"And you have no idea how short-sighted you are." At the accusations against his bravery with his weapon, he placed a hand on the hilt and drew the weapon, presenting the blade. His stance was not one of someone who was merely demonstrating an ability to wield a sword; it was an invitation for Asch to draw his own. Similarly, there was no fear in his eyes but rather anger, frustration, and a cold cynicism that acknowledged and accepted that either of them could be hurt as long as that metal was free of its sheath. "Don't compare me to how I was."

Dammit to hell FINALLY. Asch was wondering when he'd actually get the guts to draw his sword. That look on his twin's face was unmistakable though, and that's just what he had wanted to see. If Luke was serious about what he said, then he needed to back it up. Asch wouldn't accept anything less.

Green eyes narrowed coolly and he too withdrew his sword, pointing the blade in his brother's direction. While outside the storm continued to rage.

"Then prove that I'm wrong."

Gladly.

He advanced at a pace that steadily gained momentum, closing the distance between himself and his opponent and driving his steel against Asch's. He fully intended to fight with all his strength.

Asch readied himself and was able to easily block Luke's initial attack. The sound of ringing metal echoing through the ancient building as thunder still rumbled above them.

He didn't expect much out of his brother, since the last time they had fought, Asch had thoroughly trounced him. Not to mention the idiot had lost his wits when he had killed some worthless gang leader. Thus Asch used his blade to push Luke's back to take several swings at him.

Luke wouldn't be deterred so easily. His previous defeat to Asch was what had inspired him to begin practicing more seriously in the first place, and though his nerve had faltered, his body had not forgotten the movements. He escaped the reach of the counterattack, raising his blade to stop Asch's sword with his own and return the attack. If Asch was expecting the same level of skill Luke had commanded the last time they'd faced each other in direct combat, then he was in for a surprise.

He was in for a surprise, and as Luke counter attacked, Asch was able to parry, but... He found himself being driven back a couple of steps. The dreck's strength had indeed improved. Plus he was also able to notice the more refined stances and form.

"You've been practicing," he said while taking another step back due to one of Luke's blows against his sword.

Well then. Seems that it had not all been for waste after all.

"Of course." Who wouldn't practice after failing at the skill on which they prided themselves the most? He seized the momentum he had and continued to drive his assault. His breath was already coming heavier, but he refused to lose to his stamina; he instead doubled his efforts in compensation.

Asch clenched his teeth and did his best to hold his own. He continually blocked Luke's vicious attacks, and his own attempts were blocked as well. There was little room in this place for a proper fight. The pews made is narrow and as his brother double his efforts, Asch found himself frustrated and struggling, being driven back towards the pulpit.

Perhaps Arcadie had been wrong. His brother seemed to be doing just fine... there had been nothing to worry about after all. In fact, Asch had been unprepared for this. He had underestimated him, and now he couldn't find an opening in which to attack back.

Luke was determined not to lose his early lead, and he offered no opening in his movements. He hadn't felt any overwhelming desire to prove himself - nor indeed any desire to interact with Asch at all - but now that it had come down to it, he wasn't going to be satisfied with anything less than his brother's acknowledgement. This had gone on long enough.

Seizing the moment, he drove forward once more, parrying with a twisting movement that pulled the enemy sword from its opponent's grasp, tossing it aside. He followed up with a halting gesture, holding his blade parallel to the ground against Asch to prevent him from retrieving the weapon. Though his breathing was effortful and his grip unstable, his features betrayed no indication that he was ready to stand down. He awaited his brother's response.

Asch was shocked when he felt the heavy blow that freed his sword from his grip. As the blade clattered to the ground, he simply stood there for a moment in stunned silence. However, he didn't even attempt to pick up his sword. He had lost fair and square.

"Tch," was all he could say. Yet there was a new found respect for his brother in his eyes.

To think that he'd lost to his own little idiot brother. It was humiliating and yet... satisfying at the same time.

Luke recognized the resignation in his brother's stance as well as the suggestion of acknowledgment in his eyes. That was fine. That was all he really needed. He lowered his weapon and returned it to its scabbard, moving to return to where he had left his jacket. He saw no need to gloat nor demand penance in any way; he was satisfied with his results and there was nothing that needed to be said about it.

He didn't progress very far before staggering, catching himself and leaning heavily against one of the pews. Well damn, he should have seen this coming.

A wordless understanding was better for the both of them, and Asch was fine with Luke not saying anything. Once his brother lowered his weapon, Asch moved to pick up his sword and replace it in it's sheath. Before... he probably would have taken this loss much harder, but things had changed.

Asch turns his eyes back towards Luke just in time to see him stagger. Furrowing his brows in a deep frown, he moved towards Luke wordlessly.

There was a wave of nausea that briefly whited out his vision, and he found it wise to maneuver himself into a seat. He compressed his posture slightly, leaning forward with his elbows against his knees and his forehead against his palm and exhaling in ragged breaths. He was used to feeling varying degrees of tired or sore, even more so after exerting himself, but it seemed he'd gone a little overboard. Worth it? Almost definitely, as much as he hated that awful ill feeling.

Asch came over and stood over Luke as his brother sat and bent over. All he could do for several moments was stand there and scowl at the scene before him. This... was not good. Dammit. Looks like his fears might be realized after all.

Luke would then feel a hand on his shoulder.

"I -told- you not to over do it. You'll only hurt yourself, idiot."

Words that he'd given Luke the last time they had fought. And yes, again with the name calling, but there wasn't that same edge to it as before.

He lifted his head slightly and inclined a sidelong glance in his brother's direction. What was with this guy? Shouting and taunting at him one minute only to express some kind of concern or - Arceus forbid - empathy? It wasn't really an unwelcome change in his demeanor, though, unexpected though it was.

He exhaled a short breath, closing his eyes and giving a faint smile at the thought of his standoffish brother actually demonstrating normal human emotions. "Should have figured that out by now, huh?" he said. "I'll be fine in a minute." He just hoped it wasn't too long a minute.
