When he seemed surprised that she had sisters Briella raised an eyebrow. Why wouldn’t she have siblings? Did he think her an only child? That would just be silly. She had many siblings, though she only lived with a few when they went back home to visit their mother Aisha there were hundreds of them. As she waited for his question she wondered what she could ask him. She wanted to know more about how their skin changed. She hadn’t seen it herself, though she had over heard her sisters talk about the shifters changing color. Yes that would be her question.

When he asked where her crystals were she tilted her head. Crystals? And when he got nervous about asking her she laughed. “I have no crystals. None of us do.” she said as she noticed his more then before. She reached out to touch them. “No we have no crystals. Aisha doesn’t make us with any. We have markings you don’t though.” she said pointing to her shoulders, chest and sides. “My turn. How do you change colors? Your eyes and your skin?” she said taking her hand from his crystals finally.

His crystals were along his back and on his hands and knees. Not particularly awkward places, though he was still a bit nervous about the alkidike's fascination with them. Still, he figured getting handled was about a billion times better than getting killed and he wasn't entirely sure she wouldn't do that later. He was a bit of a worrywart (perhaps you hadn't noticed)
"R...Really?" They didn't have crystals. But... Everything did. Now that he was daring to look at her despite his embarassment, he could see Briella's tribal markings. "W... Well... I...if you d...dont mind me s...saying so... You'rs are l...like l...leaves in a s...storm... The sh...sh...shapes. D...dripping..." He fidgeted a bit.
"Th...the drips are the s...spots. Th...th... stripes are th...the leaves..."
His posture slumped, and he shrunk a little.
"M... my skin?" he looked at the hand he was still holding over the fire, pulling it back and looking at the skin for a little bit before looking nervously back at her.
"M... My skin and eyes ch...change color... I can't c...control it. It... It just happens when the s...sun r... rises and when the m... moon rises. E...each day and night..."
He held out the hand (slightly gingerly) again.
"I'm B... Black now and my eyes are light b... because it's day, b... but when the moon rises in a f...few hours, I'll... I'll shift to white with dark eyes.
He frowned, momentarily forgetting that there was a SCARY! ALKIDIKE! right across from him. It was probably his brain defending itself.
"S...someone told me once that we t...turn white because of the m...moon... But wouldnt th...that mean that the s...sun would turn us gold? B... But it turns us black so..." He looked up and shrunk away again, reminded that Briella was there. His mind couldn't fool him today.
"So... So I don't know why b... but... you could see it wh... when e...evening comes... My color change, I m...mean... Not the m...moon you could see the m...moon any night... ex...except when you can't..."
He took a deep breath and swallowed.
In his nervousness, he had forgotten to ask a question.

When he described her markings Briella smiled. Ah yes, she liked this Shifter. It was strange to think that he was so good with words, but at the same time so bad with them. It was amusing really. "Thank you, I've never been complimented on my markings before. Lucky that I am the first alkidike to receive such compliments. Don't want us girls getting jealous." she teased. Sure she was the first alkidike he ever met, but she had a strong feeling that she wouldn't be the last. If only Dya and Maya were the other alkidike's that he met, she knew he would met more.

When he said that he couldn't control his skin and eyes changing she frowned for a millisecond. Her smile was replaced when he said it changed with the moon and the sun rising. It wasn't to long till the moon came to view in the sky. "So I guess you'll have to stick with me till the moon comes out. Because changing colors sounds exciting."

"Well I think you don't turn gold because gold wouldn't suit you." she said nodding. Gold wouldn't a color for a person. Well maybe, but she thought he looked good the colors he was. Well the one color he was at the moment, she hadn't seen the other one yet. "You forgot to ask a question."

"Oh..."
He couldnt' disagree, could he. It looked like he wasn't escaping until at least nightfall.
Or leaving. Escaping implied that he was in some danger.
Okay, he was. A bit.
But she said she wouldn't kill him, right?
Right?
"It... Its not... Really..." Changing colors was just something he did! If she was dissappointed...
Well...
He didn't know, anymore. Maybe she'd just get bored and leave. He decided to be hopeful.
Also, he thought that gold WOULD suit him. Maybe not go so well with his crystals, but it would be pretty. He bet.
But he was too nervous to disagree.
"Oh... oh, uh.... D... Did I?"
Oh gosh, he had forgotten!
Question... Question... What to ask...
"Um... Do your... Y... your..." He gestured with a hand from his head, mimicing her antenna, "D... Do your feelers work?"

