The broom twitched a bit in the grass then jerked roughly to the side in the efforts to obey her command before thwacking harshly against her shin!
She inhaled sharply and bit down hard on her lip, lifting her knee to her chest so she could wrap her hands against the place that now rang with pain.
Tears welled up in her eyes before she stomped her foot down and became overwhelmed with determination. She swallowed hard to bite back the throbbing in her shin and shove back her tears. Her hand thrusted back into place above the broom and she practically growled.
"Up!" Another jerk, but it didn't do much more than roll over a few blades of grass this time.
"Up!"
This time the broom lifted, but remained at a hover at just a few inches off the ground. At least it was something, right? Tristan picked it up and grumbled a bit at it as she leaned over to rub the pain on her shin away. She hoped that getting a bruise via a broom would be the worst of her problems this lesson....

To say that Sara was excited was an understatement. She skipped about as she moved with her classmates out to the schoolyard and marveled her eyes upon the row of brooms just waiting to be ridden!
She held back the urge to clap all giddy like when the Professor gave them the reigns, so to speak. To Sara, this was just another day at the farm, only during one of the special days when they got a new horse or cow to add to their stock.
"Man..." Sara began at a half whisper, speaking to no one in particular. "... This broom ridin' stuff sounds like fun! Kinda feels like the first time my Grandpappy taught me how ta ride his prized bull!"
She looked around and watched as other students started calling out to their brooms and fell into formation beside a broom that had no one claiming it yet. She listened a moment, gathering the idea that all you had to do was say 'Up!' to get the broom to come to you.
"Gee..." she half chuckled. "This all seems easier than when I tried to teach Ol' Rusty how ta sit!"
She stretched out her arm and grinned. "Up!"

"Whoa!"
Sara's broom lifted swiftly into her hand, much like their Professor's did!
"Well, if that don't beat all!" she proclaimed and marveled at the broom where she caught it. Now she was smiling brightly. "I guess I do got some magic in me, after all!"
She giggled a bit and leaned to see if there was something else they needed to be doing, but the Professor still seemed to be waiting on everyone else to get their brooms.
Fine by Sara! She hugged her broom, happy that she was able to do the first part so easily then idly wondered what flying would actually feel like! She imaged it would seem much like riding a horse or bull, but... with a smaller saddle and muuuuuuuuch higher up.... Her grin widened... She definitely couldn't wait to try!!

Once the instructor had given the first step, Alois watched as student after student either succeeded in their broom raising or failed. He had flinched when he'd heard the smack of a broom against human bone. It had made him a bit nervous to try it, but he needed to do it! He was sure a couple of smacks to the body wouldn't hurt him.
Pulling a loose string from his sleeve, he turned his head to the broom he had chosen. It was a ragged looking thing that seemed to have been dropped from a very tall building. His pride overcame his fear as he held out his hand and spoke the magic words.
"Up!"

Feeling a hit straight to his perfection, he stared at the broom as it decided to stay put on the ground. He quickly spoke the word again, "Up!" A little rolling but nothing too promising. This got Alois' anger rolling in him and he decided, with a not too clear head, to kick his broom with full force.
"Stupi-" Alois was cut off as the broom rose from the ground and shot under him, hard. This caused the boy to squeak as he felt pain surge through him. But the broom had not finished yet! The broom, as Alois tried to hold onto it and his manhood, rose high in the air and slammed down into the ground. He had hit the ground with enough force to knock his breath away, again. He held back the tears that he knew wanted to come out and just lay on the ground. He waited for the cry of the teacher and the laughter of the students. This was a flying experience he was never going to forget.
Looking up from his fetal position, he spotted the broom and flinched away from it. He was now terrified of them and didn't know if he could ever pick up a broom again.

Cecilia had thought that what Lia had done was bad, she was completely unprepared as another Ravenclaw grabbed his broom, had his broom decide to rebel, and knocked him on the ground. "Professor!" Cecilia cried before running over to the blonde boy. "Are you alright?" She inquired, holding out her hand to help him up.
Professor Drake hurried over to the boy, "Is anything broken?" She demanded, kneeling down near Alois. Despite being severely shocked and afraid, he looked fine. "Do you need to go to the infirmary?" She inquired, this time softly. This wasn't the time to be stern, the boy looked terrified enough as it is.
Professor Drake hadn't expected someone to be injured so early in the game--they were just trying to lift their brooms up! Clumsy kids... She thought worriedly, waiting for some sort of response out of Alois.

