"You two see those blue/brown mountains in the distance? I want you to run side by side, until you stand in their shadow. Then send the hawk who is waiting there back to me. Understood? Any questions? Cardinal your task is to run alongside Me'urra, prod him if you have to, slow if needed but never slow below a trot, ever. If he gets to far behind, return to me." Avalanche nodded at the two. "I suggest you leave now, as it is cool and you should make it most of the way before the sun begins to burn upon your backs."

His violet eyes scanned the terrain leading to where Avalanche wanted them to run. It was rocky, hilly with a good number of places where an Azrein could break a leg if not careful. Personally he would have preferred to fly it, but if Avalanche wanted him to run then who was he to object. Looking at Avalanche’s latest little project he felt a surge of annoyance. He was going to have to watch out for this little brat? Still Avalanche did say that prodding was alright. Smiling in delight at the turn his thoughts had taken he nodded to Avalanche. Very well then sir, I’m honored you chose me for this task. Breaking in newbie’s was tedious and what else could this other stallion be? Moving along at a decent trot he tossed a comment back to the blue male. Hurry up girlie or you’ll fall behind.

Snorting Me’urra hurried to catch up with the male. He had seen the way to go and he could tell he would need to conserve his stamina if he hopped to get all the way to the mountains. Catching up to the male he had wanted to inform the bird Azrein that he wasn’t a girl and had a name, as soon as he caught up thought the bird sped faster. Not wanting to fall behind and have Avalance find out Me’urra sped up again soon enough the pair were racing alongside one another. It wasn’t as fast as Me’urra could go but he wondered if his stamina would last longer than his opponent. Focusing on his breathing he didn’t waste his time trying to speak. It would be pointless and he was smarter than to waste his breathe when he might need it later.

Avalanche nodded at Cardinal. He knew the stallion was less then thrilled at this task but might actually enjoy it once he got out there. Me'urra however might not have much fun at all. Which when Avvy admitted it might just be the point of the excersize. Avalanche watched their tense forms glide off into the distance and wondered how long this would really take. Me'urra might have some mettle, and the goading would sure help.

Smiling to himself he knowing this was a test for the newbie Cardinal decided to push the new boy. Life wasn’t fair and one had to be prepared for it. So rather than trying to go faster which would have been hard for him, he steached out a wing and gave the other Azrein a hard shove with it. He laughed when he saw the blue Azrein veer off his trek and stumble into the ground. To the male’s credit the fall didn’t stop him. Instead he landed with a skid and didn’t stop getting right back up and following Cardinal. A pity, the red Azrein would have loved to report the failure to keep going at a trot to Avalanche.

Angry and annoyed at himself he could feel the cuts on his legs and that made him go faster. He wanted to catch up to that jerk and bite him the was supposed to be training not a fight. In truth he was feeling tired. Having done the pebble exercise and not gotten a good night’s sleep was slowly eating at Me’urra’s strength and he didn’t have much to start from. He found himself falling behind and just had to keep pushing himself or he would fail.

Avvy would not make Me'urra fight Cardinal. He would have to scour the countryside for a fight rival. Come to think of it, there were some new recruits that had just been brought in and some older ones that came for a visit. That seemed like a good place to look.

-including a bit of a time skip-
Laughing aloud he knew it wouldn’t take to long to grind this new boy into the dust. How hard had the male hit the ground before? It must really sting to run right now. Each time the younger male got close he would swing out a wing at the male trying to knock him over. Had the pretty boy even got close he would have bitten at him. Pity the male never got that close. The pair kept racing for a while with the blue male falling further behind with the assaults and the pain. Cardinal’s ears flipped back as he kept racing. He heard something that made his day.

Me’urra was straining by now and he was starting to fail. His long mane and tail were a detriment to him here. He knew it too. Swearing softly to himself he was pushing himself forward more but the exertion was too much his legs gave out from under him and he fell to the earth with a crash. He heard laughing and looked up to see the red male slowing and circling while laughing at him. It was more painful than Me’urra wanted to deal with he would have kicked the male had he gotten close but the male was just sitting there a ways away laughing.