Briella smiled widely. She was worried that he would tell her that he wasn't staying with her till the moon came out, but lucky for her he didn't agree. He seemed like he was going to say something else, but then he stopped mid sentence. Must not have been all that important.

She nodded when he asked if he forgot a question. When he gestured towards his head she tilted her head. Oh her antennas! "Work? I don't know exactly what you mean about work?" she smiled. "However they do allow me to feel the vibrations of animals and things around me. It makes it easier when looking or tracking things." She blushed slightly. It was how she had found him originally, but she didn't want to tell him she had been following me. Hopefully he thought she had just fallen out of the tree by mistake.

"There are female Shifters right?" she was pretty sure he had said something about females, or maybe she had heard it from Maya, but she wanted to be sure. It would make sense, her people were all female so maybe there were a species with all males?

"Oh... That s...sounds really neat..." He was tempted to touch them gently, like she had with his stones, but he was too shy to do so.
They had a nice arc to them, forming a bow with her long ears. He unconciously fidgeted with his own ears. Long ears were so pretty! He wished he had them. N...not to be pretty but... Okay maybe.
"Oh! y...yes... Theres... lots of girls. G...girls and boys... Men and women..." He blushed, "L...Lots of everybody..."
And of course at that point he glanced at her more prominent features and looked away just as quickly.
He was a growing, healthy, awkward, heterosexual shifter boy, who was still a bit panicky about the whole encounter, okay?! If thoughts went through his mind at a lightning speed that made him want to squirm in embarassment, that was just what happened!
"uh..."
Question. Yes. Question. He should think of one.
"If... If there really a...are no m...males... How.....?" He tried to find the word, gesturing vaguely, "H...how do you... Have children?"
He was a little afraid to ask that question, honestly. What with his hormones acting up. again.
They were almost as annoying as his stutter... to him, anyway.

Briella nodded as she reached up and touched her antennas. "Yea I guess they are pretty awesome..." she said quietly. She had never imagined not having them, but seeing him without them she wondered what she would do without them. They made things so much easier for her.

Briella nodded. Lots of everyone? She wondered just how many Shifters there were. She didn't want to ask though, maybe he would think she was planning on attacking them with her sisters or something! She was curious however, she had never really ran into any of them before now so she didn't imagine there were to many of them. Then again maybe they just didn't come around where she was.

When he asked about no males she smiled. She wasn't sure if she should tell him about Aisha... Aisha was their mother, their everything. She was perfect and amazing. No one but her sisters, and the few lucky others that were mates of her sisters, had ever seen her. She figured it was okay to tell Biroki about her since she had heard of shifters coming to see her mother before. "Aisha is our mother. When we go to see her for the year we can go as pairs and ask for a child. Most of the times it is two sisters, but sometimes other people come with our sisters and they ask. Aisha takes pieces from each person and creates their child." She wasn't the best at explaining things, but she hoped she did good enough. "If there are males they are halflings, we don't have any males that are full alkidike."

"R-really?"
Alkidikes came from a tree?
That was probably the most peculiar and interesting thing he had ever heard.
"S-so... the t-tree... its..."
He smiled, almost shyly.
"I-its l-like the womb of your k-kind, then? S-so she is s-sort of l-like everyone's mother and... and... s-surrogate?"
He fidgeted a bit.
"I think it... sh-she... is really poetic... A...are all Alkidikes w-warriors?"
It was something he had heard and he had just had an idea that seemed really poetic and beautiful in his head. The thought soothed his anxiety a bit.
"oh!"
He blanched a bit.
"y-you didn't a-ask a question! S-sorry! I sh-shouldn't have..." he said, throwing up his hands and cowering a little.

Yes, Aisha was their mother and their everything. Without her they would never survive. She shivered slightly at the thought of something every happening to Aisha. "Yes you could say that. We just call our mother and our Goddess." When Biroki refered to Aisha as an it her brows furrowed slightly, but he quickly changed it to she and her face was happy once more.

When he asked if all Alkidikes were warriors she thought for a second. It was true that most of them were warriors, but not all of them really. Dya would never be a warrior, and then there were the mystics. There weren't many of them though. When he cowered she put her hand to his shoulder. "Biroki, it's okay. I'm not going to hurt you. And to answer your question no, not all of us are warriors. Though most of us are." the poor boy was so scared of her and she would never cause him harm. Every time he got better he seemed to then get worse. Hopefully before they parted he would be comfortable around her.

