Maya gripped Pacju's fur as tight as she could without hurting the Radaku, she was feeling tense. It wasn't helping that the Alkidike was starting to worry more about her companions well being, they had been running for quite some time. Which would mean the creature had not given up the chase, Pacju would have slowed to rest otherwise. Maya clenched her teeth trying to keep her breathing long deep and regular to add a little more calm to the desperate mount. This land did not welcome her easily and she was starting to form a great distaste for it. Keeping the child safe Maya let out another breath chancing the ability to look back only to find the beast had gone.

Narrowing her dark eyes in confusion Maya silently requested her Radaku to turn around much to the beast resistance. Irritated she tried again but Pacju continued running. The beast had to be around them somewhere, until a large shadow passed over them glancing down briefly before glancing up to see the great beast above them. "Pacju back!" This time she yelled as well as commanded the creature but it was to late. The beast had caught the back end of the light Radaku and sent the trio sprawling forward.

Maya recovered quickly from the tumble checking to make sure the child was still attached to her. Thankfully she couldn't sense her missing but her weapons where a different matter. Her arrows were now strewn about the landscape some broken. Clenching her fists tighter around the wood of her bow Maya was prepared to use it as a club and swing is she had to.

The creature righted itself, having collapsed under the Radaku’s fall as well. It stood over the fallen Pacju, teeth bared, as if taking a moment to decide whether it would be best to attack the tired Radaku, or to go after the infant who was still clinging to (but now wailing unhappily) and protected by the Alkidike woman.

The animal snarled at Pacju once more before making its decision. The creature seemed ot think that, even exhausted, the Radaku was a better match for it than the other two… and better to attack now, while it was still down and out, than to wait for the Familiar to recover.

The creature, clearly growing weary itself, began to run towards Maya and the child. Again, it leapt towards them, claws outstretched and teeth flashing, aiming to snatch the wrapped infant away from the Alkidike’s body.

Maya watched fearful for her companion as the two shifted and the creature emerged first. Gripping the bow tight enough her veins stood out in her hands Maya let out a scream as she swung her bow at the creature, intent on knocking it far enough away that she would have a chance to dash for an arrow and send it flying. She had little interest in calming the child's fears at this point since even if creatures where in the vicinity it was unlikely they would attack if there was already a battle going on. At least that was what she had hoped for, pleading mentally for Pacju to get up and be ok.

Though the Radaku had been stunned momentarily it wasn't about to leave Maya undefended for long. Struggling to stand with some difficulty Pacju finally pulled herself right before launching herself at the beast as well. Two could play the attack game, and her tail was braced to strike as well as her fangs and claws.

The creature faltered backwards as Maya’s swinging bow hit it squarely in the throat. It shook its head, the wind knocked out of it. Suddenly, Pacju’s glowing horns were impacting its ribs. The animal fell to the ground, weary, battered, and bruised.

With a growl, it swiftly righted itself and took off in the opposite direction. Clearly, it would not be winning this battle. There was no point in sticking around and getting itself killed…

In the meantime, the baby strapped to Maya’s chest continued to wail, clearly frightened. It was a distressing day for anyone, that was for sure, let alone a defenseless infant whose only real indication of what was happening was the Alkidike woman’s heartbeat.

The pressure on the bow as it connected with the beast was more than Maya had expected but she continued to hold fast to her weapon. Her attack had worked! A small well of pride built inside her as she watched it stagger in front of her. She had successfully stopped it from coming at her but it wasn't going away yet, perhaps it was one of those type of creatures that fought to the death. If that was the case she would have to push herself onward, though even she was feeling the weight of the events on her body. Pulling her arms above her head gripping the bow tightly Maya was prepared to bring the weapon crashing down on the creatures skull, even if it meant snapping her bow in the process.

Taking in a deep breath Maya was about to bring the weapon crashing down her eyes catching Pacju as the Radaku collided with the unknown creature. The growl that came from the beast after that only seemed to send more adrenalin crashing through the Alkidike she wasn't going to loose to a beast like this while saving a life. Though the next action of the beast was more confusing than she had first anticipated. Watching it tear away through the forest dragging all the strength the girl had in her, with it.

