He felt bad when she hissed in pain. He'd been trying but it was impossible to do this with no pain. He could give her some morphine via IV, but, then she'd probably go out. He'd ask her if she wanted another dose.

The clatter of something on the table he froze for a second, worry bubbling up. That was no what he'd been expecting. "I see." He was doing with the dabbing, taking odd his gloves, washing his hands putting a new set on, then pulling out the fresh bandages from their case. No cross contamination.

"I'm going to put the new bandage on, so this will hurt to." He gave her a few second before putting it to her back.

"We can talk later if you like. About..that."

Ami nodded, not responding to him. She wasn't crying, there was just ... nothing. No expressions where she should have had frowns. No words where she would have been voicing worries. She didn't know what to do- most hunters didn't break their weapons after all. Most hunters didn't become void. Useless.

Her body at least gave a choked gasp when Marcus pressed the bandages to her back. It wasn't emotional, merely instinctual. She contented herself to just lie there.

What must Marcus have been thinking? She believed him "friend" enough to see her worth as a person, but there was inevitably a sliver of doubt about her hunter capabilities now, right? That was only natural, right? A hunter without a weapon wasn't a hunter. It was a person, and on Deus Ex, those got in the way.

She stayed in silence, taking up Marcus' offer to talk later, only grunting and gasping as he pressed bandages into her backside. It was only when he'd finished that she quietly admitted, "I'm scared." A pause, and then, "If it isn't nightmares ... I ... I'm scared they're going to ..." Another pause as she caught her words. She didn't know WHAT they were going to do. Pods, kill her, lock her away- what did they even do with weaponless hunters? Her hands clenched the pillow she was laying on until they were a stark white next to her pink hands. "What are they going to do with me now?"

Scared. She was- He inhaled, letting it go slowly. She was scared, and it wasn't hard to see why. A useless hunter was a dead hunter. Liabilities were disposed of. If you had a mark- You had one chance, if anything. Ami was probably on her last chance. The broken weapon... he doubted it was missed by the tech team or medics. "Ami, if I may let you on my own secret.." It was a gamble. A high gamble.
"I ******** up Ami. I got a man killed because I made poor decisions, and ended up making a very large mistake. You don't make deals with demons Ami." As much a blatant hint as he was going to give her. "They won't get ride of you. As far as I know, you'll probably be assigned runics for the field. I don't know about broken weapons, but so long as you make yourself useful, they won't want to be rid of you."

Yet anyway.

Ami hadn't turned over to face Marcus- how could she?- but she'd at least released her iron grip on the pillow. So she wasn't the only one who was ********.

Except ... no, there was a difference. "You're a full hunter. You've proved you're loyal and worth keeping," she explained, "So far I've managed to get captured, tortured, and to- to ..." She couldn't say it. A frustrated sigh escaped her mouth and she said, "I don't have the track record to show like you."

She sighed and shook her head. Marcus was admitting something personal to her and she was turning it into her own misery- that wasn't okay. "I'm sorry. Are you okay?" It probably wasn't the right place for a girl with cuts, scrapes, burns and drilled holes in her to be asking if Marcus was okay, but at her core Ami really did care about people who were close to her. A pause, then, "I guess I never realized how disposable we are."

A snort. "Ami, the time I ******** up was on the promotion. I've been in charge of moon trainees and had to deal with them being insubordinate, dumb as ******** little shits. I've been tasked with defense and have been suggested to the sun division, more than once. Everyone had a bad track record Ami, some are just better at hiding it than others."

He was bad at it.

"I'm fine for now, but I am very much aware of my position and what has been taken from me and denied to me. Miss Carr gave me more leeway than was needed, and I think she only did it out of rational that we need moon hunters. There are only a handful of us left, and if she can use me, she will. From what I've seen of her, that's the type of woman she is." A shrug as he got down to eye level with her. "You're loyal Ami, dedicated to your work to an unhealthy way. Being disposable is a part of being a hunter. That's why we push ourselves. To be valuable enough to not be disposed of. Right now, if you weren't valuable, H wouldn't have kept you around."

Ami turned over, not to face Marcus, but because her burns weren't beginning to ache the longer she sat. Marcus was talking about his promotion mission, and honestly Ami couldn't catch most of it. Who was Miss Carr? Something about switching to the sun division? The gears worked in her mind to put together a hazy picture, but the mosaic of details wasn't complete and it irritated her. Ami needed details.

It didn't particularly matter. If Marcus talked, it kept her mind off Junpei.

She was going to let him just talk and talk, but he leveled himself with her, eyes staring into hers as he talked. Then he started talking about her value, and her worth.

A groan left her mouth and she sluggishly shoved a pillow in his face. Not even enough to knock the person backwards. "I hate it when you do that," she croaked, giving him a frown. "They should get rid of you already." A JOKE? FROM AMI? Couldn't be.

Being drugged was a wonderful thing in Marcus’s opinion. He was half betting Ami wasn’t going to remember half the things he was telling her, and with her rather passive self, she wasn’t one to hunt him down to demand answers. A win on all accounts. Marcus might be talkative, but he had his limits.

A pillow to the face, the moon hunter snorted. Childish from someone older than him. Yet the resident ‘child’ was more mature than his own division assistant. “You don’t hate me. If you did, you wouldn’t talk to me or listen to me half as much as you do.” He sighed, looking at the morphine drip. “I’ll replace this, let you get some rest and ignore the pain.” He tucked the pillow from his face to her side. “And if they get rid of me in moon just think, they might shove me into life for medical.”

"And I shall hurriedly whisper to every individual I know, He's the man they moved to life," she said dutifully, sarcasm dripping off her voice, "And you will woefully become talk of the town. How sad, my dear Marcus- demoted to man with problems."

She rested her head against one pillow and wrapped an arm around the pillow Marcus had placed next to her side. At the mention of morphine, she nodded and sighed, depression sitting back in. "That'd be nice."

He chuckled, “And when I reach out and scream save me, will you whisper no? I think if I was forced to transfer, it wouldn’t be big news. Maybe for a few days, but everyone has bigger problems on their hands than thinking and who got promoted or demoted. But if I got a transfer, I’d be a senior again, how fun.” He knew it wouldn’t be. Because they both knew what he’d end up doing. Needling her to go to her dorms and sleep more often than he already was.

Setting up the morphine drip, Marcus went over the clip board, making a few notes. “I’ll check on the others. Get some sleep Ami. If you want me to bring you anything, you’ve got my number.” He hesitated as he moved away. “You’ll make it past this Ami. You faced the end of the world once already, and what happened… isn’t going to be the end for you.” So he hoped.
