They didn't know he'd died though, that's the point. He deceived them into thinking he was alive and was luring them into a trap.

It wasn't Liu Bei's men he was fighting, it was Cao Cao's.

Always remember this: A Noble Phantasm is a Conceptual thing that the Heroic Spirit possesses that is something that was within their life. It could be a Weapon (Alondite/Arondight), a Power of the weapon (Enuma Elish to Ea) or even a concept that comes over the body (Godhand). Or even a powerful skill they perfected in life (Tsubame Gaeshi or No Second Strike) though such are rare, and seem to be related only to Assassins thusfar.
