Shukri followed along as Maya was taken into one of the large tents used to treat the injured. Wanting to be out of the way he kept to one edge and tried to relax as he put his bag down. He could deliver the eggs he'd collected later, they wouldn't spoil just by waiting a little longer. Though he felt bad Shukri was a little grateful that Fai had not been able to follow him into the tent. The girl was one of his best friends but he couldn't answer her questions right now, his mind was wrapped up in making sure Maya came out of this alright, he had promised her it would be ok after all. The concerned look on the face of the healers was worrying him. He didn't think she'd lost that much blood, was it just that alkidike were strange and they truly didn't know how to help?
Pale blue eyes watched as the healers murmured amongst themselves and set about dealing with Maya's leg, once the wrapping came off Shukri blanched, the skin underneath did not look right, even for someone who was normally sort of green and yellow. Averting his eyes the earthling tried to settle his stomach and reassure himself that the healers knew what they were doing and that everything would be fine.

The first thing registering in the Alkidikes senses was a sweet yet dry smell. Almost like cooked fruit and yet it wasn't. The pain in her leg was gone for the time being and Maya faintly thought she was home save for the chill in the air and strange murmuring voices. They didn't sound feminine to her ears compared to the sound of her sisters, not to mention the ground was quite a bit more solid and lumpy compared to her hammock like bed in her comforting tree. Flicking her eyes open it slowly registered in her where she was, this had to be the camp Shukri had mentioned earlier. Shifting to sit up Maya glanced around the room quickly, surveying what she would possibly have to fight in case they were holding weapons over her.
Much to the Alkidikes surprise however she found the opposite. One unfamiliar earthling was situated near two other patients on mats laying on the ground. He seemed to be dressing wounds of one with careful moving hands. Blinking slowly Maya saw Pacju's shadow pacing around the outside of the strange cloth like shelter she was under. However everything seemed to be far away. As if they were keeping her at a safe distance from everyone else. As her eyes continued to search the room they settled on the familiar wind males face. Shukri. Gulping silently as the unfamiliar blush dusted her cheeks and she quickly looked away from him.

Shifting to sit up as best she could Maya found herself looking down at the dressing on her leg. They were different than the ones she had seen the shifters use. Far more unrecognizable from the ones her own kind used. Placing her hands behind her as she moved into a sitting position Maya ran her hand down the wrappings trying to figure out why it no longer stung.

Relief washed over Shruki as Maya finally woke up and seemed to be feeling better. He was unsurprised when she focused her attention less on him though than her surroundings and injury. He supposed if he'd woken up in a strange place filled with people he didn't know he'd try first to get his bearings before anything and then make sure he was alright. Although he doubted Maya knew how serious her injury had truly been, even he himself had been unaware until the healers had told him.
With Sabri preoccupied with another patient Shukri took the initiative to make his way over to Maya and explain to her what was going on. The were a soft smile on his face meant to reassure the alkidike, she was in good hands here." It's good to see you awake, how do you feel?" Shukri himself was just happy his sort of maybe friend was doing better so far as the healers were concerned. It would have been pretty bad to promise that everything would be ok and then have something horrible happen. Plus he was pretty sure Pacju would have eaten him if anything had happened to Maya.

Nervousness welled inside as she could hear someone's approach looking up her eyes settled on Shukri again which didn't help her blush from disappearing, it only seemed to make it worse. His smile seemed to captivate her briefly before she regathered her bearings and glanced back down at her leg when he finally seemed to stop moving. She didn't want him to catch her staring at him, what if he took it as an aggressive move? Turning a whole tribe loose on her in the current state she was in was a sure fire way to die. Even if her Radaku was waiting outside the shelter it was unlikely she would survive. Surprise settled around her when he had turned out to be curious about her injury. Intent on showing her gratitude she smiled lightly again raising her head to face him.
"I am glad to be alright. It's strange though. I don't seem to be feeling any pain from my leg. I know it should hurt more than this." Rubbing the dressings on her wound Maya's curiosity shone broke through her as words and questions tumbled forth. "What is this? I've never come in contact with such strange substances before. Are they edible?" Pausing she let her eyes wander around the place again before she took on a more serious tone. "How long was I gone?"

She could already guess Pacju had managed to bring them here and thankfully unharmed yet her stomach growled with her new found excitement. Reaching down Maya started searching through a satchel on her waist pulling out some fruit. It wasn't as fresh as she had first picked it but thankfully well enough to eat. Satisfied she offered it to Shukri carefully. "Thanks." She muttered.