Avalanche puttered over to where some of the new azrein were waiting. Oh dear, that one would be perfect. Little did Avvy know that this stallion was gonna become a bane on his existance.

Tiburnon Meer watched the appearance of the fabled grey stallion and smirked. He knew Avalanche was interested in him. He liked it that way, something to manipulate and from one of such power. He was at the very least excited. It had been a good idea to come down from the rolling hills a very good idea.

"If I could have a word Tiburnon."

"Of course your greyness."

Avalanche gave him a flat look, used to sass like that only from those who had not grown into their legs, but this male was powerful, well muscled and intelligent. So why pick a fight?

“Well now you’ve gone and failed Avalanche’s little test. What a pity.” Cardinal’s voice was calm and even was almost convincing in caring. Then he went and ruined it all by laughing. His laugh was loud and cruel. “Now then since you’ve failed and it will take a while to reach Avalanche again I’d suggest you get up and start walking, unless you’d like me to drag you back by that overlong tail of yours?” He wanted the male to fight back so that he would have an excuse to inflict more punishment on him. He wondered how Avalanche would take the new recruits failure. A part of him hoped that the new male would be dropped by Avalanche and then just folded elsewhere in the herd. It was how Cardinal had first met Sumac. A weak male who was smart and knew to keep his head down. Cardinal only had to punish half a dozen times before Sumac had become trained enough that Cardinal used him for tasks and messages. Perhaps he could do that with this male too.

Me’urra grunted loudly as he gathered his bloodied legs under him and stood up. He had a number of bruises and cuts on his body that he hoped would at least stop bleeding by the time he got back. He was biting the inside of his mouth so that he wouldn’t back talk the other male. It was bad enough he failed he would not show more of his frustration. He could taste his blood and spit out a mouthful of saliva and blood. Turning he started back to face Avalanche with anger in his heart and a desire to one day make Cardinal pay.

Avalanche had pursed lips as he considered this new male. His spice disturbed Avalanche, this stallion was also a lot younger then he. Not a well... not a grey hair to be seen on that blood red hide.

"Whassamatter did you swallow a lemon?"

That rich, smooth voice infiltrated his conscience, what a prat. "No I have not. I have a job for you Tiburnon. I have a trainee who needs pounded out for he is of course mettle he should be back soon. Once he has had a bit of a break you will be fighting him."

"A favor from the great Avalanche, what a good deal. I suppose it would be worth the chance of a few scars, they seem to be popular with the ladies. Or in your case the men."

Avalanches eye twitched. It was the accent it must be the accent. This azrein was from an old lineage. Ancient in fact, Avalanche was from a rival family also ancient. The two had never seen eye to eye and apparently that was still the case. Of all the gall. The impossible, infernal ..... Oh look Me'urra was back. Avalanche had a hard time not glaring at Tiburnon. He should be impartial. But a part of him wanted to see Me'urra rip a nice strip off that perfect red hide. He was to old for this crap.

-travel time skip.-

Strutting back to Avalanche was amusing. Me’urra was scrapped up and bleeding and clearly in pain. That didn’t stop Cardinal from jabbing Me’urra with reminders of his failure every fifty yards or so. It was like the greatest gift of all had fallen at his hooves. It was so much fun to cause Me’urra to suffer. As they got back to Avalanche Cardinal was all smiles. “Sir, we’re back. I’m afraid that Me’urra never got as far as you wished for him to. He had a bit of a tumble.” Laughing sardonically Cardinal used a wing to ‘nudge’ Me’urra one more time. It wasn’t as hard in front of Avalanche but it was still heard enough to make the blue male wince and cough.

