Being a dancer, Paris had a thing for tights. He couldn’t even remember a time in which he hadn’t worn them at least three days a week. He wore them to dance, he wore them outside of dance, he wore them with dresses, skirts, and shorts. Sometimes in the winter he even wore them under pants for a little added warmth. Tights were versatile. They came in all shades and colors and patterns. They made a statement.

And they brought attention to his legs which, frankly, were rather nice to look at if he had anything to say about it.

And he did.

Frequently.

“Flower patterns are so hot these days,” he commented, riffling through a display of similarly styled tights. “Oooh, and lace, too. How do you feel about lace? You have some on your… um… night attire,” he said instead of mentioning the word “fuku” in a relatively crowded public place. “And if you’re feeling especially daring there’s the suspender tights. I don’t know how they’d look with the Crystal skirt, though. But there’s these diamond patterned ones, too. That’d add a little flavor to it. Oooo, they have shoes…”

The thing about shopping with Paris was that it was very easy for him to be distracted. Shiny things like jewelry didn’t usually attract his attention unless someone pointed it out to him, but tights and cute tops and trendy shoes usually had him flitting from one rack or display to another in quick succession. He was very adamant in his insistence that he was not a label whore, but he couldn’t always resist the call of fine shoes and designer handbags.

“Do you need any shoes?” he asked, as if he really needed an excuse to meander over there. “I just bought these boots, but I figure there’s no harm in looking. Wow, a lot of these are on clearance!”

Penelope considered Paris's advice, chewing on her lip thoughtfully as she looked at all the tights. Flower patterns? Well... she did like florals, but nothing too much... maybe those with the delicate blue flowers? She pulled them down, along with some subtle lace patterns in cream and pale pink. It felt a little odd to be picking up anything that linked with her Senshi life, but... she did like lace. It was pretty and classic. Suspender tights were right out, and she was beginning to look at the bolder, diamond patterns whenever her friend asked her about shoes.

"Oh, I... well, I have my school shoes," she replied, heading over to look at the clearance racks with him. There was, certainly, nothing wrong with looking, although she wasn't a fan of shoe shopping in general. Sometimes the heels were too big, or the best pair just wasn't in her size, and it could get so incredibly frustrating--not to mention expensive! But Paris seemed so excited, and so she peered at a few pairs. "But... if there's a good pair for the right price, I can always use a pair of nice shoes for parties and such." Never mind that most of the 'parties' she went to were really more family gatherings.

“Every girl should have a nice pair of heels, a nice pair of flats, and a nice pair of boots,” Paris said as he circled around the clearance rack to find the collection of shoes in his size.

He didn’t know if that was a real rule of fashion or not. He didn’t usually stick to rules anyway unless they seemed fairly important; some of them he ended up just throwing out the window due to the sheer inanity of them, but he also didn’t think there was anything wrong in indulging in shoes when one had the means to do so (just as long as that wasn’t all they spent their money on). Shoes were like tights in their ability to make a statement, and it was always a good idea to have a few pairs in different styles, in his opinion. You never know when an occasion might arise in which they were needed!

“Ooo, these are cute,” he observed, rifling through boxes. “Oh, so are these. I’m going to kill myself later if I walk out of here with a big bag full of shoes, but maybe if I just get one or two pairs… Are there any you like? There’s nothing wrong with splurging everyone once in a while, you know. You never know when a hot date with a handsome guy might come along…”

He paused to consider that comment before he amended, “or girl, really, or whatever strikes your fancy. Clearly I don’t judge. These are really cute. Not my size, though,” he chattered on, moving quickly from one topic to the next as he continued his perusal through the clearance display, coming across a pair of fun burgundy suede sandals. “What do you think?” he asked.

Penelope frowned in thought. She had a pair of heels and a pair of flats--although she couldn't comment about how "nice" they were, in comparison to the many, many nice shoes through which she and her friend were looking. Boots, though? "Do snow boots count? I have a nice, warm set of snow boots." Fashionista, the Crystal Academy girl was not.

The black-haired girl colored more than usual at the prospect of dating, and she couldn't even meet Paris's eyes as she stuttered, "Well, I... I mean, I don't... um, I've never gone on a date, so I don't know if I'd ever need anything for that." It wasn't the act of not having a boyfriend or girlfriend that embarassed her, but dating was just a part of life that the reserved girl had never experienced. No one seemed interested, and why should they be? There were tons of other girls, and boys, with which she had to compete for attention. On some level, she just knew she couldn't. She sort of shuffled her feet in place as she once again turned her attention to the shoes, running her hand over the pairs and desperately hoping that the conversation went somewhere else.