Maya's legs felt like jelly, they wiggled beneath her until finally giving way and the Alkidike crumpled into a sitting position. Only just then realizing the screams of the infant she held close. Looking down wearily at the tiny earthling Maya smiled as she cooed a strange lullaby while bouncing the child, hoping the soft voice would calm the screaming.

Pacju whimpered before trotting over to great her companion, checking her for any injuries before settling down to tend to her own. "Do you think we are going to be able to find her family?" Maya questioned the Radaku who didn't seem intent on responding to the Alkidikes words. Giving out a half chuckle as she continued trying to calm the child Maya looked around. She had no idea how she was going to return the child to its proper kind let alone if she even wanted to stay in Sauti this place was going to be the death of her. Maya was seriously considering packing up and heading home, even if it meant taking the child with her.

Long moments passed while Maya rocked half sleepily back and forth her mind frantically trying to work out the odds and outcomes. Even if she were able to track her way back to the nest there was no guarantee she would not come in contact with another of those beasts. Besides she had no idea how far the birds had originally brought the tiny child let alone if the tribe had already moved on before Maya was able to get to them.

The infant’s crying slowly ceased as the Alkidike cooed and bounced. The child stared up at Maya with large, round eyes, intrigued by the strange lullaby pouring from between her lips.

”Hello?” Without warning, a voice pierced the still air. ”Is anyone there?” It didn’t take long for the owner of the voice to appear, a slender young woman (perhaps a bit too young), clearly distressed, came bounding around the side of a rocky crag. Her eyes were red and she looked nearly as exhausted as Maya did.

Following on her heels was Yansa.

”My baby…” The woman breathed as she spotted the Alkidike who sleepily clutched her child. She rushed forward, but slowed herself when she spotted the Radaku, a strange beast to her. The woman clutched her hands to her chest. ”Thank you… thank you so much for saving my baby.” Tears had begun to stream down her already tear-stained face. Clearly this woman had been as worried about finding Maya as the Alkidike had been about finding her.

Pacju crouched close to Maya after a little while before falling into a restful state beside the Alkidike. Relieved that the child was calming down again Maya lifted one hand to pet her companion the voice of someone speaking brought both the Alkidikes and Radaku's head up simultaneously towards the sound. Reaching out for her bow in case this was yet another attempt on the babies life Maya relaxed when the figures finally showed themselves. Though she seemed far more focused on Yansa than the mother. The strong leader of her tribe had never formerly spoken or even acknowledge the Alkidike before and it was strange that she was accompanying the distressed wind earthling.

Licking her lips to moisten them Maya pulled herself to her feet when the woman came to a stop, glancing down at Pacju who had seemed to have gone back to a dazed state. Removing the fabric from around her body and holding the child out to the girl, Maya felt a rush of need to scold the mother for having let her baby be taken. Though she held back, Maya was far to exhausted to reprimand a strange earthlings ability to care for the child. Especially if life was just as hard as this on a daily basis for the girl. Alkidikes protected their young and the adventure today only gave her great mother Aisha a new longing and respect.

"She's not hurt but probably scared after what we've been through." Maya said her eyes focusing back on Yansa with curiosity. Her tribe wasn't found here, so why was the older Alkidike standing here of all places? Worry set in her feet as the thought she had somehow broken the fragile alliance between them and the earthlings. She had single-handedly caused a war.

The woman pulled her baby to herself, cooing at her and apologizing frantically in hushed tones. She seemed to be half-listening to what Maya was saying, but nodded as she explained that the child may very well be frightened. Slowly, the woman began walking away, the baby still clutched protectively to herself.

Yansa watched as the duo walked away, before approaching the Prentice. ”Are you hurt?” She asked gently, pulling a water skin from her hip and handing it to Maya, who was clearly parched. She had never been formally introduced to Maya, but Yansa kept tabs on most of the Prentices within her tribe, especially those who had decided to join her on this journey.

Maya shrugged with a half smile as the mother took her baby and left. She really couldn't expect any more than that she guessed, since had never actually been a mother. Not that she was one now. At least from what she could she see hadn't started any war yet, perhaps Yansa was here for another reason. Shifting awkwardly as the Alkidike drew closer Maya fought the urge to take a step back and bolt towards her companion.

