There was no way she was going to do the pole vault. There was no way she was going to do the pole vault. Looking at it objectively, from every angle, with a calm clear head, there was no way she was going to do the pole vault. It was more than undignified, it was ridiculous. Flying though the air like some kind of screaming monkey, who on earth could take a sport like that seriously? There was no way, yet somehow here she was, her fingers firmly fastened onto the pole so tight that her knuckles were turning white.
She knew she was agile. She knew she was light. She knew that there was a possibility to develop catlike reflexes and land miraculously on her feet at the end, just like she knew that she could turn and run and no one would haul her back. Why had she saved cleaning her glasses until after she signed up for this event? The sheet had been blurry, and she could have sworn it had read something like 'Tea Party' on the top. Tea parties were perfectly acceptable. Pole vaulting was ... there was no way she was going to do the pole vault. But her name was called, and her feet slowly and mechanically swung her forwards. In a stadium, no one can hear you scream, right?
Simonides run up and leap was memorable as the first time a knight had attempted to jump not only in a dress, but while modestly holding it down at the same time as she flew through the air. Somehow, the lithe young woman managed to pull this feat off while successfully passing over the bar not once, but three times. And after the initial stumble, there was applause as she passed over bars that were set quite high up indeed! Panting a bit at the end, she stared numbly up at the scoreboard. Third highest so far? Well, that really did say something after all, didn't it? Signing up had been the right thing to do, even if it was by accident. And she could get a nice warm feeling from her final score as she quickly left, never came back ever again, and shoved this memory into the back of her mind and forgot about it forever. Because there was no way she ever did the pole vault.
