Her ears, cheeks and eyes were burning with frustration and there would have been a distinct change in color if her fur wasn't so dark. Brows knit tightly, Mandrake stomped her hooves and stood up again, pointing at all of the new babbens that had made their way to the group aside from the one she was already acquainted with and hadn't asked to help out. "I'm saying it to all of you! It's our thing! We're gonna do it!"

Tangles nodded at Candy Dandy.
"Okay, the pink haired filly (I'm sorry, what was your name, dear?) is with Lullaby on cooking duty," Tangles checked off boxes on the list. "Remember, follow the recipes!"
He looked to Larry, "I'm going to have to start getting everyphony's name soon enough. This little red fellow's in charge of pie crusts, anyone who wants to help with those will team up with him."
"C'mon, Mandrake, we need to share. We can even share responsibilities," Tangles nosed his little filly gently. "No grouchy faces, okay? Let's make Momma and Daddy proud."
He trotted over to Sweet Surrender and said,"Okay, little mister, here's the cart. Once it's loaded with fresh pies, you've got to put yourself in the cart harness and pull this cart to each house in order. Don't overload yourself or you'll tire out fast. If we can find someone else to partner you with, we will."

Candy perked up when Tangles said that she could help. "I'm Candy Dandy!" she reminded him, rising from her rump and giving Sweet Surrender an encouraging look.
"Go get 'im!" she said, placing a hoof on his shoulder and then bouncing over to Lullaby and gazing closely at the recipes. They didn't seem too difficult, but she knew that sometimes her mamma messed up really easy recipes because she got distracted. After looking over the lists one more time, she waved at her companion in baking.
"You must be Lullaby! It's nice to meet you!"

Just as quickly as she stood up for the family event, she was shot down by none other than her father. Mandrake felt as if the wind was kicked out of her and she stared in disbelief at Tangles' nosing and quick dismissal as well as Candy Dandy's leap back into excitement as she proceeded to be ignored. "B-but daddy!"
This didn't make any sense to her! If they needed help from the start, they should've asked for it in the first place but that wasn't something that was mentioned! She thought this was just for the family, something they could all do together! Her chest felt tight as she breathed shallowly, each breath coming quickly as she fought back the stinging in her eyes and the swelling mix of frustration and embarrassment. As she grit her teeth to choke back a hiccup, Mandrake sunk low to the ground and sulked her way from Moth-Drops back to her post at the vegetables.
Was she supposed to just get back to work after that? This wasn't fair!

That loud blue girl... Surrender wanted to tackle her and defend his sister's honor. But he wasn't very good at street fighting either. He just wasn't a brawler. Besides, while he was busy giving her the meanest glare he could, the large green Phony was talking to him about cart duty. Okay! One task at a time. First, wait for pies. Then, deliver pies. Then, vengeance.
Oh, but who was he kidding? Last time he was in a fight, he just rolled over to show his belly right away, and then got kicked in the face a lot. That loud girl looked like she could probably take him.
Sweet Surrender pouted while he waited by his cart.

Moth-Drops quivered a little at Mandrake's outburst. This looked like a lot of fun, but she didn't want to intrude or anything. "Maybe, uh... well, how about maybe just you wash the vegetables? And I can carry 'em to you and then everybody else can do the other stuff and that way it's still special to you but the work still gets done?" The little pegasus held her breath; she was glad to spend time with Mandrake and the rest of her family, but she didn't want her friend to be upset, and if she thought that it would help, she could go do something else or just watch. "But if you want me to leave, I can go do something else. I don't mind."

Mandrake didn't notice the glare she was getting. She was too busy glaring at the innocent vegetables waiting to be picked in front of her. When Moth fluttered by and offered her suggestion, she just gave a shallow shake of her head. "My sister's gonna wash 'em. I'm gonna pick 'em." With that, she leaned forward and took hold of the first carrot stalk between her teeth and pulled, digging a little of the dirt around it with her front hooves at the same time. It struggled against her but she managed to pull it out with only a small tear and bite mark in the leafy stalk which was going to be discarded anyhow.
She didn't quite hear the rest of Moth-Drop's explanation until the last part and, carrot dangling from her mouth, she stared at the other filly in disbelief. "Wha--" the carrot fell, "No, no, you don't gotta go!" Her ears folded back and she plopped her rump in the dirt once more, hanging her head and glancing begrudgingly around the area at all the other intruders.
Why did no one else have a problem with this? Not her dad, not Knots or Lullaby? Her mom had fallen asleep again and didn't seem startled from her yell but was she honestly the only one getting their jimmies rustled at the prospect?! Giving an indignant snort, Mandrake glanced over to her sister who was a few yards away, then back at the fallen carrot, the vegetable field next to her, and Moth-Drops floating near. "I... I guess if you wanna help--" she mumbled a bit bitterly, "--W-would you mind taking some veggies to my sister over there? It'd be faster if I could just pick 'em and she could keep washing and neither of us had to stop."

