Jove gave his brother a watery look full of worried skepticism. Why would Ren say he was dying, only to say he wasn't? Was he lying? Was he just saying he wasn't dying in an attempt to make things easier?
There was clearly something wrong with the gryphon. The weakness and the coughing, the sudden sneezes that startled him even when he saw it coming, even the heat he could feel against his back. That wasn't normal body temperature for most monsters, his brother included. What was this, if not dying?

Ren inched around so that he was sitting sideways beside Jove, with his arms still draped around his shoulders, and leveled a look at him.
"Hey," he said seriously. "Look. Would I do that to you? Leave you alone? As overbearing and ridiculously protective as I am, would I ever leave you behind?"
He gave Jove what he hoped was an encouraging smile and leaned forward, pecking his little brother's cheek.
"I'm not leaving you anytime soon. I'm staying right here, and I'll be just as obnoxious and overbearing as I always am."

Jove did the first thing he could think of. Grab a pillow, and proceed to beat his brother senseless. He was so pulled apart inside, still not entirely sure what was going on, and he took out his frustrations rather violently. Tears were blinked back as he smacked Ren over the head several times, making up for his weak attack in sheer determination.
If Ren wasn't dying, Jove was gonna kill him. Jack, if he WAS dying, Jove would kill him then too.

Ren was feeling much better, mentally.
For a few seconds, at least.
"OW JOVE WHAT - cough hack cough - JOVE WHY ARE YOU - wheeze - HITTING BIG BROTHER?!"
With the last bit of effort remaining, Ren flung himself towards the pup and promptly flopped on top of him, laying sideways across his stomach (without actually crushing the poor kid) and essentially pinning him in place.
"Stop that."

With his primary method of expressing his emotions no longer an option, Jove could only struggle against his brother's dead weight. And whine. A soft noise at first, it turned into quite the whimper as he also abandoned his struggling. He didn't even want to throw pillows anymore.
The pup sniffled, and tried not to look at Ren. He just wanted to know what was going on, he had never seen his brother so beat up. What could have happened to him overnight that would reduce him to this possibly dying mess? And what could Jove do at all that would keep him from dying?
For a being without a real heart, Jove sure felt it aching.

Ren possibly could have gotten up and moved to the bed, but that would have involved effort and so he didn't do anything and just flopped there. But after a second he rolled over so he was no longer squashing Jove.
"I'm not dying," he said again. "I'm just...okay, I said I was dying, and I'm really sorry because that was a stupid thing to say and I'm not really dying I'm just miserably sick and really I'm a dumb, overprotective older brother and I'm sorry."
This rather impassioned speech was followed by a series of hacking coughs and a couple of pathetic wheezes.

Jove sniffled again, but his whines quieted as he gave Ren a "you promise you aren't dying?" look. He didn't want to believe his brother was dying, it had scared him half to death just hearing it when Ren was in such a state! Just the thought made Jove's ears fold back, and he headbutted his brother in the chest in a rough cuddling way. He didn't want to think of Ren dying.
But even if his brother wasn't nearing the end of his life, whatever it was that was wrong with the gryphon was still pretty bad. If Ren was falling over, it was bad!
The pup turned his head up to watch his brother's face with big, worried eyes. How could he make this better? How did one care for a sickly person?

Ren turned his head and leveled a look at Jove from where he lay flopped on the floor.
"I promise," he said. "I'm not dying. Swear to Jack."
Lifting a hand, he fluffed his little brother's hair and then pulled him down for another hug, squeezing him tightly and nosing his hair affectionately.
"Promise. I'm just stupidly sick. I'm not going anywhere."

Jove let out a little huff of acknowledgment, closing his eyes tight and accepting the affectionate gestures. But the peace only lasted a second before the pup decided he had to do something about this 'stupidly sick' Ren had. How did one stop being sick?
The ghost pulled back and eyed his brother, noting the red eyes and pale skin. And the coughing, and the fever. How would he get rid of it all and make Ren feel better?
After a minute of thought he got up and trotted away. To the bathroom. And when he returned, he was brandishing Ren's razor with a very, very determined expression. Those cooties had to go. It was the only way.

Ren let go of Jove somewhat reluctantly, but then he laid back down and closed his eyes, relaxing. He could hear his little brother moving around in the bathroom and assumed he was getting a bowl of water or maybe a drink.
"Jove, what are you - " he started to say, and opened his eyes.
Then he stared blankly.
"And just what, pray tell, are you going to do with that?"

Jove didn't say a word. He just focused Ren with a very serious 'this is for your own good' expression, and sat down next to the gryphon.
Although he had been sort of sick himself a little while ago, it manifested in little more than sleep. And more sleep. The pup had curled up in his room and slept through pretty much all of it, and without any firsthand experience he had no idea how to treat a sick person. All that stuff about soup and drinks and medicine... Not a single helpful thing crossed the little ghost's mind.
Just cooties.
The pup had seen Ren shave before, and it didn't look that hard. Just one smooth motion and his brother would be cootie-free. With a frown he reached out, expecting his brother to put up no struggle in his current floppy state.

"Jove what are you doing - Jove - Jove no. Jove - Jove put the razor down and step away from big brother - "
Before Jove could do any serious damage, Ren had flung himself to the side and was now crawling pathetically across the rug to see if he could get away from his obviously hallucinating brother.
"Jove why are you so mean to big brother."

Jove grabbed his brother's tail, frowning. Couldn't Ren see it was for his own good? He had a couple foxfires that protested when he tried to trim their nails, but they had to have it done! Otherwise they just wouldn't be comfortable!
"Hold still," the pup said as he tugged at Ren's tail. He just had to get those cooties off, and everything would be okay!

Ren's escaping was abruptly put to a stop.
"OW JOVE RUDE - "
Digging his fingernails into the carpet, Ren attempted to drag himself further away from the terror that was currently his little brother and only succeeded in getting a few inches in before he was out of breath and wheezing pathetically again.
He wrapped his wings protectively around his body and said, in a muffled voice,
"No I will not hold still I am not letting you shave me."

Jove huffed, his older form more capable of expressing frustration without making people want to pinch his cheeks. He put down the razor. And then gave Ren a shove.
What did he have to do to make his brother feel better? Certainly abusing Ren was not helping, but that hadn't been his intention anyway.
