He was now holding two short pieces of wood.
A large fire type was staring him down.
The last time there had been a big fire type around his back had been rather literally cooked, and the last time he had gone toe to toe with a pokemon he had been beaten to a bloody pulp in a couple of minutes and that pokemon had been deliberately drawing it out.
Colour draining from his face Aulus started to back up, past nightmares mingling with his present fears and freezing his mind.
A sudden shriek and a flurry of wings snapped him out of his horrified trance, and gave him enough sense to release his own pokemon. "Get it!" With this simple command he dropped the shattered pieces of his staff and dived and rolled aside, coming back to his feet with his eyes trained on the dark fire type, his heart racing and hands shaking. If it was still focused on him, he couldn't go over to Claire. He really hoped it wasn't still focused on him, that the other pokemon could distract it. He didn't want this to happen again.
Distract was exactly what Tortie intended to do, along with making the thing really suffer for threatening her trainer. she barked to her comrades, flinging herself forward with a Bite attack aimed at the fire type's sinuous neck.
Rumbling agreement Char squared up to the other Charizard, preparing to put himself between it and either his Master or the Lady if he tried to go after them again.
Giving a loud screech Red shot a deadly accurate Aerial Ace at the enemy, hoping that Odette noticed her actions rather than her still short crest.
Paul stared up at the fire type, squealed in terror, and ducked behind Char. Once he felt (relatively) safe he peeked out and aimed a Disable at the horrible probably bug eating monster.
As for the last member of the party... he laughed. he exclaimed. more fun? More spectators!> Chuckling to himself again Discord executed a Double Team, sending copies of himself out in a ring around the battling pokemon. The copies, and the snake himself, then started to thump their tails on the ground in appreciation of the fine entertainment before them.

Fortunately for Aulus, the sudden rush and influx of such a wide variety of pokemon briefly bewildered the angry Charizard - there was a Pidgeot digging into his back and trying to peck at his head, there was a Pikachu hanging off his wings by the teeth, another Charizard in front of him--a second Pidgeot sent some attack that glanced off the back of his neck and head, causing him to stumble back a step, but he snaked his head out to roar at it--
--in time to feel a set of fangs rake across his neck. With another roar, he lashed out with one arm while twisting his neck down to try to sink his fiery fangs into the patched Absol that had just attacked him. The humans may well have ceased to exist at this point.
Artemis jumped back to her feet and looked around with a whine, her ears back as she whipped her head around to try to see where the dark ball had gone to.. There! With a yip, she bounded off after the still-rolling ball, as it headed off to a far corner of the room.
Claire didn't hear Artemis, and she barely heard the other pokemon. All she could do was stare, partially open-mouthed at the horrible thing that was inside the ball she'd been given. Why... Why did they think she needed this? It seemed more a monster than a pokemon.. Her uninjured hand gripped her bloody arm numbly as she took another couple of steps back, safely away from the fighting pokemon. It couldn't take much of this, could it? Certainly not - they wouldn't give her such an unruly pokemon if it were terribly powerful. Absolutely not - they'd likely destroy it, or do something to its head to force it to be less... Bloodthirsty.

The pokemon had it covered.
With another glance at the battle Aulus hastened over to Claire. She was bleeding. Asking her if she was alright would be stupid and so he didn't. Instead he crouched down and turned his attention onto Artemis, holding his hand out towards her, hoping she'd bring the ball swiftly so that the Charizard could be contained again.
The fire type might be tough, but she was tougher. Snarling indistinctly Tortie sank her teeth deeper into her opponent’s neck while Red used another Aerial Ace. Paul - still cowering - tried to Disable another of the horrible beast's moves, and Char remained still but alert for any attack on the humans.
Discord continued to be Discord; applause finished the snake and its illusions had formed an impromptu cheer squad. Who they were rooting for was not entirely clear.

With a Pidgeot on his back, an Absol on his neck, a Pikachu on his wing, a second Pidgeot sending attacks at him, and the most obnoxious Serperior taunting him, the Charizard gave another roar as he started slashing at anything within reach with a Dragon Claw attack on his way down. He landed on his dark belly with a heavy thud on the floor, and despite being mostly pinned and almost unconscious, he continued to snarl menacingly and to snap his fiery jaws at anything he could reach - Tortie and Char's leg happened to be closest.
As soon as Aulus arrived at her side, Claire couldn't help but lean towards him instinctively. Luckily for all of them, Artemis managed to grab the ball in her mouth and bounded back as quick as she could. Aulus looked much more expectant than Claire, so the Growlithe deposited the dark ball in his outstretched hand - but not without a confused whine.