Hurt? The feelings of surprise washed through her though her face remained blank as she blinked back at Yansa and shook her head slowly. She didn't feel pain even though obvious cuts and bruises were covering her body. It might take a while for the pain to be felt, considering all her energy had been put in protecting another life. A life that at the time depended on her to survive. Her eyes widened when she saw the water skin and gingerly reached out to take it, intent on gulping down the water. Maya was only now becoming aware of just how tired and thirsty she was after today.

"Thank you." Maya nodded gratefully to Yansa turning to glance back at Pacju who was currently resting a fair distance off.

Yansa smiled, returning the water skin to her hip. ”I don’t think we’ve been properly introduced.” She stood, her arms outstretched to embrace her Sister. ”Although I do know that you’re Maya and I hope you know my name to be Yansa.”

The woman glanced at the Radaku, indicating her water skin once again. ”If you’d like to give some to your Radaku, you are welcome to. She looks tired as well.”

The woman’s dark eyes were trained intently on Maya. ”That was a wonderful and brave thing you did, protecting that child. Even more impressive was the fact that you managed to get rid of that predatory animal without killing it.”

"I know who you are, it would be weak of me not to know my sisters. Especially those that lead us." Though the outstretched arms seemed tempting to Maya her concern was more towards her companion than the Alkidike. Glancing back at Yansa in order to show respect as she spoke she couldn't have been more grateful. Clutching the water skin close and nodding her thanks to Yansa with a slight bow she hurried back to her light colored Radaku dripping some water onto her muzzle to signal the arrival of fresh water.

Waiting until she had aroused her companion from slumber she poured some into her hand waiting until Pacju had completely finished. Once the first handful Maya had poured into her hand was gone she repeated the process until she felt guilty for how much water she had drained from Yansa's water skin. Making sure there was still some water left in case Yansa needed it to make it back home.

Checking her familiar over for any deep or lasting wounds, she wasn't able to find any immediately and was pleased. Raising back from her knees to her feet Maya's eyes closed a little as she blushed at Yansa's final comment. Guilt was lingering with the beast in case it ended up dying from infection or other injury that it had sustained while she tried to fend it off. "Death is a very sad thing, Yansa. It should never happen unless its the very last resort. The child, aren't we taught to protect the younglings the most?"
PostPosted: Wed Aug 15, 2012 8:24 pm

Yansa watched as Maya tended to her Radaku, smiling gently as she observed the kind girl.

The elder woman nodded as Maya returned to speak with her. ”You’re right, but some people think that killing, being able to bring home a trophy, is better proof of their strength. And with younglings, although we are indeed taught to protect them, many are fearful and selfish. There are a surprising number who might have abandoned the child when faced with danger, in favor of saving themselves.”

Yansa smiled at Maya, placing a hand gently on the younger woman’s shoulder. ”Maya, you have proven yourself to be selfless and courageous. No doubt you could handle a stronger leadership position within the tribe. It would serve the Alkidikes well for you to become a Blade.”

"A-a blade?" Maya didn't often stutter though she found it still slipped out in the very moment Yansa seemed to compliment her. Maya was only following the very upbringing that she had been given. She had seen enough of her sisters die unnecessarily and didn't want the fate to pass on to any more if she could help it. "If that is the path I should take then I am grateful for the opportunity. I wont let you down." Bowing her head politely Maya still blushed a small smile spread on her lips. She wasn't the cause of a war as she had originally thought and it was such a lifted weight to her.

Yansa smiled as Maya blushed and bowed, humbly accepting the position that had been offered to her. The elder woman nodded. Taking her spear, she sliced the edge of her thumb, just enough to draw blood. With one hand resting steadily on Maya’s shoulder, Yansa drew a lotus-shaped mark on the Prentice’s forehead with the crimson liquid. ”You are deserving of the title ‘Blade,’ Maya. Congratulations.”

Smiling brightly at her younger Sister, she bowed her head gently in mutual respect. ”I know you will serve us well.”
