It seemed it was just meant to be, the sound of laughter, loud and obvious, reverberating all the way to the respitblock walls. His friend had tried to be considerate in biting back his own, but Aprife was having none of it, lightyears away from being offended by the thought that his lusus was small and scrawny and pretty damn useless unless Alternia suddenly starting hosting garden shows. It wasn't as if he didn't appreciate his dad, he did, and they got along well when both of them weren't being too flighty to spend any time together. But he never would know where Bumbs got off giving him lectures about socialization when said bee couldn't even hold a proper conversation with a hive plant.

As soon as the goggles were lowered from his eyes, they were already forgotten, and fell a short distance back to the pile while the yellowblood bit his lip to end the laughter and stood. "I'm not so sure. I mean he's got that stinger, but almost never uses it." Though, he supposed shortly, Bumbs had taught him some things and protected him somehow. Maybe that butt-wiggle-bluff really did have merit to it, if only a little. Enough to chase away a few trolls who had tried to pick on Aprife in his younger sweeps. Wait, that had probably been the lusii of the other trolls ushering them away, instead. Ehh, he gave his guardian the benefit of the doubt.

If there was one thing he was sure of, it was that even if Arcus was cool as s**t (he definitely was), he wouldn't trade his own lusus for anything. Okay, okay, maybe he'd be all over a one-night parent swap, but Bumbs really was one of the few things, among trolls and creatures and nearly anything else, that the yellowblood showed much of a commitment to.

When the windows were finally open, the view called him almost immediately towards, but a sudden can flew across his path, quick eyes darted to follow, and dang, that snake really was impressive, if still a little intimidating, as he hissed his displeasure and settled his head on the floor. There was no way the net Aprife had at home, the tiny one he used to play catch-a-lusus with the bumblebee, would be anything but a minor and very pitiful distraction for his friend's lusus.

Shaking his head, he continued to the windows, and fingers curled excitedly against the wall as he peered out over the view, something he'd never quite seen before now. He liked to look out at the buildings in New Hemisect, but this certainly was five or six tiers above that on the awe-inspiring scale. "Miss it? You used to live in a hivestem?" Without missing a beat, he was interested in the room again, or more accurately the troll now parked near the desk, swinging that umbrella unknowingly. "I collect, I dunno, shoes and paper and all that." He left out the part about notebooks full of stalkerish biographies and little plush bee toys. "It must be nice to have more room to keep all your stuff, hivestems aren't very big. If you really did move out here that must've been great. Right?" It was obvious he was prying as he sidestepped towards the blueblood for only a moment before full-on turning and closing the distance between them. It was kinda strange the way he held his hands out in front of him as he did, just slightly, but it almost looked like he meant to literally snatch the knowledge he wanted right out of Zeffer's figurative hands.

"Maybe that's a good thing. Arcus has fangs, too, but it's been a long time since he's had to bite anyone. We're old enough to kick a** on our own, that's for sure." Zeffer observed smugly, glancing over at his reptilian caretaker. He was more of a hive guardian now than anything, and Zeffer was just fine with that, since he was so often away from home. The swinging umbrella in his hands finally slowed to a stop as he took a moment to enjoy the view with Aprife, sneering a little at what a clear night it was. Only a few little fluffy ones out on the horizon, not that his weather predictions had been very different.

"Yeah, I did. Never told you so? I moved out here from New Hemisect when I was pretty young." He gave a sharky smirk as Aprife revealed his own interests, having the feeling that he was leaving s**t out. He wanted to tease him for it, but the next comment had him scoffing. "Yeah, it's pretty great. I love my hive, but I do miss the city sometimes. You say that like you think I'm lying, though." His grin sharpened and he tapped the umbrella against the back of Aprife's legs before moving away to a closet near his recuperacoon. The strike was nowhere near enough to cause any level of pain, more aimed at making the yellowblood jump.

"Some pretty crazy s**t happened before I moved out here, but I ramble way too much. I'm sure you wouldn't be interested." He grinned, biting his lip as he let the umbrella fall. He opened the closet to reveal a whole array of weird looking gadgets, immediately picking one of them up and beginning to fiddle with it. Of course, they were all related to measuring the weather, but he was really more interested in Aprife's reaction, turning the dial on a lightning detector as he waited for his response.

"What?" There was an edge of joking indignation in his voice, but the expression he wore hardly matched anything even vaguely upset. "I would never think you were lying." Never, not the friend who had taught him how to beat the system and take things without paying. Of course not. Though honestly, he believed the blueblood. It was simply a practiced tone, one that came without any thought now, whenever he was digging for information. There were two reactions he often got when trolls assumed themselves accused; they either shut down completely or fought back, revealing way more than they would have normally. It happened quite a bit, really, getting flustered and offended and defensive. Aprife always used that to his benefit.

