That was surprisingly easy. Perhaps it was just that reavers were blunt creatures, on the whole, and preferred things to be done in a straightforward manner without duplicity and Tomi dealing with him in this way had been something he could understand more easily than his circumlocutions. With luck it would turn out to be more helpful to Tomi to have things done this way.

"I understand," Tomi said. So it wouldn't be as easy as all that to get Halvdan's story out of him. Oh well. Something would be better than nothing. And if the others were so gods-cursed interested in knowing what had happened, they could get it out of him.

As Halvdan began to speak Tomi settled into a comfortable position and prepared to listen and remember. It took a good deal of training to be able to listen and remember things so that they could later be recalled exactly as they were spoken. Tomi was not the best at it, but he had mastered the skill, as every lawspeaker must.