Shukri unused to the ways and looks of the alkidike was mildly concerned with the way Maya's face seemed to be shifting in colour and he hoped she was ok and that she wouldn't puke on him as soon as he got over to her. When that didn't happen he relaxed, not that he'd blame her for being sick but Shukri really didn't want to be vomited on, part of the reason he wasn't a healer was his adversity to dealing with other people's bodily fluids.
"I promised you I'd get help you don't have to thank me," Shukri replied as he took the offered fruit. He had no ideas what it was but it looked interesting. " I don't know how much sway you have in your tribe but um it'd be nice later if you could let them know that Sauti is our home and you can't just claim it." It wasn't a demand or anything but Shukri hoped Maya would feel a little guilty if a member of the wind tribe saved her and she turned around and helped her people try to take over the land.

Quickly though he moved on to answer her questions. "You were unconscious for about half the day, it's early evening now," he explained. "I'm not sure what all of it is but I wouldn't eat it," Shukri chuckled softly "I do know they used rock moss to stop the bleeding and then they had to make a special dressing to numb the pain and draw out the poison." Humour left Shukri's face as he continued to speak. "You got stung by a mountain crawler, they look a lot like rocks and they can be hard to see if you're not used to looking for them." Shukri had grown up learning to spot the subtle diffidence between the ground and the bugs camouflage carapace as well as being careful of where he stepped and put his fingers while climbing.

"You should be ok by tomorrow though but you need to stay off the leg as much as possible," Shukri knew he couldn't very well order Maya to bed rest but he could put his serious face on while he spoke. "Don't worry about Pacju, Faiza has been fawning over her all afternoon." Unable to get to him or the mystery woman Faiza had settled for pestering the strange mount and trying to appease her with food, water and offers of brushing.

The filling of the air taking lightly over the spot where the fruit had once been Maya took a bite of the fruit graciously curious to see if he liked the fruit as well but he seemed to be answering her stream of questions so she didn't hold it against him if he had forgotten the fruit. Chewing slowly when the subject of land came up Maya twitched, all the land belonged to the Alkidikes though they did respect that other tribes lived on it as well and she tolerated that as long as they didn't destroy it. Watching the creatures shadow as Pacju continued to pace her tail flicking about in a semi irritated way she glanced back towards Shukri. Half a day clearly explained the rested feeling and the strange atmosphere in the air. She usually was home by now or asleep if she was traveling away from home.
Taking another bite she slowly absorbed the information from the earthling with interest. A slow feeling of guilt settled on her, she had no idea how to repay the boy for his generosity in from what she determined was saving her life. Not to mention his tribe. Just as she was about to ask if she could go out to visit Pacju the information that she wasn't to leave seeped in a frown cast across her features before he mentioned that someone had been fawning over her Radaku companion.

Instantly she turned to him, a pleading look in her eyes as she spoke. "This Faiza, has been careful not to touch Pacju right? She's a Radaku, if pushed to far or irritated to much her tail might cause some injury to this person." Maya hadn't had any time to warn him of the beasts actions, or of how to remain safe while around a Radaku that had been pushed and is tense. "You say I need to stay off of my leg I understand... but please. Take me to Pacju I need to make sure shes ok and wont harm anyone."

Shukri nibbled a little on the fruit as Maya spoke, he was curious about it's taste and far less concerned than her about Faiza. The youngling might be small but she was smart and fast, if Pacju had become threatening she'd probably have back away or climbed to safety. It wasn't so much that he didn't respect Pacju but that he had faith in his young friend to know when to back down. Well that and he figured if Faiza was going to set the creature off it would have happened by now. The pale haired boy stored the name Radaku away in his mind to ask about later, curious to know all there was about the creatures that seemed to serve as much reliable mounts and protectors.
Still Maya's worrying would do her no good, the healers had always told Shukri that the point of bedrest was to be calm and let your blood slowly easily. Too much exercise or worrying made the healing take longer be it the herbal kind or the magic. Swallowing a bite of the fruit Shrukri nodded. "I can help you go see her but just for a few minutes, you really do need to rest, you can use me as a crutch for now though." It'd be a little awkward with the height difference but the biggest thing was that Shukri help keep Maya from applying too much weight to her injured leg.