Removing her hand she smiled. "Do you guys like climbing?" she said pointing up at the tree branches above them.
PostPosted: Wed Oct 24, 2012 9:01 am

He knew that. Yes he knew that. He did.
He forced himself to calm down. Deep breaths. Calm down.
"Okay..."
He dragged his thoughts back. Most were warriors? The poetry of the world around him, the way everything sometimes seemed to fit together perfectly and beautifully, struck him yet again. He had purposefully summoned that thought back. It made him feel a lot safer. It would have been a lot more poetic if they all were warriors, but he didn't expect the world to be completely perfect. Every leaf on a bush wasn't the same, nor every footstep he took. That was poetry, too. The uniqueness of different steps from the same feet... the way each leaf grew in its own way...
"S-so..." He began, "S-she..." he had seen the look on Briella's face when he had said 'it'. He wasn't doing that again.
"She is y-your mother and n-nurtures you, and you are H-her children and you b-become warriors to protect Her, s-so that she can continue to n-nurture you..."
He swallowed... he was actually getting thirsty, with all of these spikes of panic. He reached for his canteen- damn, it was nearly empty what would he do?1- and gulped what remained.
"I th-think its beautiful..."
He blushed a bit. He was still wary from his last... episode... of fear, and he wasn't sure if he wanted to ask if, since she wasn't going to let him go until nightfall, they could move towards a lake? or a stream?
"Hmmm? Y-yes." he replied somewhat emphatically... and a teeny bit proudly.
"We... We live in the t-trees, so if we d-didn't like climbing we w-wouldn't be in good sh-shape..."
He crossed his feet and laced his fingers- still dark- around his empty canteen, trying to remain as calm as he could. She wasn't going to hurt him. She wasn't going to hurt him. She had said so herself.
"Wh-why? Do Alkidikes like climbing?"

Briella nodded when he referred to Aisha as a She. It was only proper to call her a she, since she was a she after all and not an it. She had never thought about it that way, as her sisters and herself becoming warriors to protect mother Aisha. She wondered if Dya had thought about it that way? Or Maya? She would have to talk to her sisters about it later on. "Yes, each and every one of us would happy die to protect her. As long as on of us lives she will be safe." Briella nodded. "Once a year we go to see her, to praise and thank her. This is when she can also give us children, if we ask and are considered worthy." technically only sisters that left the islands, such as Maya, Dya, Niebet, Kishku and herself, went back since the others lived there all the time, but that was something she didn't feel like explaining that very second.

He looked thirsty, and there wasn't any water in his canteen, she could hear as much. When he said it was beautiful she smiled. Yes she agreed, anything that was involved with Aisha was beautiful.

She nodded. Yes it figured that they would be but she wanted to make sure. "We love it. I race with my older sisters all the time. Maybe we could race sometime?" she said happily. "Biroki, if your thirsty I know a good river near by. I wouldn't mind a drink myself." she said with a smile. He had nothing to fear from her, hopefully he would see that soon enough.
PostPosted: Thu Oct 25, 2012 9:19 pm

"I... yes..." he said, looking at his canteen, "If... If you don't mind..."
He stood up, maybe a bit too abruptly, standing politely and patiently- if still a bit twitchily- waiting for her to lead him to the water.
"W-well, I'm..." he hesitated. "I can c-climb, but I'm not th-that fast. I know f-faster people..."
Well okay, he was pretty quick. But he didn't think he would be particularly good at racing. His main strength was getting where he was going by tree, not going as fast as possible. That was a recipe for falling!
"Worthy? Wh-ahat... Oh... As... Warriors?"
Going back every year to visit their mother and praise her and protect her? That was so... so... He was just filled with awe.
He would love to see it, but he knew he probably wouldn't be able to.
Oh, but it would be so wonderful so see, he bet! Green ladies dancing around a giant tree, chanting... The tree rustling its own song in tune... and giving them children to take care of for the cycle to begin again...
He smiled without realizing it at the image. It was so beautiful, the picture in his mind.
It bothered him, however, that this tree mother might only consider her warrior children worthy! That would make sense, them being mostly warriors protecting her, but it wasn't very nice. Mothers didn't just want their children to rush off and die! What of the others- the mystics Briella had mentioned? What about Alkidikes whose skills lay in things like talking or art?
His mother wouldn't have cared what he ended up doing, so long as he was alive and happy. He thought. He never had a chance to ask her, so young was he when she died...
He went back to the image of Aisha he had constructed in his head, and waited for Briella's answer.