The blood on his legs was starting to dry but his wounds were still oozing. He didn’t say a word but just shot Cardinal a short glare before looking at Avalanche’s hooves. He had blood around his maw dribbling out from his mouth. He knew had failed in his task and didn’t need the red menace to point that out. He was going to stay silent and figure out want Avalanche wanted to do with him next. Would he be turned away? He hoped not but he wasn’t certain. If he were, what would he do? Certainly not go back to his mother’s friends. They would eat him alive. Perhaps he could just kill Cardinal later and perhaps deal with things in his own way?

Avalanche blocked out Tiburnon for a minute and concentrated on Me'urra's face. The stallion looked dejected which was the point, Avalanche had known he wasn't going to make it too those mountains without wings of his own. Cardinal had both helped and hindered but the point here was that Me'urra needed to show spirit. Look up, look up for me Me'urra Avalanche thought. He needed to see the rage, the hunger, the will to carry on and trounce that featherbrain. Cardinal was entirely too good at what he did.

"Well met Cardinal. My name is Tiburnon. A pleasure to meet you."

Oh gods the two of them together. Avalanche hid his thoughts behind a mask and concetrated on staring at Me'urra not saying a thing till the blue made a move.

Cardinal couldn’t resist it seeing the other male with his head staying down he looked at the other male with a smile. “Hello Tiburnon lovely bangles. They set off your coat very nicely. I should get some myself, and perhaps if there were a feminine version available we could get a pair for Me’urra?” He grinned at the other stallion and watched as every muscle on Me’urra’s body held perfectly still. Was the blue boy about to cry now? He certainly hoped so.

Slaughtering Cardinal in his sleep would be to swift a death for the featherbrained fool. No Me’urra wanted to tie him down and have him tortured slowly. Perhaps starting with the wings. Each feather plucked out individually before being stabbed back into the b*****d’s legs and ground around slowly to increase the pain. Yes that thought was amusing. Around his maw more blood oozed because he was biting his cheek to keep from retaliating. He was tired and this Cardinal was pushing him too far. His eyes were that of anger and hatred but he kept them glued firmly at Avalanche’s feet. To cause dissension amongst the ranks would not be a good way to start getting his revenge. Nor would it serve any purpose other than proving he had no control of himself. He would not give into the birds taunts, not here.

(Thank goodness even a goof like me can code red. *wants mountain dew now...)

Avalanche thought the two reds together would be an awful idea. Bangles indeed. He looked sadly at Me'urra. The lad had to show he was in there. Avalanche admired his strength yes, but the lad had to look at him instead of putting fiery holes into his hooves. Avalanche could feel it.

Tiburnon smirked. "I'm sure I could find a set, perhaps in pink? It would set off his coat nicely along with all the blood."

Where was Jeppe when he needed him. That was apparently the only red stallion that said what he meant and didn't bat at his prey. Fed up Avalanche waited until the other two were not looking and kicked Me'urra in the shin, needed to see his eyes and the fire he KNEW was there.

Oh I do so love the way you think. As for the blood it seems that the boy really needs to learn how to walk.” Cardinal smiled at Tiburnon and shifted his wings comfortably. He really had no more interest in Me’urra after all the male hadn’t done anything even remotely aggressive. This one was even more pathetic than Sumac.

His head jerked up at the kick. The heated rage and loathing for Cardinal had not yet cleared from his face and the sudden annoyance at being kicked was clear too. His eyes found Avalanche’s and he realized his fault to soon. He quickly smothered the flames of hatred to a dull smolder but he knew it was too late. There was no way that the older stallion had not seen it all. Careless and stupid. Me’urra scolded himself silently behind a schooled calm face.

Avalanche smiled. Good there was hope. One needed that fire to survive adversity. He had thought Me'urra had it somewhere. He was so glad he could "nudge" it out of him. "Cardinal, Tiburnon, you are dismissed, go find someone else to pester. Tiburnon I'll need you later as for you Cardinal you are free to continue your former duties. Thank you for your service I will be contacting you when another endurance test is needed."

"Very well old chap, come Cardinal, let us discuss feminine bangals further and perhaps get some "feminine" for ourselves eh?" Tiburnon waggled his eyebrows.