Larry was a little startled that the darker female had been so upset at the rush to help. Weren't they suppose to be helping? He looked at his decorative crusts and frowned a bit. There seemed so much to do it would be faster to have help. He puffed up his chest and was about to use his big words when the green stallion spoke up for them. He let out his breath quickly then smiled. Good. He could continue.
He saw the other colt who would be delivering the pies and smiled. At least he wasn't the only boy here as it all seemed to be girls. Save for the stallion and the pale looking colt peeling the ingredients. "Greetings fellow assister! I am Poet Lariat, but most of my relations call me Larry. Once I am done with the crusts I can bring the ready pies to you! I can also help you load them!"

Knots pushed her captain's cap atop her head and rolled up her imaginary sleeves. She pulled on a large apron and started filling her washtub with buckets of clean water.
"We come on the sloop John B, my grandfather and me~", she sang dumping water into the tub with a bucket, emptying it cheerily before going to fetch more water from the outdoor pump. "Around Nassau town we did roam~!"

Moth-Drops smiled at her friend. "Ok, if you're sure, I won't go. I'll help carry these to your sister! Or maybe," she said, pausing as she noticed how hard the filly had to tug to get the carrot out of the ground, "I can help get the ones that grow up on the tall vines. Like, the ones that only your dad could reach." That would probably be a pretty good job for a pegasus. She wanted to say something more to console Mandrake, but she didn't really know what to say. The faster this went, the faster they could enjoy the fruits of their labors- and then all the others would go away and leave the family alone. She wasn't sure how to word that, though, and fortunately, she found herself saved by the music coming from the little green unicorn with the washtub. "Oh! I know that one!" she squeaked, joining in. "Drinking all niiiight, got into a fiiiiight!"

"Don't worry, she's always like that," Knots said to Moth-Drops. "Hi, I'm Knots! Sing with me, it'll make this job go faster."
She dropped the bucket under the outdoor pump and pumped with her forelegs as she sang.
"Well I feel so broke up, I wan-na go home! So hoist up the John B's sail~!"

"If you wanna get the high up ones too, that's fine," she told Moth after a small pile had been accrued, "Just take those over to Knots." She glanced back to her sister who assured Moth that she was "always like that". Mandrake frowned, ears folding back with renewed embarrassment, and she tucked quickly back to work.
Mandrake didn't know the song her friend and sister were singing but she tried her best to hum along or something so she wouldn't keep grumping and slow down productivity. Swishing her tail, she readied to pull another carrot from the ground. This one came a bit easier despite its size compared to the little filly and she giggled to herself after she fell on her bottom. Her laughter didn't last long when she glanced behind herself and saw all the other fillies and colts she told to scram and shouted at.
Maybe that wasn't the most fair thing to do. They were just being nice.... b-but it was still supposed to be a family thing, wasn't it?! ...Well... none of her family seemed to share that idea either. Was she wrong or was everyone else?

Lullaby had, for the most part, ignored Mandrake’s shrieks. It had been bound to happen over something sooner or later, so he kept his head down and kept peeling vegetables. When the storm had passed, he turned to smile at Candy Dandy. “H-hi. It’s nice to meet you.” He pushed some of the vegetables over for the pink filly. “We have to make sure the pot doesn’t boil too hard or it will ruin the vegetables. A-fter that…” He peered at the recipe. “… then we can do the fruit filling. I-if that’s okay?” He wasn’t used to taking charge and he hoped she wouldn’t mind. “Oh dear.” Pink Lemonade tutted at Mandrake’s display and then went to find someone to help. Delivery sounded good. That would give her good use of her Phony-skills. With a perky grin she trotted over towards Sweet Surrender and Larry were standing by the cart. “Hi there! I’m Pink Lemonade. I’ll help out with delivery. Oh, I can be the quality check girl as well.”

"Nah, she has her moments. When I met her, she was perfectly lovely." She didn't mention that the earth filly had nearly scared her to death in a haunted house when they first met. Moth-Drops winked at Mandrake to let her know that she was teasing, then fluttered up to a pea vine and began to drop the pods into the basket, occasionally popping one into her mouth.
"See how the main sail sets! Call for the captain ashore, let me go home!" she sang as she worked, munching on the odd pea pod. "These are really good. I hope it's ok that I'm eating a few... though I should probably wash them first. Oh, well. Did you guys do up this whole big garden yourself?"

"That sounds perfectly perfect!" Candy Dandy said, sliding the peeled vegetables over to where she could easily reach them. She began to carefully drop them into the pot, making sure to not splash Lullaby or herself in the process. In truth, she probably could have done the cooking part on her own. Her mom made sure to try and teach all of her phoals how to cook. But Candy Dandy liked having someone to talk to! The little colt seemed nervous. She noticed that every so often, he stuttered. "So how come your name is Lullaby? Can you sing really well? Or do you put phonies to sleep?" Her questions were innocent in nature. She just wanted him to talk!
