubbed the back of her neck, actually feeling somewhat ... bad? about making assumptions. Normally her assumptions were final, definitive. She was a judgmental sort, the stubborn kind that stuck to her judgments. Lex made it hard though, calling her out for her rudeness. Most people slunk away at the challenge.
"Sorry," was all she could say. "We can walk together." So she did just that. Walked. It was a start.
It was a good thing Lex was handsome. At least when she was glaring it gave her something to look at. "Can I see him? Regal, I mean." She was looking down, pointedly. For whatever reason, the weapon fascinated her. Perhaps subconsciously she wanted to have her own weapon back so badly that she was beginning to grow fascinated with others'.

"Not a problem, just don't assume so much about people." Lex was really trying to be a nice guy in this situation. He hated having a bad reputation put on him, but he had no clue what Ami had been through. Maybe her actions and attitude were justified? Maybe she'd been played by someone, or by multiple someones, and was just calloused to men.
<< Wow, deep thinking there whelp. >>
< Shut up. >
The walked, and Lex's gait eased a little. "Yeah, here." He handed the blonde a fanciful ballpoint pen, making sure to give her a small smile. "Or did you want to see him summoned?"

"They're not all assumptions when based on objective fact," Ami said quickly, taking Regal from his hands. A simple pen, the runes pulsing faintly in her hands like all weapons did.
She turned the pen over in her hand, smiling gently. Ami had a genuine love of runes, and learning in general. It stressed her out, it drove her crazy, but she really liked it. "Mmm, see this one here?" She said, holding it up and pointing to a rune as they walked. "It's ah ... wunjo. Perfection." A smirk crossed her face. "And this one." Her fingers slid down to a modified version of the chinese symbol. "Flight."
"That's all I know," she said, handing the pen back to Lex.

Whoa, everyone stop. Just stop everything. Ami was smiling, genuinely smiling.
And Lex thought it was one of the best smiles he'd seen. He wouldn't even make a retort to her whole objective fact vs. assumptions deal. Just watch her smile for a second. Then listen to what she had to say.
"Perfection. That's just great." Lex rolled his eyes and smiled, voice having regained its mirth. Of course Squawker would have the rune for perfection on him - his Trainee would actually be disappointed if he didn't. "Flight makes sense, though." He took the pen with a smile and appreciative nod, pocketing the weapon.
<< I can't believe you just gave me away, whelp. >>
< Cry me a river, squawker. >
<< The hell did you just call me. >>
"So, what does your weapon look like?"

Smile gone, face stony again. Happiness lost in a matter of seconds.
"He's really pretty," she admitted. "Onyx, with bright gold runes- sort of like Regal's, actually." She clenched a fist at her side, hand forming a perfect 'O' where Junpei would fit. As if that would really summon him. "He has these blades he's so proud of," she said, holding her hands up about a foot apart. "They're huge."
Realizing that hand gesture was a tad embarrassed, she put her hands back down and said, "Mmm. I suppose he's like any other glaive."

Whoops. Maybe talking about her weapon wasn't the best thing ever.
"Sounds beautiful." Lex said as they continued walking down the corridor, fiddling with Regal in his pocket. This was usually the time he'd say something smooth or classy to win her over. But he wasn't doing that with Ami. She'd been played from what the trainee could tell, and he wasn't going to be the douche to do it again.
So what to say?
"Where are you from?"
Hell, why not.

Ami blinked in genuine surprise. People didn't ask her personal questions. People didn't ask her anything. One glare and they were out of the room, talking to their friends about "that bitchy life lady."
"New York," she responded placidly. Not initially maybe, but her heart had always been there. She was a New Yorker through and through. She didn't want this conversation focused on herself though. If they talked about New York, he would eventually come up. No way in hell. "It doesn't matter now though."
Switch subjects, switch subjects. "You?"

"Oh, New York. I've met people from New York - no clue why they came to Nevada when there's such a big night life in their state." Lex gave a fond chuckle, rubbing the back of his head. New Yorkers...the ones he'd met had almost drunk him under the table. Almost.
"That's where I'm from; Nevada. Las Vegas to be exact." He continued to grin, almost stupidly. He like Vegas well enough, but there were too many shadows in the clubs and casinos. If he hadn't left, he would have gone insane.
"Worked as a club manager, sometimes a bouncer."

Lex rolled his eyes playfully, and gave her a slight shove to the shoulder.
"And you're just as rude as a New Yorker." He was teasing, of course.

Ami lurched forward quite a few feet from the shove. She was tiny, Lex was huge, and she wasn't expecting it. For a few moments she was actually mad, and then she realized he was messing with her. Again.
This man was absolutely bizarre. People didn't playfully touch her, didn't pester her for more than a few minutes. She wasn't inept from human contact, but she liked her independence and kept it that way or purpose. She'd found in the past that letting people in simply allowed them to bore holes in her on the way out.
A scowl shot his way and she said, "Says the man shoving a woman." She reached forward to grab a doorway in front of them and held it open for Lex, gesturing him in.

"Says the woman who pointed a gun to my face and won't let me practice chivalry." Les teased, walking through the door anyways. He was not going to be that douche who stopped and insisted that no, the lady should go in. She wanted to hold the door for him, so he would let her do it.
"Sorry about sending you fifty feet, I forget my own strength at times." Another joke, though he was being more serious with that one. 6 feet compared to 5 was quite the difference.
The continued down the hall, until making it to a lounge that Lex had 'staked.' There were books piled up on an armchair, and a mug full of still hot sludge coffee. "Well, here's my study."

If Ami was bothered about the shove she didn't make a point to throw a hissy fit about it. She was used to get pushed around, quite frankly. She'd been short her whole life, this jest was nothing new.
Her eyes widened in recognition. A frustrated facepalm x 2 to her face. "It would be you," she muttered, low enough that Lex couldn't hear it.
For unbeknownst to Lex, this was Ami's library-lounge. She didn't care if it was free to all hunters. She didn't care if technically she believed every library and study and lounge was hers. This was hers. "Have you tried tea?" She'd convert anyone she knew to being a tea person. Everyone needed the joys of tea.

"Yeah...not to my liking, to be honest. It's just not strong enough, plus I'm not a big fan of the concept of drinking leaf juice." Lex shrugged, picking up the still warm coffee. "Though, I'm willing to bet the tea here isn't sludge." He took a sip, making a little bitter face before putting a smile back on. "At least it's something."
He sat down in the chair like he normally would, rump on the head and feet in the actual chair part. He was more comfortable this way. "So, why don't you check out my reading material and tell me what you think?"
She was probably going to call him an idiot, tell him to sit in the chair the right way, and that these books were for toddlers. He smiled regardless, handing her the copy of Norse Runes and Grammar he'd checked out from the library, along with The Basics of First Aid and Gryphons: The Kings of Realms.
"I'm sure you read far beyond my level."
