Riley's fingers curled around to take a firm hold, and she let him lead her out to his destination. Her expression turned wry at the question, but she let him explain it before answering.
I am aware of the Trick-or-Treaters. They are an integral part of our society. For now. She flickered her gaze at him, her eyes glittering mischievously. Though I have a deep appreciation for the chaos they cause, I am not necessarily a fan. They would make excellent judges, though. I look forward to the spectacle. You said this was a battle?

"Not a serious one," he admitted. "This is more for fun. We're going to pair off three person bands to battle it out with their instruments, while the rest of us hang out in the stands or at the booths outside. It'll be... kinda like a massive party! Which is a hell of a lot more fun than gettin' tossed into the school field trips."
He led her to the Old Crypt, pulling to a stop in front of the stage. "This is where the judges will be, I got Desu, Rage and Nox, which means tables, birds and fire can be lobbed at people at any time. Once we get through the tryouts we head for the stadiums, where they battle it out properly. I think it'll be fun... y'know, if the fliers I put out actually get noticed."

Riley's head craned up when they reached the stage, squinting to get a good look at the setup. So students are going to willingly get up on stage, in front of the Trick or Treaters, and subject themselves to attack while preparing to attack each other. With instruments.
Riley looked positively gleeful. Save me a seat. I have to see this.

He grinned, evilly. "Not just ANY trick or treaters," he told her. "The trick or treaters that are most likely to throw the good stuff! We're talkin' tables, glitter bombs, rotten eggs, fireballs--it'll be beautiful," he agreed. "And tryouts start on the twentieth, so show up and you can pick one of the choicest seats in the house!"
Then he tugged her to the stage, leading her to the stairs at the side. "C'mon, this is as good a place t'talk as any," he told her as he went up the stairs. "Have they told you about the ghouls and guys that were taken by hunters yet?"

Riley's eyes lifted happily as he tugged her onto the stage, and she followed, lifting her long skirt with one hand and taking the steps carefully. No, they have not. I suppose that is because, if someone were to name the students involved, there is a good chance I would not recognize the names. Once she was on the stage, she let the skirt fall, and surveyed the view from there. Who has gone missing? Her attention returned to Roch, and she squeezed his hand. Have you lost someone close to you?

"They went missing--we went in after them," he said, dropping down onto the stage. "You don't remember much about the hunters, I'm betting. But has anyone told you about them?" he asked. "Because as long as you're in this school, you should know as much about them as you can. They ain't a scareling tale," he said.
"They took my ghoulfriend and inserted this... tracker thing in her. They turn other students into weapons to use against us. They killed off or made weapons of an entire class in the past--including my uncle. And I probably should be thinkin' revenge, but all I wanna do is graduate. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't be careful."

Malodore has taken up the burden of keeping me up to speed on what new information we have on our enemy. It has been very forthcoming. The specific knowledge that Roch had to offer disturbed her, however. Tell me more about this tracker you mentioned. Has it been removed yet? And is your ghoulfriend well?

"No, it hasn't been--I'm not sure if it can be. And she's lost her voice, she can't speak, can't even laugh. We're tryin' to deal with it, but you know how the adults are--well, maybe you don't. They either ignore the situation, or they don't believe us, most of the time."
He was silent. "I seriously thought you were dead," he said quietly. "Maybe... how did they bring you back?" he asked.

It was at his last words that Riley finally turned her full attention back to the boil, and her expression fell in something akin to sympathy. She set both of her hands on his shoulders, and her head slowly shook.
Do not ask that question. You would not wish it on your greatest enemy, let alone the one you care for. The bogeys are not to be looked for in dire need such as this. We must find our strength, and our answers, from within.
She looked to the side, and her brow furrowed in thought. She has lost her voice, but she has communicated with you in other ways, I hope? Where, exactly, is the tracker?

He winced, reading a lot into that statement. "Yeah, I was afraid you'd say that," he said quietly. "And the tracker... as far as I can tell, it's inside her--not sure where, she hasn't told me, but I figure it's pretty deep."
He sighed, leaning back and staring at the stage. "Now's probably not the time t'be throwin' a party like this--but I promised I would. Plus, y'know, its my first official job for my mentorin'. And maybe everyone needs this. A break. A chance to get their minds offa things."

No. She shook her head again, but this time, the light returned to her eyes. Now is exactly the right time to be hosting an event like this. Believe me, it will do her, and everyone else, a world of good to enjoy something for once. Worry over the idea of a tracker inside of the ghoul was bothering her, and the worry etched on her features. I wish there was a way to know exactly where the tracker was. She is a danger to herself, and those around her, harboring a device such as that. If it was in her brain, I could help. Other than that, however.. I'm afraid I'm at a loss. If we had a professional doctor - I would suggest Malodore, but I am to understand it is just a student right now, and such a delicate situation may require a professional.
It was a noticeable difference, in her - the fact that she did not automatically offer Malodore's skills. She was unaware that it had been tested, time again, and knew so little of how far it had come, after all.

He was silent for a moment before he admitted something he hadn't even told Amphi. "I went to the priestess ghoul for the horsemen," he said quietly. "I asked her if she could do it--she's the strongest person around that I know of, with magic and stuff. But she's only out to get us to do things for her--she won't even take this jackin' swirly off my shoulder until I've 'paid her back' somehow. She's a no-go. And I don't think Cricket can help, either. The best thing I can do right now is..."
He ran a hand over his face, letting out a heavy sigh. "I don't even know. Keep her from situations where we're fighting the hunters. Hell, I'm graduated, practically, there's no reason I should be jumpin' to the front of the line to fight, anyway."

Swirly off your shoulder.
Riley did not admit that she stopped listening to Roch the moment he'd said those words. She did wait until he'd finished speaking, before her hands shot out, settling on his shoulder once more. This time, she turned him around, and tugged at his vest until she could see what he was talking about. Her color paled visibly when she laid eyes on it, and her fingers released him as she took a step back.
This Medea. Malodore's told me about her, but I assumed she was one of the horsemen, not a demon. She says you must pay her back? What is a horseman doing, making contracts? And how did you come to agree upon the contract to begin with?
Riley was shaken. She knew how to fight an enemy when it was clear who the enemy was. But now, the lines had become more muddled than she could see through. Everything was clouded in deception and betrayal.

"I ain't sure it's a contract, exactly," Roch said, frowning. "I've never been in a contract, so I ain't sure, but this is more of a... brand. Like on a shoe or a t-shirt," he said, sounding a bit disgusted as he looked at his shoulder.
"I don't feel any need'ta do things for them or anythin, hell, I'm thinkin' of tattooin' over it--but this is what we got in exchange for them helpin' us into the hunter's territory. I mighta helped take down one of their toughest guys and kill another, but they still say I owe them. Screw that," he said. "I ain't a demon's tool and I sure as hell ain't a horseman's. No offense," he added, looking her in the eyes. "But I choose what I offer t'repay my debts an' do it of my own free will. Tryin' t'blackmail me with a symbol on my shoulder--"
He snorted, turning and showing her the massive tatt that covered his upper right arm. "I tatt over that, I'll be balanced out," he said with a shrug.

Roch didn't seem to understand that what he was describing was exactly a contract, but she didn't want to push him. To know he'd been put under Medea would.. give him more to worry about than he already had. The boil needed to focus on Amphi, for now.
She put her hand on his arm, and squeezed it gently. I should head back. But I'm going to speak to this Medea.. I don't like that she's placing her mark on my friends.
She had a lot to talk with Medea about.