A happy form relief pooled in Maya's eyes as she looked up warmly into Shukri's eyes, he really meant to help her reach Pacju!? A bright smile worked its way into her face as she struggled to rise to her feet. Height didn't seem to even faze the Alkidike even though Shukri seemed to be worried about it. Though she figured it was better not to speak of it in case he was sensitive about his size, some of the other earthlings she had met seemed to be particular to her being a 'giant'.
Reaching the opening Maya seemed surprised to see the sun seemed to be setting over the large mountains. A familiar site she saw often through the tree's back home when she found herself returning late to her sisters. Somehow the way the sky seemed to be painted in orange and the off cast of twilight against the pale skin of the wind tribe wasn't helping Maya when she glanced around to Shukri. Though she was distracted within moments as Pacju appeared almost out of air beside her with a gentle curious rumble.

Her smile brightened when she felt the creatures horns brush against her, the pale glow her companion cast off added yet more rainbow colors to the area around her. Reaching up both hands she wrapped them around Pacju before burring her face into the beasts reptilian neck. "You're ok." She mumbled as if she had been separated from the creature for weeks on end and it had finally returned after she thought it dead. The soft whining purr that the female Radaku rumbled comforted the Alkidike as she stood there before turning back to Shukri.

"You can pet her if you want. She wont bite."

Shukri was fascinated by the fact that Pacju's horns glowed, it was such a strange thing and he wondered if it was to help her see at night or just a random natural feature of some species where she was from. Either way it was a useful ability to have and Shukri noted that if he managed to secure himself some sort of pet he really did want it to be practical like this and not just some showpeice or comfort creature.
The earthling buried the bubbling jealousy he felt with the taste of the fruit he was continuing to eat. It had a peculiar flavour that he quite quite describe but quite liked. Shukri had a feeling that if proper trade routes ever opened up amongst the tribes fruit like this would command a respectable price.

Shukri laughed softly and shook his head at the offer to pet the radaku. "I wouldn't dare come between you." Framed in the sunset against the mountains and the pastel sky Maya and Pacju reuniting was a charming sight. It felt wrong to interrupt them, especially when he had just recently seen how much worry could be reflected in an alkidikes dark eyes. Those two weren't just pet and owner, rider and mount they were something more, something Shukri didn't quite have words for.

"She really loves you," Faiza noted softly, the youngling girl appearing from around the side of the tent. There was no jealousy in her tone only awe and respect as if she too saw the bond between the pair.

Maya blinked when Pacju started nosing her satchel curiously as if she held some sort of food in there and after giggling brightly, the Alkidike produced a large form of half cooked meat. Greedily Pacju devoured the meat before the others and seemed to be content if not for the moment. Petting her companion along her neck Maya glanced back at Shukri as if having expected him to be showing some form of attention to her beast and yet he seemed to stand offish. She smiled when she backed up from Pacju and reached out to take hold of his hand intent on guiding him towards the Radaku for him to pet. "You wouldn't be coming between us." Her voice seemed to be somewhat softer in tone than normal as she turned back to Pacju.
The sound of a small female's voice as it spoke startled Maya as she turned to see the source. Smiling in a friendly manner as she found the youngling emerging from the side of the coverings. Maya thought she looked rather cute and her none accusatory tone reminded her of the child sisters back home protected by Aisha. A slight pain of homesickness gushed through her then dissipated as fast as it had come. She did return once a year as required during a special season for her kind though they never seemed to talk about it.

"Are you... Faiza?" It had taken Maya a moment to remember the name Shukri had mentioned back under the cloth coverings though she felt happy she had. At least she was unharmed for one who seemed to be so interested in her companion. Perhaps Pacju was becoming more tolerant of other's around her. It was a really common for Pacju to rather eat those that came near her or pester her to much than let them be. Was she perhaps more worried about her than the small child? "You're rather cute did you want to pet her too?"

By the way the radaku devoured the food from Maya's bag Shukri had a feeling she'd ignored everything Fai had tried to offer her. Some creatures were picky like that though, not eating things they didn't know or that came from strangers. He supposed such selectivity and loyalty helped keep he animals safe during disputes and whatnot though. Having never personally owned any sort of companion Shukri was only vaguely aware of the sorts of things people like that had to take into account. It was something he would remedy in time though, when he had the ability to provide for himself and another. Hmm, that made him wonder just what it was Maya did for her tribe that allowed her the luxury of a companion, or was it simply that the amount of resources available allowed more people of different status to keep pets than was possible in Sauti.
Shukri was startle when Maya grabbed his hand but he did not pull back for fear of putting her off balance. Her reassurances that this was ok allowed the young man's natural curiosity to take over and he was quickly running his hand along Pacju's hide able to enjoy the opportunity to experience something wholly foreign to him.

