Melvin held his cup with both hands, nurturing it as if it was the Spice of life, and sipping it slowly. There was a lot that could keep someone from college, and he looked up as he was waiting for her to explain, but it seemed a disclaimer was in order.

Taking one more sip, he set his coffee down. It wasn't good to maybe freak out over something when you have coffee in your hands. Valuable, glorious coffee that he didn't want staining his clothes or being wasted. "I can try not to freak out. I can't promise not to react to something." He looked up at her. "I promise to try not to freak out." He said, wondering what a girl who could draw penises on faces would need to ask a promise like this first for.

"Wellll... basically I was in an asylum. I swear I wasn't crazy though! Just thought I was.
" she gave him a weary look, quietly gauging his response to this little factoid about her past life. Fingers carefully turning her mug of coffee around and around.

Melvin's eyes did go wide, and he stared at her, but her sentences quickly added a bit more information. Not enough though, as Melvin cautioned to ask a bit more. "How crazy did you think you were? Were you...self admitted?" If she walked in and said to be institutionalized, that was one thing. If she lashed out, tore some guy's face off, and was sentenced by the state, that was another.

Rin frowned at his wide eyes and pouted just a bit before divulging a bit more information, "I was seeing shadows and hearing s**t... I just wanted to be fixed... and I was scared. So I thought I was very crazy... but really as it turned out... hunter skills, that's all."

She shrugged at Melvin, "Didn't you see s**t before you came here? Didn't people think you were a crazy psycho?"

This sorta talk wasn't something he liked discussing, namely because it always made him uncomfortable. He spent his life talking about this to other people before, and he came with a sick feeling each time. By now, even mentioning it tended to upset his stomach, but he paused a moment to consider that this was the place to talk about it.

"Yes, they did, but I was a little too young to admit myself to any asylum. I just took counseling, and then ..." He made a vague turn of his hand a few times in the air. "....grew to take care of it my own way."

He went back to sipping his coffee a bit. "How old were you when you first started seeing them?"

"I honestly don't know when I started. I just know I was sixteen when they finally got to me. I was working my first job. It went well beyond creepy feelings and shadows that night...," she trailed off and resumed turning her mug in her hands again. "How did you take care of it and how old were you?"

He felt like he was in a group meeting admitting his first encounter with aliens or drugs, and it was rubbing him the wrong way. He spent a lot of time talking normally and making the fact he saw shadows a very minor part of his life that even talking about it publicly like this had him feeling as if he was being analyzed by someone who didn't know and was ready to jot something down on a piece of paper. Despite the fact he was sipping coffee in the Deus cafeteria as a trainee, wearing the coat of this organization, he really wasn't comfortable talking about it.

"I was 12." He said, sipping some more coffee after he admitted his age. "I just got used to not reacting. If you don't react, no one asks if anything is wrong. They don't get worried. People can tell when you are on edge. It freaks them out." It also had them feeling angry when you didn't explain or when you gave off what they perceived as false alarms. No one wanted to hang with someone who jumped at every little noise.

Rin bobbed her head along, for her it was simply a fact; an undeniable fact that this is who they all were. It may have bothered her too and more than likely did when she first woke up. There were many doubts about the legitimacy of Deus and the people within it... but time and experience. Well. She learned.

"Gone are the days at least... because we all see them here. Every last one of us," she wasn't sure if that was effective in being helpful. Rarely was she ever so it wouldn't surprise her if it wasn't. Still, she put on a calm smile and heaved a light sigh before asking about something else, "Do you have hobbies, then?"

He looked away, at the few people eating dinner. "Enough to fill an island." In terms of the entire world, it wasn't much, but it was far more than he ever expected in his lifetime before coming here. It would have started up a choir of angels had he met just one person who saw what he saw, but now he was on an entire island where there was actual evidence of history and research, more people not accounted for due to untimely ends, that all saw what he saw. Here, this was considered normal. He was considered normal.

He looked back to her. "Well, I watched movies. Hanged out with people I knew." Cleaned. Collected memorabilia. Dodged monsters in alleys."Just normal things. You?"

That normalness he is only just now realizing is a big part of why she was so content these days. It was somewhat nice not to be a freak. Not only not a freak, but special in ways that made them heroes. It was intriguing and she felt in some ways like she got revenge. Even with death and danger looming at every corner, she was still now better than those that judged her. Stronger. Wiser.

She smirked a bit to herself, "God man, you're so normal. I just studied a lot and I enjoyed gardening. It's much harder to do the gardening on this island though." She paused with a thoughtful look as she tried to recall any other hobbies she may have been missing, "Oh! I also like to order and label things. If you ever need your stuff sorted and labeled, I have the best label maker ever."

Melvin rose his hands in defense, smiling as he did so. "Whoa. Sorry if I am too bland for this place." He certainly hadn't come from an asylum. "From what I see, quirky is the normal here. I guess I'm just as weird here than out there." He of course was not taking this hard. Between mood swings and walking backwards, he could deal with being the normal guy.

"You can't garden because.....of all the attacks?" He wasn't sure how frequent they were. "I didn't know it was that often we got hit by some weird attack." Kinda made you worried to sleep at night - kinda. If Rin waking up was any indication, he wasn't having too hard of a time at it.

"Oh, I'm not to the point of labeling. I keep my room tidy as it is. I don't share with anyone so there is no reason to claim dibs on my toothbrush. I'm not a kid anymore." Where his siblings had to grab things and shout DIBS whenever they wanted it. Dibs on the chair. Dibs on that cupcake. Dibs on the front seat.

"Nah," Rin frowned to herself. "There's not enough sun. Most plants I like just... die. I could keep really low light things but it is just not the same," there was a clear sense of sadness to her tone but it was quickly shoved aside and a smile forced forth to replace it. "If anyone is bland I would think it were me. I don't label to claim possession so much as indicate where certain things belong. I rarely have anyone in my room... but it's still nice to have them," she shrugged a shoulder. "No one seems to get it except for... well. Everyone here seems to know and watch a lot of movies. I didn't really. Except... well... documentaries and ... one I really wasn't supposed to at the time."

"Ah. Ever consider getting a small greenhouse to put in your room. Then all you need is a artificial light. I...know it's not the same, but it's better than nothing or watching all your attempts die." He glanced up to the lights above. "So that weather out there doesn't let up? I thought we were just in some weird cloud front. Guess no one gets a tan here." Not that it mattered for him, but it was nice to have some sun once in a while.

The movies did have his attention, and he picked up his coffee to nurture it again. "What movie were you not supposed to see?"
PostPosted: Thu Sep 20, 2012 2:44 pm

"I've considered it... but it would require more room than I have and a lot of permissions. Since electronics don't generally like to work here; they need to be fixed up in the labs. I'd imagine... lights would also need explained and converted," Rin really didn't want to have to explain grow lights to a lab full of trolls. No matter how possibly rewarding if they did not screw with it to make her plants attack her.

"Oh," she looked a bit guilty, "Alien... I wasn't supposed to but I just... really really..."

Melvin's eyes widened as he suppressed a smile. "Which....Which Aliens did you watch? The first one?" He was failing at trying to hide his sudden interest. "What did you think of it?"
