Remarque watched for a moment longer and then shrugged. He didn’t like the idea of turning his back on any enemy, but there was nothing to gain by further fighting Camelot. Let Leto have her revenge with him. “Then perhaps you and I have more in common than you’d like, Knight.”

Remarque never really thought of himself as a hero. He did bad things, and he was aware of it. But that was a choice he made. It had nothing to do with Chaos, nothing to do with the Dark Mirror Senshi. Remarque liked to pick fights, liked to play mind games, liked to bully people, liked to put them in their place.

He wasn’t a saint by any means, and for as much as he could twist the truth, that was a claim he’d never bother to make. But he still had a specific taste in targets.

Perhaps the other Dark Mirror Senshi didn’t share in his taste for the unsavory, but Remarque didn’t care. Let them do as they pleased. He had his reasoning for targeting criminals. It wasn’t all altruistic—it was more of an adrenaline rush, more dangerous, more profitable.

He was cleaning up the streets, in his own little way, and feeding his ego while filling his pockets. Not that he had many qualms over draining energy from the average, law-abiding citizen, but he still had preferences.

“Only, your idea of evil seems a little backwards.”

He turned, then; it seemed like a good note to leave on. As much as he’d love to get in another blow on Camelot, the fact that he was decked out in armor made it a little difficult to make a plan of attack. He didn’t want to risk breaking bones or scraping off his skin; no knight wasn’t worth that.

Kyuseisha no Hikari

Camelot felt like a fool. He hated himself for his childish behavior, and knew now where his son, Nathan, got it from. Clearly he was not as mature as he would like to think himself, regardless of just turning forty. He was no more an adult, no more in a place to judge, than any of the kids that were made into soldiers for this war.

What was he doing?

Here he was, picking a battle he did not even want to win. A young man who could have done such good in his life, reduced to nothing but a target for Camelot to take his aggression on. It was not fair, and it was unprovoked, for the most part. And even if the boy had been insulting him in the worst way, throwing stones and trying to fight him, that wouldn't have made it any better.

Camelot was losing himself.

Remarque was very much like Camelot was, in his youth. He was very much like Nathan was now, in his ways. It reminded Camelot of his son, of his life, and of the things he was supposed to be fighting for. It also dragged out these negative feelings he was having no success fighting off.

He had not excuse for himself, and he did not flinch as the dark senshi turned. He let the other go, not offering any further comments. Unable to. He had to stop this, had to find his way back to what he knew in his heart was the right place for him.

But what would it take?