Fai nodded and grinned, not surprised that Shukri had mentioned her, they were friends after all and she had made it her mission to care for Pacju. Or to try to anyways, she'd not had much luck in getting the pretty creature to let her close or help in anyway. Though the youngling understood now why that was. "Yes please," she replied quickly at the offer to pet Pacju, oh this would be exciting. " Did you have her since she was a baby?" the little earthling girl asked curiously. She knew some creatures in Sauti had to be raised from birth or hatching if they were to properly bond to a person.

A small twinkle in her flashed briefly before Maya pushed the emotions back down though that didn't stop the Alkidike from wanting to share the treasured moment when she had met and saved the Radaku as a pup. "Yes, I have had her since she was small." Maya started shifting to feed Pacju another piece of meat to keep her companion happy while the strangers stroked her. "Pacju was very young. The smallest Radaku I have ever seen was this lovely girl. Her siblings where bigger though." Patting her companions side Maya went back into her satchel for another piece of meat pulling out a much smaller morsel.
"You see I was swimming when I heard her mothers cries, when I found her she had been trapped by a Menzuri... like the bug that got me. Full of poison and kills quickly. She was dying and not far off where the babies. Very young and they looked like they were dying. I couldn't let them die and I didn't know anything about them so I took them home to my Elder. She was the only one to survive after all that and I was allowed to keep her. I looked after her while she was growing until she could move on her own and then she and I have looked after each other from then on."

Pausing Maya blushed with embarrassment, "I apologize though I must be boring you." Her hand slowly brushed over Pacju's side as she stopped talking trying to pull her blush back under control. What could possibly have been going on with her? "I never knew she could carry me until we met another one who had been bonded as a pair."

Shukri was stunned by the end of the tale, Maya had risked getting near one of those giant crystal spiders that Takoda had told him about just to save some helpless pups. He could be tenderhearted at times and on occasion brave but Shukri usually avoided putting himself in situations where he faced possibly death regardless of the reason. The earthling boy was awed by Maya's bravery, she had done something he would not have dared to do. It seemed only right that fate had rewarded her with a loyal companion in return.
It seemed that both Maya and Takoda had way of surprising Shukri with their determination to help the weak be it plant or animal. Both shifter and alkidike were fascinating people that the prentice was glad to have met.

"The story isn't boring, it's sad and I'm glad Pacju lived" Fai replied softly stroking the radaku's mane.

Shruki nodded, agreeing with his friend "You were incredibly brave to have saved her and she worked hard to get you here when you needed help." It was a really sweet story and one he thought his siblings might appreciate tomorrow. "How long have you been riding, you seemed very comfortable on her back."

Maya nodded warmly at the child though couldn't find words to say as Pacju stepped back from the beast as she moved to settle down on her belly. Having a difficult not beaming at Shukri as he complimented her when he mentioned her riding she couldn't hold back any longer. "Actually we only started a few days ago, this is our first trip while I rode on her back." Maya admitted glancing back and forth between the two wind earthlings she was talking with. They both seemed like such open and wonderful people, she wanted to spend more time with them after her wound had healed. Perhaps she would return soon, she could always invite them to travel with her in the end as well right? Not that he would take her up on that, she thought, after all everyone seemed to fear Alkidike's. Maybe that was what seemed to attract her.
"Pacju and I have been through quite a few things together and I don't see that ever ending."

Feeling faint and with a slight pain in her leg Maya had to work to keep the emotions from registering on her face. She didn't want to seem weak to the ones who had just finished helping her get better. "Though I should probably not stand for much longer as you said Shukri." Maya said trying not to meet his gaze.

Maya was certainly talented, to have adjusted to learning to ride so quickly, although Shukri supposed having such a deep bond with Pacju helped. He frowned as soon as she voiced interest in heading back into the healing tent, he had completely forgotten to pay attention to making sure she wasn't showing signs of pain. Shukri could be self absorbed like that thinking only about what he was enjoying and experiencing sometimes, he hoped Maya wasn't in too much pain. "It's fine, I'm certain pacju would like to rest too and Fai should be heading back to her family," he replied softly. It was getting a bit late for youngling to be out, especially without a shawl on to guard against the chill of the night.
Faiza rolled her eyes but nodded, before quickly giving Maya a tight hug and disappearing off into the darkness, with a promise to return in the morning.

Shukri laughed as he moved closer to Maya, offering himself as her crutch again. "I'll help you back to the tent so you can rest for the night, and thank you for the fruit earlier, it was delicious." It had been a long but interesting day that left Shukri with much to think about, he imagined he would not let sleep claim him for sometime to come.
