"Very good!" Shina said. "I've only got a few more questions. Assistants at my gym have their basic needs covered as their base salary, but you will only earn money by fighting battles. If you don't fight battles, you won't earn any money. There may be times when there are days, weeks, or possibly even months between challengers, when you will not be fighting battles and will therefore not be earning money. Is this something you are willing to accept?"

Lyle had to stop and think about this one. But not because he had to decide if that was ok with him; he wanted to make sure he understood the question. "Basic needs are stuff like food and clothing, right? And whatever my pokemon need, the form said that." Sure that he got the question now, he nodded and continued. "Yeah, that's fine. That's all I need, and if you feed my pokemon, that means I could have more. I'd never be able to have any more at home." He beamed at the thought of being able to have a bunch of pokemon. Once he caught them, anyway. "Does that mean you'd give me more pokeballs, so I'd be able to catch more?"

"Yes, basic need are things like food, clothing, and shelter. You will also have access to miscellaneous supplies like paper and pens, soap, towels, washing machines and other things you would need. And your pokemon will receive whatever it needs to be at its best. For your Sableye, I'd make sure it had gems in its regular diet, for example. As for Pokeballs, I hadn't listed that as something I would provide, but it seem like a reasonable request," Shina said.
Shina looked at Lyle with a serious expression. "Now, gym leaders, as you might know, have a responsibility to look after the town they live in. While the day-to-day running of the town isn't the concern of the gym, the gym leader and their assistants may be called upon to help subdue aggressive pokemon that may be causing problems, provide assistance if a natural disaster occurs, or to take action if a criminal group like Team Rocket starts trouble. This isn't just a theoretical responsibility. Motterossa was in fact taken over by Team Rocket a while ago, back before I became gym leader, though they have since been driven out as far as we can tell. Are you willing to take on this responsibility to help protect Motterossa if you become an assistant?"

Lyle couldn't help smiling at the list of things assistants would get. Gems for Spinel? He wouldn't need the pills from the Pokemon Center any more! And pokeballs, so he could catch new pokemon! She was really nice, so provide so much for her assistants.
At her next question, he immediately opened his mouth to respond. He was about ready to agree to anything to get this job. But he stopped and closed his mouth before he said a word. It was a job, Mom had told him; just like she jobs that she and his older siblings went to. And she said he had to be sure he could do everything the job needed. He could battle as much as the Gym Leader needed, that was no problem, and if he needed to help out with chores or whatever like he did at home, he could do that too. But this other stuff, fighting dangerous wild pokemon or stopping criminals like Team Rocket, that wasn't something he'd expected.
Could he do that? He'd fought wild pokemon, sure, but they were small things. If it was something big like, like...an angry Charizard, or a, a, a Tyranitar or something, could he face that? If it wasn't on the battlefield with a trainer behind it, anyway. In a battle he could sure try! Or at least his pokemon could, Spinel and any other pokemon he got.
His pokemon...they would be doing the hard stuff a lot of the time, he had to be strong and take care of him. He was pretty sure he could do whatever he needed to to take care of them. He'd went and made sure Spinel didn't get in trouble for stealing those jewels, after all. So maybe he could do it?
"I...think I could do that," he said. A bit more confidently, he continued, "I'd sure try, anyway. And I'd have my pokemon to help."

Shina nodded, pleased to see he had thought about it, not just immediately agreed. This boy had passed every criteria she had, and while he seemed a little young and inexperienced, she was certain he would be a good fit. He had energy and enthusiasm, and had demonstrated he knew quite a bit of the sort of things he would need to know to battle effectively, more than Shina had really expected. Shina was nearly finished with her interviews, and still didn't have as many assistants as she would like. She made her decision right then.
"All right then. Last question. When will you be available to make the move to Motterossa, Junior Assistant Lyle?" she asked with a smile, waiting for the implications of that question to hit.

Lyle initially took the question at face value, and tilted his head to one side a bit as he tried to think when he'd be able to move. He didn't think there was anything important going on at school or anything...Then the significance of her last words hit him and his eyes widened.
"You mean I passed? I got it?" he yelped excitedly, sitting bolt upright. He nearly jumped out of his chair and cheered. He did it! He was gonna get to be an assistant and have lots of battles and pokemon and new things and stuff! Wait until he told Mom!
Oh right, Mom. He'd need her permission to leave, right? "I'll have to ask Mom when I can go. But I'm ready to go now!" he told Shina eagerly.

Shina laughed lightly and stood, Yuki in her arms. "Yes, you are hired. I have a few more things to do in town, and then I will be heading back to Motterossa. I'm planning to leave the day after tomorrow, so I can meet you here that morning if you will be ready that soon and would like to travel with me," Shina told Lyle.
While he said he was ready that minute, she knew it would take him at little time to pack and say good-bye. But she imagined that a boy of trainer age, with a pokemon, who had displayed such knowledge and interest in pokemon probably was actually pretty close to ready to leave at any moment, so a day to pack his bags and say good-bye to his school friends was probably enough. If not, she could linger a bit longer, she supposed.

"Yeah! I'll be here!" Lyle told her, hopping to his feet. He wouldn't miss it for anything! Mom was sure to let him go by then, right?
"Come on, Spinel! We have to go tell Mom." He gestured for his pokemon to follow him, and the Sableye hopped down from the table to follow him to the door. Before he left the room, Lyle turned to wave to the Gym Leader. "Bye! I'll see you soon!" Then he was out the door and racing home, his pokemon right beside him.
