Earako giggled softly as toys were thrown about, the sound, like her speaking voice, was high and breathy. It looked like having four arms was really fun! Still, the concept confused her. How did you tell your top arm to do something and not your bottom arm? Did Indigo ever get mixed up.
When the markers were located, her excitement only grew, leaving her bouncing anxiously in place, her wings fully open instead of held tight against her body. They were dark, unlike the rest of her. Earako had yet to find markers that would leave visable marks on them. Sometimes she drew on them just because her Da' couldn't see.
"Red is p'etty." Earako agreed, extending her left arm so that Indigo would have easy access for colouring. She didn't have a problem with any colour really. Except maybe yellow. Yellow reminded her of the lights that hurt her eyes. "I 'ike b'ack bes'. 'ike nightime."

Frankly, Indigo wondered the same sort of thing about the children with wings--didn't it get confusing, having something that wasn't an arm or a tail? How did wings even work? The show she'd once seen on bats said wings were like arms, but she didn't quite get it.
She did, however, look quite impressed when Earako fanned out her dark wings. They really did look like hands, with really long fingers... "Black is good, too," she agreed, uncapping the black marker as well. "It'll match your wings!" She pattered closer to the younger girl, brandishing the markers and considering Earako's outstretched arm. Hm--flowers didn't come in black, but polka dots did, and she could draw polka dots like Keanu's or Sahra's! That would look really pretty.
Mind made up, she hunkered down on her knees, using the black marker to add several big dark splotches on Earako's arm. "This'll be really cool when I'm done," she assured the younger girl. Then, curiously: "Does it tickle? I know it tickles when I draw on me..." Just plain black spots weren't interesting enough, so Indigo added some big round O's, like Cheerios or Lifesavers.

Earako watched, lip between her teeth, as Indigo knelt next to her. She was going to be so pretty when they were done! And then Da' would see, and maybe, when he saw what a good job Indigo did, he wouldn't get so upset when she drew on herself. Not that he really showed it. But Earako knew how to tell. His eyes got all squinty, and he sighed...
And it did tickle, when the marker touched her arm, a little bit cold and somehow strange. When she was drawing on herself, she knew what was going to happen when, and that kept it from feeling so funny. But with Indigo doing it, it was less predictable, and she almost pulled her arm away, just from the instinct of getting away from something ticklish.
"Yeah." She admitted, a giggle behind her words, "I'll t'y to 'old s'ill." The splotches of black and rings looked very cool in her opinion, much better than what she could do for herself. "'s nice!"

The dot Indigo was drawing smudged a bit as Earako pulled back a little, but the velvet worm didn't appear upset by it. In fact, it actually looked kind-of neat, and so she smudged a couple more of the dots with her fingers. "You're doing really good," she added aloud, to the younger girl. "I know whenever somebody tickles me I always get really squirmy."
As the black dots were meeting with approval, Indigo started on another row of them happily, before switching over to Earako's other arm. "Don't want you to look mismatched, after all!" she declared, happily. Now more black dots--now some pretty red spirals down near her wrist and more red splotches on the back of her hand. Indigo had never met anyone with such white skin before, so maybe it was no surprise she was getting a little carried away with the markers!

"You colou' p'etty." Earako said, doing her best to continue holding still. The older girl's praise had a definate effect on her, she held herself even more still than before, pretending that she was a statue, and not a person at all. She'd even be pretty like a statue when Indigo finished.
As the work on her other arm started, she carefully watched the movements of Indigo's markers. She looked so... cool! She couldn't wait to go to class and show her teacher how neat she was. The red seemed to stand out very brightly next to the red and white, and Earako definately liked the effect. "Mo'e red?" She suggested, a bit tentative. After all, she wasn't the artist. She didn't want to upset the other girl with her suggestion.

"Thank you! I promise this'll be really nice when I'm done." Without really looking down, Indigo shuffled through the markers with her lowers, picking out a blue one. She was about to exchange it for the red when Earako asked for more. Quickly, Indigo transfered the blue back to one of her lowers. "Sure thing! It really does look neat, doesn't it?"
Moving over a bit, she added more red swirlies to Earako's arm to match the ones she'd done on the other. Then some dots, and a little more black here and there. "Did you come for class, or did your dad just drop you off here?" she asked as she did, almost absently. "Sometimes Mom just leaves me here when Auntie Tee can't babysit..." Switching the markers around in her hands, she began adding red swirls up toward Earako's shoulders.
"Say, I could do your face, too! That would be really neat, if you wanna."

Earako watched in fascination as colour bloomed on her too pale skin. She looked so much prettier! Some day, she'd get tattoos like Kyle and Da', but until then, she was glad that Indigo was offering some colour. She just wished she could somehow keep it. "Yeah." She agreed. "I look 'ike a pi'ture." She thought she did... like something you'd find up on a wall in the coffee shop where Kyle worked.
"I go's to c'a**. I didn' wanna today." Smiling a bit shyly at the older girl, she decided that not getting to spend the day with her Da' wasn't so bad after all. "Bu' now I's glad."
"Face too!" She agreed, all enthusiasm, even though she knew it would tickle a lot. "I don' like bein' 'ite."

Mwahahahahaha! Indigo had--been given permission to further her coloring dominion. This was most excellent. "I dunno," she said, rummaging for a color that looked good with red and black among her markers. Glancing down briefly to do just that, she added, "I think being white would be neat! I mean, I like my spots and my 'tennas, but it would be sooooo cool if I could change colors any time I wanted to."
Picking out the orange marker, she looked up again, smiling brightly. "Ohhhh, is it class with Mr. Orpheus? He's my favoritest teacher. Last time I learned all about crawling around under stuff and looking for things." She paused, uncapping the marker and considering. "Oo--look up just a little?" Waiting for the younger girl to do just that, she then started in on orange and red dots on Earako's face. Dots rapidly turned into stripes, though, as Indigo attempted to imitate the makeup she'd seen someone wearing on the TV once.

