Considering his advice and their position, Bismuthite expected the strike and flip and did what he could to move with it in a way that would both minimize the harm he took, and allow her maneuver. He kept reminding himself this was training, and to set pride aside. Being humble was hard, and thus his praise was hard won. He knew the value of receiving it though.
"Good," he said while also taking whatever strike followed, gritting his teeth. It was his pride that always took the real beating when it came to training...
"Let such actions become second nature. Think fast-"
Bismuthite used the elbow of his captured arm to attack Kyanite.
"Improv is good to learn too."

A pinprick of hope blossomed in her chest at the small compliment from the captain. Kyanite had only known failure in the Negaverse so far. This tiny tendril of approval was enough to sustain her for the next few group sessions, at the very least. Sometimes when she saw the captains and generals in the hallway, she doubted that she would ever be like them -- strong, battle-hardened. At the very least, Lt. Kyanite was just aiming to stay alive.
In her moment of wandering thoughts, Kyanite missed Bismuthite's next move and took his elbow harm to the stomach. She kept her grip for a moment, long enough to shove him backward, but released him, backtracking several steps herself.
The second she had her footing, the dark-haired lieutenant propelled herself into the air, aiming a flying roundhouse kick at the officer who was being so kind as to spar with her. She only hoped that it would be a move deemed... well, anything other than terrible would be an excellent change of pace.

Finally she took some initiative to attack back without prompting or direction... Bismuthite counted this as a success.
Given the added speed the captain had over the lieutenant, the kick was easily evaded, but still, he decided that things needed to end on a good point so that hopefully Kyanite would have some measure of morale boost in herself, and would keep up the effort next time.
"Good, you finally attacked on your own. I've got some things to do, so I'm going to have to bid you farewell for now. Keep up the effort, and remember what you've learned. Work on it, and soon you won't need any one to come save you."

Her heeled boots clicked against the ground as Kyanite missed her strike. She had just backed up to anticipate his response when Bismuthite ended the sparring session. "I will," she said, nodding an affirmation. "Thank you." Was that the proper response to training? She probably should have said something tougher, or maybe just given a steely-eyed salute. Oh well, it was too late now.
With an awkward wave and bob of her head, Lt. Kyanite exited the training room, prickled with sweat and bruised from her falls, and curtailed it back to Earth. If she stayed in Negaspace any longer, someone else might want to spare, and what she needed right then was just some normal teenager time. Saving the world could wait until she had a nap.