Penelope looked at the shows Paris asked her opinion on, and her eyes widened. They were, truly, lovely shoes. She had never seen a pair more detailed , and while the heels were much higher than she would normally wear... well, her night tiime duties of running and fighting in heeled boots had begun to allow her to balance a bit better on them. "Oh, they're gorgeous, Paris. They'd look wonderful on you."

“Snow boots are functional,” Paris allowed. “I wouldn’t wear them on a regular basis, though, obviously.”

He had to admit, he was tempted to continue on with the topic of dating. He could be nosy and a bit intrusive when it came to his friends. He liked knowing what they were up to. He liked knowing who they were seeing—or not seeing—what they liked to do, where they liked to go, what their tastes were, not because he liked to spread the information around like a shameless gossip, but because he liked to help.

Dating was a difficult subject, though, and not one he could really claim to be any sort of authority on. He hadn’t really dated before he’d met Chris. He’d gone out with people and had a good time and did some pretty serious things that, to him, hadn’t seemed like such a big deal at the time. It was different now, but as he and Penelope were very different people Paris didn’t think he was the right person to be telling her how she should go about finding someone or what she should do differently in order to attract attention. She shouldn’t have to do anything differently, not unless she wanted to attract the wrong sort of attention, and that wasn’t something Paris wanted for his friend.

Maybe being with Chris was turning him into a huge sap, but he happened to think it wasn’t really worth dating unless you found someone who liked you for you.

“It’s nothing to be embarrassed about,” Paris said, noting the color in her face. “Nothing to be ashamed of either. Dating isn’t everything. Maybe you’d rather focus on other things instead,” he hazarded a guess, “or maybe there just hasn’t been anyone who’s caught your attention the way they should. You shouldn’t have to force it. There’s a right time and a wrong time to give it a try. You’ll know when the right time and who the right person is when they come along.”

He could say that confidently enough, showing Penelope a reassuring smile as he did so, some of his former excitement dampening for a moment as he treated the subject with the seriousness it deserved. Some people just weren’t as comfortable as others when it came to putting themselves out there, and that was alright.

“You should try these on if they fit,” he said, motioning to the shoes they were in the middle of viewing. “They’re not my size anyway, but they’re totally cute. I want to see what they look like. They’d look nice with your eyes… which isn’t something you usually look for in shoes, but they could really pop with the right outfit. Bring it all together.”

"It's not... I'm not really embarassed about not being with someone as much as it seems like... you know, with everything we're involved with It just hasn't been something that seemed... important," Penelope muttered, brushing her hair behind her ears. Paris was a lot easier to talk to about this topic than her mother, really. Lois Seneca seemed convinced that she wasn't trying hard enough and in her own not-so-subtle way mentioned the names of several nice young men who would be willing to ask her out if she wanted. The reserved girl just wasn't sure she did want to. It would seem too much like she was imposing on her mom's friends. The girl had had troubles making friends, and those relationships were what was important to her. How much harder, and more important, would a romantic relationship seem? No, no, never goign to happen so no reason to think about it.

She eyed the sandals when her friend offered them, prepared to refuse the offer because they wouldn't suit her but... well? The shoes were in her size, and they were very pretty. It couldn't hurt to put them on--there was no commitment to buy them, if she didn't like them. Not to mention it got them away from this awkward conversation. "Well... okay." Penelope took off her own white shoes and tried to put on one of the elegant sandals. The heel was too high for that, however, so she went over to one of the small benches offered for this purpose. It took her a couple of tries to lace them properly, but eventually she was finished. It took her a little while longer to get up on them properly--even her Senshi heels weren't this high.

She took a few, teetering steps towards Paris, asking, "Well... what do you think? I wouldn't wear them with these socks, of course, but... they fit?"

Paris could sort of understand how dating might not seem all that important in the grand scheme of things, given what they went out and did nearly every night and how many times they’d faced the prospect of death in just the last year alone. In a lot of ways he agreed with Penelope; he’d certainly had similar thoughts at one point—a long time ago, it seemed to him now. They were young and they were involved in something that could very well see them dead tomorrow. Facing that, “normal” things like dating could seem rather trivial.