So, of course he believed him, and was quite interested in learning more. It wasn't everyday that someone picked up and moved, it was something that took real effort. Why? he wondered. What could have been so significant...? A tap against his legs drew him back to the moment, startling him enough that one knee buckled and he wobbled ominously, but stayed standing. In fact, he was already slinking up to Zeffer's side, eyeing the contents of the closet, but thinking nothing of them.

This was new. His friend was dangling the information right in front of his face, not clamming up, but not spilling his guts, either. No no, the yellowblood thought, you won't get away that easily.

"Hey man, we're friends, of course I'm interested." He tried not to sound too much like a kid that wasn't getting his way. Apparently he had been right about something significant, and the thought only intrigued him more. "You can trust me, right?" He was willing to do quite close to anything to get what he wanted, but he never would have guessed that 'old enough to kick a** on our own' could possibly foreshadow anything beyond chatting about their guardians.

Zeffer could tell that Aprife was thinking, that weasely little mind of his working away, no doubt, toward figuring out how to get the information he wanted. Thw witheld info wasn't even that big of a deal, in Zeffer's opinion, but it was a rather exciting story and he did like to torment his friends. He put down the gadget he'd been messing around with (no doubt something to measure humidity or air pressure or something related to the weather) and turned to cross his arms, smirking toothily.

"Sure I trust you, but I dunno if this is just something I wanna be spouting for no reason." He said in a thoughtful way, almost over-exaggerating the tone. "I have an idea. We should have a little match." His grin grew wider, sharkier. It always had to be a game with the little b*****d, didn't it? He wasn't about to give a whole story away for free, though, no sir, and was too interested in Aprife's reaction to his suggestion anyway. Would he go for it, or would he p***y out? Something told Zeffer that Aprife would go pretty damn far to get the juicy gossip he always seemed to thirst for.

"I've been wanting to spar with you ever since the Battle Royale. How about it? Kick my a** and I'll tell you about how I ended up out here." He strutted towards Aprife, reaching down to unhook a baton and proceeding to toss it shortly, catching the handle every time.

That one caught him off guard. In fact, he was backpedalling cautiously, eyes following the swing of that stunbaton through the air, remembering. The battle royale sure did seem like a long time ago now, but it would be hard to forget the feeling of a good whack with more than a few volts accompanying it. In the time he'd known Zeffer, though, quite a few things had happened. It used to be he'd run from a fight sweeps before he'd walk right into one. He was a bit different now, though. Experience had taught him that sometimes fighting was simply a means to an end and maybe, contrary to his own beliefs about himself, he was more suited to it than he'd thought.

Aprife stopped backing away then, even if he still looked a little unsure. "Gonna try and steal my title?" he joked, knowing that likely had nothing to do with it. In that moment he was nervous, but there was a prickling anticipation in his stomach. If this is what it would take to get the goods, he'd give it a go, and he'd win. Confidence would be his true weapon.

"Okay, but if I win, you better tell me everything." As if he were still a little wary, he stepped backwards a few more paces towards the hatch that lead back out instead of turning to walk normally. "And if you win-?" Uh oh, Aprife bit his lip suddenly. It had been rather thoughtless, asking Zeffer what he'd want in return for a victory on his part. The yellowblood hoped he didn't seek to claim anything too extreme. Not that he would lose, of course.

"Heh. I really think I'd have had a damn good chance if it hadn't been for that green-blooded b***h cutting me down. We should have tag teamed her." Zeffer sneered, skirting the very edge of bitterness, though there was no real bite behind the words. It had been an experience, nothing more, he'd never been that huge of a glory hound, and most important of all, it was in the past. He clipped the baton back onto his belt and headed for the trap door exit, smirking wickedly as Aprife gave his ascent to the idea.

"That's what I like to hear. Let's go then, might as well go outside for it." He stooped to drop down into the corridor after Arcus had backed up. Unfortunately they would have to go back down the stairs on foot as his massive lusus started to retreat. "If I win? Hm." Zeffer hadn't thought of that, too preoccupied with the idea of sparring. "I'll think about it. Let's go!"

Aprife felt a little bad at that, even if you couldn't see it on his face. "Next time, man." The two of them probably would make a pretty good team. In fact, that time back in the alley, as well as the adventures of team primary, had already proven that. The yellowblood was starting to think that no matter how things went, if he stuck with Zeffer, situations like this, and those in the past, would not be at all rare or unusual. There were pros and cons.

"Alright, alright, here I come," he called, finally free from hesitation now that the baton was temporarily holstered and his friend was already dropping out of the room. Aprife thought for sure that whatever this secret was he was sparring for was, it would be worth it. The idea had him excited enough to remain unruffled by the fact that he wouldn't know what the blueblood wanted in return until after he lost, if he lost... There was no way he'd lose. "Fine, but it better not be anything stupid!" He laughed as he slipped out of the room, making quickly for the stairs like he had no problem with taking them on his own.
