Melvin was finding an irony in the fact that this girl had come over to cheer him up, yet she didn't seem the blindly optimistic sort to keep up with it. The fact that enough in her life was thick with sorrow and uncertainty only worked against her own efforts, and Melvin tried not to smile at seeing her seem to go more quiet at the state of her life.

"Seems there is a lot they don't mention and keep in the fine print when coming here. That you tie your soul to a monster, become constantly attacked, can make no plans for the long time future, not pass your name on to another or grow a family past the small one you manage with someone you hook up with. Then there are the people you love and those you become close to coming and going. The privacy of a town might be nice despite the scenery, but I'm sure the endless, gloomy fog will help mask the crumbled building. It should nice and quiet all the way out there."

"But it's like you said. It's not safe anywhere. We were all attacked by the fog that the towns would be no different. Hopefully they have a alarm system for oncoming dangers." Or else that little house would be crushed by some Godzilla foot.

Melvin reached over, lifting a corner of the bread up to inspect it, before leaving it be. "Maybe with all those other people you mentioned moving in the town, if they even want to, that will give you some company. That place feels like a ghost town to me, but I'm sure with some paint and a few landscaping, it could be okay. Maybe some steel reinforcements too, just in case." He went back to drinking his water.

Are you....getting some sick kick out of this?

Of course not.

Why do I feel like you are lying?

Now that he was trying to push her buttons, the automatic 'Cass immunity shield' started to toss up it's buffers. Instead of depressing further, she just seemed to baffle at the strange dark places his mind went to as he almost wallowed in the idea of the destruction possible.

"There is an alert system." she noted with a sort of lop-sided smile. "Frankly, it doesn't matter what they decide to do. It isn't like we move out there to play house or something." Lies. They were all lies, to be honest. Of course they were playing house by moving out there. Or maybe they were playing the game that allowed the shared wall with the next room over to not be a problem.

...
...

That was probably it.

"Frankly, if you signed up for the whole 'hero' thing expecting a cake walk, you're an idiot." she added bluntly. "I didn't expect that running away from my life would yield something more convenient, just something more liberating, and I got what I paid for." a small shrug.

"If I didn't like it, I'd go back in my pod and Nicodemus could find himself a new hunter."

"Well there is a sunny option. Fight to the death or sleep in a pod till ...whatever it is that can happen when you're in a pod. I'm sure you have an expiration date at some point in there." It wasn't a magical crisper after all. Right?

He set his glasses up atop his head once more. "Well you certainly make a guy see the silver lining in his situation. I feel loads better." He said, laying the sarcasm on thick. "Your job a Perky Patrol probably doesn't do well when everyone has nothing but bad things to say about this place. In fact, between cleaning up or being beat up, I don't think I've heard too many good things about this place. The word 'hell' has been thrown around a lot." Yup. He was starting to wonder why Cass ever bothered to try and attempt perking anyone up at all. No one had anything good to say.

Cass lifted her brows. "Not my job to find out what makes you happy, Melvin. Just thought if you wanted an ear I'd lend one, but you didn't really seem inclined to talk about much more than the fact you seem to have decided you've made a bad decision to be out here." she shrugged. "But frankly, if you didn't want me around in the first place, you should have just said so instead of trying to test my patience." she leaned her chin into her palm. "Because right now you're sassing a superior and that could get you into trouble, you know. I frankly could give less of a damn about it, but seriously. Throwing niceness back into people's faces isn't going to bode well in the long run. Especially if you want to survive."

It wasn't a threat. Nothing in her tone was a threat, it was simply a matter-of-fact statement punctuated with a small smile. "I don't consider this place a hell at all. It is my sanctuary. But it seems you've just decided to get your knickers in a twist and get out the door on a bad start." she frowned.

"I feel sorry for you."

Now she was really pissing him off, and he went for his glasses only to notice they weren't there. Oh right, on his head. He decided to go forward with the motion and casually just pretend he meant to brush some hair behind his ear. "I guess I just took what this.." He gestured between them with one finger. "...was from the start. I also don't need anyone feeling sorry for me." It was insulting, and he didn't see why anyone would ever say such a thing to anyone else. How, in the whole record of using the line 'I feel sorry for you' ever work to not make someone either pissed off or fill like s**t? It certainly wasn't doing any wonders for him, but maybe she was getting something out of saying it. A fleeting feeling of superiority? That she somehow had the right mindset to be seeing the flaws in him? She did mention rank after all.

"I'm just tired, and that is not from stepping into this place without the right mindset in mind. I don't slack off and I don't play games. I've been sparring and fixing this place and been keeping very active since waking up. If I happen to be down or upset, it's for various other reasons, but saying I didn't jump out of my pod with a big smile and doing a jig seemed a little ridiculous. There is a lot of fine print when being first approached to find out more about shadows, and I did accept that. I'm not looking to go in a pod, and I'm not here to die. I think I'm allowed some time to adjust at the very least, Ms. Norris." His tone was controlled, but he was rather annoyed that she was getting on his case because he wasn't damn perky about all this. There was a LOT to take in, and getting sliced and diced wasn't what NORMAL people get used to, but then again, normal wasn't really common here. EVERYONE was nuts. He felt like the only normal person here at times!

"Well, what you need doesn't stop be from the feeling. But, if this is how you're going out the door with the people who will be stepping in to save you and possibly die for you someday, I have every right to feel that way." she brushed the scar across her forehead. "You don't have to rush adapting, but if you take out your frustrations on other people, it will bite you in the a**."

She moved her chair back, pressing her hands against the table in a gesture to get up. "And I never said you had to jump out of your pod with a giant smile on your face. I'm just saying that you're getting some unfortunate first impressions of a lot of things.

That's all I meant by it. Just seems like I decided to drop by and say hello on a bad day, I guess. Sorry I had to come and ruffle your feathers."

What are you doing? You are making this girl hate you?

She's married so what do I care? It was a mistake that she is my boss. That's probably going to bite me in the a**, but can't go back now. Not about to beg for forgiveness here.

Well can't you be a little big more friendly.

I just got my a** thrown around a training field all day. Friendly got used up hours ago. She came here!

You are SUCH a moron!

He brushed Saliva off, watched as Ms. Norris already made the motion to stand. She was leaving. Fighting for her to sit down and have a decent conversation wasn't in it for him. He hadn't asked for her company.

Then why didn't you tell her to buzz off?

He ignored Saliva again, crossing his arms to make a makeshift pillow atop the table, but not resting his head just yet. "Well then I guess it's good that this went this way. I wouldn't want you or anyone else dying for me. I don't need that sort of guilt." He watched her move. "Sorry you feel sorry. Hope your move goes well." He then went down to rest his head again.

Cass sighed again. "I'm sorry I've forgotten in the time I've been here that not everybody starts off as well adjusted as I did. I hope things look up for you." Cass replied calmly as she pushed the chair back in underneath the table.

"If you ever feel like talking for real, though, I'm in room 115 for now." she noted. "Hope the rest of the day fares better for you." she bid as her final comment before she moved to take her leave. She probably should have taken the sandwich with her, but she really wasn't hungry anymore.