She smiled and stood up as well. "Come on, it's just this way." she said heading off. It was somewhere that she had gone with her sisters more then once and she had noticed it was close while she was stalking Biroki.

When he said he wasn't that fast she rolled his eyes. He seemed like the kind to be modest. She would bet he was extremely fast. "Well then maybe a game of hide and seek? I'm pretty good at that too." She use to play this with Dya and Maya a lot, but since Dya lost her sight it wasn't something they liked to play.

When he said worthy as warriors she shook her head. "No not at all! You don't have to be a warrior to be worthy of a child. You have to have love in your heart, be able to take care and provide for her, and have the kind of qualities that a mother should have to raise her child. It doesn't really matter how well of a warrior you are." She thought of Niebet. Although she didn't like to admit it, Niebet was a wonderful warrior, though she couldn't imagine her as a mother. Then there was Dya, who would never be a warrior but she knew would be a good mother. "I think she might take into consideration how good of a warrior you are, but only because she would want to make sure you can protect the child. But I don't think that would be the most important thing."

As they walked she could feel the river close by, and she was sure the two of them would hear it soon enough. Maybe it wouldn't be fair to play hide and seek with him, since her antennas would allow her to find him up easier then he could find her without any.
PostPosted: Sat Oct 27, 2012 4:50 pm

"I... maybe... I'm... Really b-bad at Hide and Seek"
Well, not entirely true. He had never been found, but that was usually because he would wander off while playing after some gorgeously colored bug he had found. It wasn't that he was impatient, but he didn't see why he had to stay still when something fascinating was clearly happening elsewhere...
"I..." he paused in his speech, taking two steps to every one of Briella's to keep up with her. Walking on the ground was very different, and while he was reasonably fast in the trees, the Alkidike's longer strides were faster down on the ground. "I l-like to play... mandala." he said, shyly. It was his favorite game, actually, but he bet she wouldn't like the stone-game. It wasn't very physical, and Briella seemed like too atheletic a person to want to play a game where you sit down and put stones into little pockets in a board.
"Oh." he thought about Aisha for a moment, slowing down before realizing he was slowing down and jogging a bit to catch up with her. "T-thats... good." he smiled a bit. Aisha seemed like a nice... tree? Person? Tree-goddess? It was hard to imagine an actual goddess. Thinking about metaphysical things was right up his alley, but gods... the idea made his head hurt. The world was amazing enough with or without them.
Whatever she was, she sounded like a good mother. He wished he could meet her.
He was quiet in his thoughts... until the burbling of the water startled him. The river was in sight.
"Oh, i-is that it?" his parched throat told him just how happy he was to see it. He walked over, fast at first then, cautiously looking back to make sure Briella wasn't going to do... something? , he walked a bit slower until he could kneel down and fill his canteen. He splashed some water on his face and drank some. He looked up again.
Well, she hadn't killed him before, and she hadn't killed him now, so she probably wouldn't kill him later. He gave her a small, shy smile and shifted into a sitting position.
"Thank you..." he said, noticably calmer now that he felt absolutely certain he would survive the day.

She shook her head. He didn't seem to be good at anything. As they walked she noticed that his steps weren't as big as hers and tried to slow down for him. She was use to walking with her sisters and they all walked at about the same stride.

"Mandala?" she said tilting her head. She had never heard of the game, and it sounded kind of interesting. "Tell me about that game." she asked. It would be fun for her to have something to bring back and show her sisters. If it was a fun game maybe she could share it with all of them when she went back to see Aisha!

"Yes Aisha is a good and perfect mother. She only gives children to the best of the best. Some people ask for years before they are ready and she gives a child to them." she said nodding. She had heard a rumor that Niebet had been turned down. But she wasn't sure if it was true or not.

Briella nodded when he asked if it was the river and watched him walk to it hurriedly. He had to be super thirsty! She chuckled before standing next to him in the water and cupping some with her hands to drink. "No problem. I was thirsty also." she said smiling. He was much calmer then when she first met him.