Lysander Hawkins was greatly looking forward to flying, and kept his ears alert to anything about flying he didn't already know. Like his other Ravenclaw year-mates, Lysander had been reading up on flying, anything he could get his hands on. Broomstick handling, flight patterns, air currents, and quidditch plays were swirling in a jumbled mess in his head, and he couldn't help but want to learn more. Flying! So exciting!
Lysander made himself comfortable in his position next to a rather unfortunate looking broom, and his head snapped up to the professor when she started teaching. But her words went in one ear and out the other. He knew what to do- he'd read all about it. And just being outside, feeling the wind in his hair and, for the brief moment he was moving it's position, the smooth wood of the broomstick in his hand, it was too much to take. His concentration suffered and his mind shot off faster than a seeker after a snitch.
He began to imagine the perfection of flying and soon a dream-like smile affixed itself to his face and he ended up staring unseeingly at the Hufflepuff across from him. He was distracted, however, when the boy beside him jerked and fell to the ground. Lysander's mouth opened with a gasp and, for a moment, he could only stare.
"A-Alois, you..." He gaped some more, and drew back as a girl called for the professor. He inched away from his roommate slightly, to give the professor some room, and looked down at his own broom. Was he just suppose to continue his lesson? Warily, he lifted his hand slightly to the now completely frighting looking broom. He opened his mouth to command the broom, but snapped his jaw shut quickly. He shuffled his legs closer together, and shot another worried glance at Alois. Better safe then sorry. Preparing himself, he took in a deep breath and held it for a bit, releasing the air with his next word. "Up."

Aeron didn't quite understand what the fuss was all about. Yes flying was exciting but it didn't seem worth getting your knickers in a knot. Everyone would learn eventually and those who didn't always had floo powder or apparition to get around. Flying seemed a little old fashioned actually now that he thought about it.
Still the day was nice and he always preferred outdoor lessons to those held inside the castle. Professor Drake was a little intimidating, though it was hard to imagine what she expected as to rough housing from Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw. He listened attentively, fingering the small metal charm about his neck. It didn't even sound all that hard. As the children were given leave he held his hand out to the broom and spoke. "Up."

The broom wiggled a little bit on the ground but his focus was lost as another student was violently attacked by his own broom. Aeron winced and half looked away. It hadn't seemed pleasant at all and he couldn't blame the kid for being embarassed, especially as the rumored stern teacher knelt beside him and spoke in a quiet voice.
He looked back at the broom next to him. Maybe it was a good thing it didn't immediately leap into his hands. He found himself rather fine with leaving it on the ground.

Anya had been late and as such was trying to blend into the scenery behind her fellow classmates. She knew her father had tried to teach her so that she was ahead of the other kids but she highly doubted it would work for her on command. After all look how many were getting hurt. Taking a deep breath she stared at the broom after a moment she barely managed to raise her voice above a whisper. "Up." She winced just in case it hit her

Anya peeked out slowly only to pout as her broom stayed on the ground. Feeling slightly dejected she spoke a bit firmer. "Up." She watched again this time noticing the broom twitch slightly lifting a few inches off the ground.
She could do this! Standing straight she stared at the broom and reached her hand out to her side. "Up!" Finally the broom rose into the air and thudded against her hand. She squealed in excitement, before turning 3 shades of red and looked around hoping no one had heard her.

Lysander was very surprised when, instead of attacking him like other's were doing, or even just rolling on the ground, the broom instead rose smoothly and swiftly to his outstretched hand with no discernible problem at all. He looked back to the boy on the ground, and gripped the broom tighter. Why was it so easy for him, but so violent for Alios? He felt as though he had somehow betrayed his roommate, though he really hadn't done anything.
Hearing an girlish squeal, he looked down the line to the over-eager Hufflepuff girl. Trying to take his mind off broomstick attacks, his face morphed slowly into a grin. "A little excited, are we?" He shot her a quick smirk (as it's terribly hard to wink at people with only one eye), as though her blushing face was a secret no one else could see. "Don't worry, I won't tell."

Jericho wasn't really sure what to expect when he came out onto the field with the other children. He didn't see what the fuss was about; it wasn't as though First Years would be allowed to fly all that much anyway. The most flying Hogwarts students did, it seemed, was while playing Quidditch - a sport that was not likely to support amateurs when it had older, more experienced students to play. Besides, the Hufflepuff student didn't really plan on ever trying out for his house's team.
Nevertheless, Flight Class was yet another necessary subject on his schedule. Jeri always tried to do his best in every one of his classes and this would be no exception. This by no means meant that he was a perfect student, however. Like the average kid his age, he got late, forgot assignments, and fell asleep during lectures. Once in a while he would miss-read a spell or mess up the ingredients in a potion, but that didn't keep him from working hard.
The boy was of the mindset that while natural talent was nice, those who lacked it could still succeed if they made the effort. As long as there was a chance, he would take it. While Jeri wasn't particularly brave, intelligent, or ambitious, he was patient enough to take his time and have faith that his commitment and diligence would eventually pay off. As he'd once read somewhere, while talent could get you far, hard work could get you anywhere.
And so, it was a steady hand that Jericho chose a standard school broom and a steady hand that he positioned over it as it lay on the ground beside him. In a serious, yet quiet voice, he commanded, "Up."
