Aleu walked quietly for a short while contemplating what Calfuray had said. In a way the mare was right. And yet Aleu wasn't sure what to say. There was technically a chain of command in the herd, but that really only applied if the Queen was away from the herd, not dead. And while Aleu had little knowledge of how other herds worked she was certain that even they fell to in fighting and problems from time to time. Finally she found what the right words and looked over at her friend. "I think that no herd is perfect. That they all have their problems as well as their good points. Our way isn't perfect, but go to any other herd and I'm sure in time you will find that they too have their issues. Unfortunately there will always be disagreements, even in a seemingly perfect setting, eventually someone will be offended or think something is wrong and it can either be solved peacefully or it can rip the entire structure of the herd apart." It was unfortunate that they had fallen to the later, but Aleu felt certain that if others returned the herd would reform and continue on.

She paused for a moment before continuing on about the chain of command. "There is a chain of command in a way. But again it is not perfect either. It is set up so that the heir holds power while the Queen is away, but when the Queen returns she can over rule any of her daughters decisions if she believes they do not benefit the herd or if they were issued improperly. Should there be no heir the head warrior takes up control in the Queen's absence. But both of these situations stand on the assumption that the Queen will return." A light breeze blew across the land pushed Aleu's mane into her face. The grey mare gave her head a shake to clear her vision before continuing. "Normally the Queen chooses an heir, be it her blood daughter or another in the herd, well before she reaches the point where she will step down, and this is to prevent such fighting from occurring. In Marpe's case, she had help out hope that her last children would produce a female, but when that didn't happen chaos fell upon the herd and the fighting began before she could officially name her successor." She paused once more to look over at Calfuray again. "Perhaps this idea of yours is something that could be suggested to the new Queen, to hopefully prevent this from ever occuring again in the future."

Calfuray took in the mares words with a nod. Indeed she was sure that most herd's had their problems - or at least she was willing to take the grey mares word on it seeing as how she herself couldn't actually recall the typical rules to any herd. Still what she said made sense, when you got that many Soquili in the same place it was really only a matter of time before someone disagreed and since herds seemed to last a good deal of time then it made sense that they had a way to deal with it.

"What a terrible thing, to hope for a daughter so badly and then have to watch not only that dream dissipate..but her herd fall apart because of it? It must have wounded her gravely, perhaps more so then the wounds inflicted on her in the fighting. Was she killed then? This Marpe?" She questioned, asking the last in a quiet voice..curious but not wanting to upset the grey mare in asking. Calfuray wasn't sure how long this fighting had gone on - if she assumed that her wounds were the result of it - which was probable - then it was safe to say that it had been many months ago now, still that was fresh enough for the grey mare to still be grieving perhaps and Aleu had been kind to her, Calfuray had no desire to be cruel...but she did want to know what had happened.

"It was an unfortunate thing to happen and yet it did. It has happened before but it has less of an impact when it is just one of the warriors that produces all males. Even that can hurt the herd in the long run if too few females are born." Aleu let out a sigh, knowing that some warriors had been quite devastated when none of the foals they had over the years turned out to be female. "I know Marpe was hurt by her failures to produce an heir, but I don't think it was a valid reason to start a war within the herd, they could have waited, seen what she had to say before turning on her." She paused considering Calfuray's question. "I...don't know. I left before I knew of her fate. Marpe was an excellent warrior and she had her guards at her side during the fighting...but even that can't make up for overwhelming numbers. The last I saw Marpe she was circled by a great number of the Sisters from the other side, she and her guards were fighting valiantly. But I had to flee before I was spotted." She hoped the Queen had lived but nothing could be for certain until they arrived back in the herds lands.

They walked for a while yet, Aleu somewhat trapped in thought pondering Calfuray's questions even further. There were so many unknowns both with Calfuray herself and with the herd. It would take some time to get home and the knowledge of finally finding out what had happened, be it good or bad, was something that both calmed and frightened Aleu. "No matter what has happened, who lived and who died, the state of the herd I am happy knowing that our history up to that fateful day has been preserved through me." It was a huge weight to carry but Aleu couldn't be happier in knowing the herds history and knowing that she was important no matter who lead the herd. For surely even those who had been on the opposing side would want to remember their past as it was important to their existance and the structure of the herd itself.

Calfuray nodded, though it was difficult for her to place so much stock in one gender over the other - perhaps at one time she had believed this, been born and raised to do so but with the loss of her memories such beliefs seemed to have gone out the window. Would she get them back? Did she want to? It was a hard question to answer and Calfuray wasn't sure if she would be able to do so until she had spent time with this herd, learned what surfaced from the haze of her mind. In any case she chose not to comment on that subject any further for the time being.

"I'm sure that will be a great comfort to the herd once we find them." Calfuray acknowledged, the past seemed to be important to many that she met. It was important to her as well, it must be if she was willing to traverse half the world to find out more about it. "Surely they will be delighted to see you return home again, regardless of who rules." And hopefully that delight would extend to her as well - though without knowing which side she had been on, or her role in the herd and what had happened to begin with that was still very much up in the air. Much as she might like to think she would be welcomed back Calfuray knew there was a good possibility that she would not be and could only hope that she would have time to explain before they attacked her if that were the case. Surely Aleu would help if it all went down that way.

"I hope so." Aleu said with a smile. Even though there was a small fragment of doubt in her mind Aleu was certain, no beyond certain, that no matter who ruled the herd now they would want her back. The only thing that would cause them to believe otherwise is if they decided to throw out the old ways and practically start the herd new. That would be a shame as the herd had been running for so long now and had such a rich history. Aleu would be extremely sad if that were the case as it would leave her homeless and not to mention purposeless. What would one do with an entire herds history and no herd to live in? It was a terrible thought and Aleu gave her head a shake to clear it away. "And they should be happy to see you return as well." She added, though even she wasn't entirely certain of it, Aleu didn't want to put any negativity about going back to the herd.

Continuing to walk along Aleu realized how fast the time had passed today. Normally, when she was traveling alone, the days went by so slowly as she had traveled alone. Sure she had met a few others along the way and it helped to pass a bit of time talking, and on occasion traveling with them, but in the end traveling alone had been a long and lonely thing. With Calfuray here and them talking plenty about the herd the time has passed quickly. Already it was starting to get dark. "We should find somewhere to spend the night, I don't much like traveling at night." Too much one couldn't see and it was easy to get lost. Plus they had been going since morning and she was certain they could both use a break. They continued to walk for a little while until they found a small clearing near the path that would provide them with a sheltered place to sleep for the night.