At the same time, he didn’t know where he’d be right now, what he’d be doing with himself, or even who he’d be as a person if he hadn’t given Chris a chance. Chris had made him feel as normal as it was possible for him to feel in the beginning of it all, and discovering that Chris was involved in the war, too, had helped to keep him grounded. He supposed there were benefits and drawbacks on both sides of the argument. The most important thing was for each of them to be happy and comfortable where they were in their lives.

Paris let the subject go, as he wasn’t getting the sort of vibes that told him Penelope was all that interested in finishing that part of the conversation. Instead, he waited patiently for her to try the shoes on and gave an approving nod once she’d done so.

“They look nice. You might want to practice walking in them a bit, though,” he said with a laugh. “But that’s not too hard. A little to get used to if you don’t wear heels like that all that often. They’re not too uncomfortable, are they? I like the color. You could probably pair those with a lot, actually. And they’re not too expensive either. Probably a couple of seasons old, but any snob who really cares to make an issue about that could probably do with a good slap in the face,” he joked.

The girl couldn't help but smile, even if the joke seemed a bit at her expense. She really liked the shoes, but taking a look at the price tag for the first time made that smile fade. Seventy-five dollars?! That was almost as much as an entire Crystal Academy uniform! That was three months of book spending money! For the quality of the shoes, it was a fair price, but... still so much.

Penelope chewed her lip and looked down at them sadly. She did have the money she could spend, sure, but all one one pair of shoes? No matter how nice? It seemed... so frivilous. They were too nice for anything she could ever, really, be expected to go to... minus, maybe, prom or her graduation. She sadly placed them carefully back in the box and reached for her own shoes. "There are nice, but... even as clearanced as they are, it's still a big investment. I don't know, Paris..."

“It’s alright to splurge sometimes and treat yourself to something you like,” Paris said.

Not that he didn’t understand the hesitance that often came with purchasing something so expensive, especially something that wasn’t even a necessity. He wasn’t entirely immune to buyer’s remorse, though he was usually able to justify his purchases somehow. He satisfied himself with the knowledge that he worked hard for it, that the money he spent now was his own, and he told himself sometimes he deserved a little gift in self-love.

“You don’t have to get them if you don’t want,” he allowed, “but if you like them, if they make you feel good when you wear them, then you should at least consider it. Even if you don’t get to wear them all that often, everyone should have clothes and shoes that make them feel good about themselves. You can always think about it for a while. Personally, I think you should get them. I don’t mind chipping in if price is an issue. I’ve got plenty saved up.”

"Oh, oh no, I couldn't ask you to do that," Penelope protested, looking down at the shoes in the box. She really did like them. She appreciated her friend's offer, but she had the money herself. (Even if she hadn't, she would never have let Paris give her any significant amount of money. That would be too rude!) She rarely, if ever, bought anything truly expensive in terms of clothing, as fastidious as she was about her appearance.

Paris wouldn't steer her wrong, on the battlefield or in the war of fashion. If he thought she could learn to walk in them, if he thought she looked good in them? Well, those votes of confidence meant much more than even her own love of the shoes--which was not small by any means. Finally, she gave in. "Well... okay. So I'll get these five pairs of tights and the shoes. Thanks to you I'll have lots to show off to Momma when I get back." The thanks were genuine, not blaming, and she smiled to show her gratitude.

"And as soon as we're done checking out here, we'll go take a look at the computers." The girl's voice, although soft, would brook no argument as she headed for the register. Clothes shopping, especially with friends, was all well and good, but the necessities HAD to be attended to.

“Guilty as charged,” Paris joked, smiling in return.

He certainly wouldn’t have minded chipping in if it came down to that. He’d managed to save up quite a bit of money while dancing professionally over the last year, and with a boyfriend who liked to pay for everything himself instead of letting Paris handle it, sometimes it was nice to be able to treat his friends on his own. He liked getting gifts for people about as much as he liked getting gifts from people.

But he didn’t argue since Penelope seemed intent on purchasing the shoes herself. Following her to the register, Paris grabbed a few pairs of tights for himself along the way, having forgotten to in his momentary shoe distraction.

“Alright, alright, we’ll go look at computers,” he agreed, with just the barest hint of a whine in his voice. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to get the necessities—that was part of the reason they were here—but things like shoes and clothes were always much more fun than trying to figure out exactly what he was going to need for all of his classes.

“But after that we’re going to stop for something to eat,” he announced. “My treat.”