As the Charizard crashed to the ground Tortie jumped aside to avoid being squashed, taking the Dragon Claw across her belly for her trouble. Snarling furiously she jumped forward again and sank her teeth into its flesh again. A moment later its teeth plunged into her leg, burning her painfully. She didn't have to hold on much longer though, they almost had it!
She didn't have to wait much longer at all in fact; Aulus grabbed the dark ball as Artemis brought it over and levelled it at the fallen Charizard, pressing the button to pull it back inside the black and grey sphere.

The Charizard was withdrawn successfully - not without one more roar for good measure - and while the ball wiggled furiously (albeit rather weakly) in his hand, it didn't reopen. Either he was too weak to let himself out, or the labs had been smart and had placed a lock on his ball to prevent escape. Probably the latter.
As Odette and Zeus returned to Claire's side, the agent was mostly staring at the dark ball in Aulus's hand. She finally tore her gaze from it when the Pikachu nudged her hand, and she glanced at him briefly before focusing on her injured arm. It looked... awful and it was throbbing (the adrenaline still coursing through her was probably numbing the pain quite a lot), but all in all she was grateful it was still in one piece.
And not dead. That was very important.
"Well," she finally said after a few tense, silent moments, "that was..." Awful? Horrible? Terrifying? "Interesting." Insert pause. "I should probably uh.. go to the infirmary."

Hands still shaking somewhat Aulus stared at the pokeball he clutched in silence. Got it. It was gone. Over. Still trying to get out, but not able to. He shook himself and clipped the horrible thing to his belt; give it back to Claire later.
Claire.
Oh s**t.
Suddenly panicking again he looked down at her arm. That was not good. "Y-yea," he managed, "C'mon, I'll carry you." Her legs hadn't been damaged, but she'd probably be shaky, and she might faint or something and... and that thing could have killed her. Who the hell had assigned that thing to her with no warning? He was going to find them, and Explain his Displeasure. Repeatedly. With a blunt instrument.
After quickly returning all of his pokemon (with a glare for Discord's continued antics), he turned back to Claire. "Is... that alright? I mean. Carrying you." He should have protected her, should have already had his pokemon out! He knew what Dark Balls did to pokemon, they'd even just been discussing what he thought of them because of it, but he hadn't been bright enough to act on his misgivings and now Claire was hurt. He just couldn't ever do anything right, could he?

The fact that Aulus was openly panicking (although perhaps not visibly so) actually sort of helped Claire - she'd been in Team Rocket long enough, and Galactic longer than that, to have it ingrained into her to keep her head in stressful situations. While she hadn't done a good job thus far - she could have, should have done a lot more preparation, she should've known something like this would happen, she could have prevented the entire thing if she hadn't been so stupid - the instinct was kicking in. The threat was gone but she was still injured, and it wasn't any time to panic.
That didn't mean she wasn't still extremely shaken up, of course, but at least she could think straight.
"Yeah, that's alri.. Wait, no, you don't need to carry me," she insisted as she worked backwards on the things he'd said - okay, so she was thinking mostly straight - while also returning all her pokemon, and then managed to stand. Her legs weren't injured at all, only her arm. "I can walk just fine." Shaky, but fine.
Luckily the walk wasn't too long - expedited and simplified by elevators - and soon enough they were in front of the infirmary. "I hope this doesn't take too long.." Did Aulus have a shift soon? Did he have one earlier? She couldn't remember anymore. "I'll send you a message when I'm done if you can't wait, or don't want to," she offered as a random nurse appeared and started fussing over her.. Why would he want to sit out here and wait for her to be done? Waiting was horribly boring. Infirmaries were horribly boring as well, so after Aulus's response (the nurse was understandably impatient), Claire was ushered into another room the aforementioned random nurse.

He accepted her assertion only reluctantly, and hovered beside her as they walked to the infirmary. Stupid, stupid stupid! He felt stupid for more than just not letting his pokemon out, he felt stupid for being affected like this. That moment of hot breath on him, of those mad eyes, of there is nothing you can do, you are small and weak and you cannot get away! He hadn't frozen up for long, but he hated that he'd frozen at all. He had to be stronger than that, had to get over himself, he was being stupid!
"I'll wait," he responded quickly when asked, "I'll be just out here."
When Claire and the nurse disappeared he walked slowly over to a chair and sank down into it, covering his face with his hands and trying to calm down.
It was a lot easier said than done.