She was right, the marker on her face did tickle. Biting her lip, Earako held as still as possible, allowing Indigo to continue her decorating. Just wait 'til the other kids saw her! They'd wish they'd had a chance to be drawn on too. And then when Da' got here to pick her up, she'd get to show him too.
"I 'ike him too." Earako replied, mumbling her words a bit do to the effort of keeping her face still.
He hadn't been able to leave. Not really. Oh, he'd gotten to his car, and started it up, even started to drive. But... thinking of the heartbroken look on Earako's face when he'd pushed her into the playroom had eaten away at him. He'd found himself turning his car around, driving back.
He just wanted to check on her, make sure she wasn't still upset. Michael figured he didn't even have to let her see him. He'd just glance into the play room real quick, and if everything was fine, he'd leave again. If not-- well, he'd burn that bridge when he got to it.
Striding down the hall, he reached the playroom quickly, and slowed down. Moving quietly into the doorway, he glanced in, scanning the room for his pale skinned daughter. And there she was, with a purple girl. And pale... well... it wasn't the word for her. She was absolutely covered in marker! Childish designs in black and red crawled up both her arms. And her face... that girl was drawing on her face!
"Earako! What the hell are you doing?" He snapped, striding into the playroom, arms crossed, expression grim.

Caught in the act! Indi had just been about to say something small and pleasant about Mr. Orpheus when the door creaked open and Earako's dad walked in. Then Indi was about to call a hello to him when he stormed over in a state she could distinctly recognize as "mad".
Her antennae cringed, and a moment later, the velvet worm did too, recapping the markers in a flurry of hands and ink. Uhm, uhm, what was she supposed to do? Usually when it was Mom she either curled up in a ball or screamed back and then felt really bad, but this was another not-Mom adult and she was s'posed to be respectful to them. "Uhm," she said aloud, before promptly hiding all the markers and all her hands behind her back.
"Nothin', Mr. ... uhm, Mister. I was just decorating her so she'd look pretty for class!" Okay, hopefully that would fly. If not, Indigo always supposed she could start crying hysterically. That might work, too.

Earako winced away from the sound of her Da's voice, wrapping her dark wings around herself as if she might be able to hide what they'd been up to. Of course, it was already too late for that, but the need to make the attempt was there. Da' never yelled at her... much. But he seemed about too now.
"You didn' say!" She managed, trying to stand up for, if not herself, then for Indigo. Her voice was nervous and fluttery, but her shoulders, somewhere under her wings, were squared, "You didn' say she couldn'."
Michael sighed, biting back his words as the purple girl and Earako cringed away from him. He didn't want to be the monster. He didn't want to be his father. But he was justified in his anger, wasn't he? He'd told her and told her, and she just didn't listen! When did punishment become reasonable? Where was the line between authority and cruelty?
"Come here, young lady." He said at last, keeping his tones low and measured. "We're going home, and getting you cleaned up. And if you're late for class, you'll just have to deal with the consiquences. It's time you learned to follow the spirit of the law and not just the letter."
He felt... tired. There was his daughter, looking at him like he was the bad guy. And maybe he was. Wasn't it all just a little harmless fun? But there had to be rules! "Say goodbye to your friend."

"B-but...it was my fault, honest!" Indigo blurted out, not liking the thought of her new friend getting in trouble. She promptly clapped two hands over her mouth after that, eyes agonized. Nor did she really want Michael yelling at her, since he seemed a lot like Mom got when she was angry. That would be a horrible thing to add to her already bad day.
A moment later she pulled her hands away from her mouth, gathering all four of them in front of her and looking down at her bare toes. "'M sorry. For making you upset--please don't make her late to class, mister! They don't like it when that happens." She cringed with her antennae, drawing them back toward her head while still looking down.

"No, Da'. No! 's my fau't." Earako objected, shaking her head in denial of Indigo's words. Indigo had been so very nice to her. And her Da'... her Da' was wrong. He shouldn't be mad when they were just playing. When she hadn't said they couldn't. Her wings opened, extending to their full length, as if by taking up space she might keep his attention just on her. "'s me."
Michael looked back and forth between the two girls. His pale defiant daughter, showing a stubborn streak tha was only just starting to appear, and the colourful older girl, looking fearful yet insistant.
Loyalty. Above all else, Loyalty. It was what he ran on, what he lived for.
And he was going to punish his little girl for showing it? Except... that wasn't the issue. But it'd become it, now that each girl seemed so determined to stand up for the other. He wanted to smile. He wanted yell. He wasn't sure which to do.
He wasn't cut out to be a ********." He muttered, shutting his eyes, as if the whole scene was just a trick of the light, to be chased away by blinking. "Earako, you go to the bathroom to get cleaned up. I'll be here to pick you up after class."
"T'anks Da'." She ran up to him, wrapping her small arms around his leg before turning to wave an enthusiastic goodbye to Indigo. "I'll see you. La'er. Bye!" She was quick to rush out the door toward the bathroom, anxious to get away before her Da' changed his mind again.

Well, that had--sort of worked? Indigo waved an upper and called out, "See you!" to Earako as the other girl departed, apparently not grounded or kept home from classes for the day. Her face lost its smile, though, as she looked back at Michael. She clasped all four of her hands before her then, looking down at her bare toes, antennae drooping as she doodled with foot on the carpet.
Finally, she cleared her throat in a way that sounded painfully feigned. "Erm--th-thank you? F-for not getting too angry at her," she managed, at last.
