Finally, one of the errant bullets hit its mark.

"AHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Nick cried out in pain, immediately falling to the ground as a burning pain surged through his leg. The bullet impacted just below his knee, amazingly missing the bone, but causing a lot of damage, ripping flesh and muscles. Nick was deep in an the alley, too far for any pedestrian to see and witness what was about to happen. The Purifiers, however, were just close enough to see where he was, to see Nick crawling away further into the alley, and backing himself against the wall. That was it, Nick had nowhere to go. Backed against a wall with an army of the Purifier foot soldiers looming down on him. Nick would try to throw up ice walls to block their paths, but he was exhausted from running nearly 2 miles through the city in record time, and his walls were weak and easily hurdled or knocked over completely. Each attempt to use his powers got the Purifiers even more riled up and furious. Now, the Purifiers were just a few feet away from him, approaching menacingly with various weapons from baseball bats to crowbars to lengths of chain. Nick stopped trying to escape, he resigned that it was a futile endeavor in the first place.

"Damnit..."

After a brief detour by the headquarters and home of the Fantastic Four and the Future Foundation, which took longer than the elder Web Slinger had expected with Reed Richards enlisting Peter to help with one of the myriad experiments he had ongoing at any moment, the pair of Parkers were once again on their way...riding in style as they caught a ride in the Fantasticar!

As the Spider-Men, along with Mr. Fantastic, flew over the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Ben suddenly grabbed the sides of his head and groaned, before looking every which way in an apparent panic.

"
What's the matter, Ben?", Spider-Man asked in concern as his nephew was freaking out. "Is something wrong?"

"My head...", replied the Scarlet Spider as he continued thrashing around in the back seat. "It feels like there are a million tiny fire ants crawling around on my brain"

"
That sounds pretty much like my spider-sense, a sort of sixth sense that my clones and I have that alerts us to danger. Looks like you've got it, too. Funny, though...I haven't had a peep out of mine all day."

"Well, how do you make it stop? It HURTS!", Ben cried, absolutely terrified of this new and unfamiliar sensation. Suddenly, his eyes went wide as saucers as an image flashed in his mind. "I see something! It looked like there was a pale skinned guy cornered in an alley..."

"
Okay, calm down kiddo," Spidey said reassuringly. "The intensity of the reaction varies, depending on the severity of the threat, and ranges from a little tickle to feeling like your skull is on fire. It looks like yours might be more sensitive than mine, like your dad's was, since it usually only responds to personal danger...he mentioned seeing visions when his spider-sense went off. Did you see anything else?"

"No, but I think I recognize that alley..." Ben said as he released his safety harness, finally coming to an understanding about what was going on in his head. "It's not too far from where we stopped that bank job a little while ago! I'm going over there!"

With that, Ben leaped out of the moving -and airborne- vehicle, and quickly snagged the nearest building with a web line, rushing headlong into action without even considering the fact that he only had a basic grasp of his abilities, and no real idea of what he might be getting himself into!

Viktoria lowered her gun after she was absolutely certain her bullet had met its intended target from how Nick Kelvin screamed and dropped to the ground, clutching his knee as what she could only imagine was a searing pain reverberated up his leg. She let a grin work its way onto her previously inexpressive face and descended from her perch atop the SUV, continuing down the little alley toward her prey ahead of the Purifier masses that were sure to arrive any minute and ask for the outed mutant’s life in exchange for their troubles. Viktoria slowly began to close in on her target despite having to constantly punch her way through his flimsy ice wall defenses and was prepared to make the kill shot when she heard the turmoil of the Purifier crowd grow louder behind her. She let a low growl slip from her mouth as she stared the younger Kelvin down with her piercing green eyes, livid that her boss had attracted such attention to his son. While Viktoria understood that an example needed to be made, an assassin’s work was best done in secret, free from the prying eyes of an angry mob.

I’ll handle you in just a moment, Nick. Unless you want a matching set for that knee of yours before I finish my job, I suggest remaining still.

Viktoria wheeled around before Nick could give an answer and stomped to a spot a few feet away from which she could face the crowd that came to steal her job. Without blinking twice or giving thought to how the crowd would react, she raised her Beretta and fired one, two, three shots into the air then left her arm raised as the crowd scrambled from the sudden discharge of ammo. Viktoria raised her voice so much so that her thick German accent echoed off the brick walls of the alley, making sure that the crowd wouldn’t miss her message.

This is my kill! Leave this to me! Would you have me disobey Nathaniel Kelvin himself? Do you not respect your leader, you heathen? Then unless you want to be branded a traitor and suffer a similar fate, I advise getting out of my way!

Viktoria let out a harsh yell and waved her gun around again before turning back to Kelvin as she’d promised. She spared a moment or two to reload ammo from the stash she had in her jacket since she had wasted so much already. Viktoria aimed her gun and prepared to fulfill her orders from Kelvin.

Nick glared up at his captor with disdain. He couldn't believe that after hiding this for seven years, a stupid tugofwar set him off and revealed him for what he was, right in front of his father. It was careless, and now he was going to pay with his life. He couldn't move his left leg without searing pain surging through him again, and so he was forced to watch this woman reload her weapon, and he used the last of his mitant energy to wrap ice around the wound to keep himself from bleeding out while he waited. It was almost funny, and he couldn't help but chuckle.

"Heheh...wouldn't want to deprive the Purifiers of their kill, would I? Why don't you just load the damn bullet in the chamber and stop wasting my time beautiful? Or do you think you need the full magazine to kill me?"

"I'm flattered, Kelvin. Really, I am."

Viktoria allowed herself to chuckle at her prey's humor, feeling that she owed him that much in his last moments. She had chosen to load her ammo like this because while she only needed one bullet for the job, there would likely be need for more to disperse the crowd behind her and escape before she could be caught. Viktoria knew she wasn't obliged to give the young Kelvin her reasons for stalling like this but she figured she could at least indulge the boy before his death.

"Of course I only need one shot to finish you off. The rest are just insurance that I can get out of here after I'm done. I have to get out of here somehow, don't I? I might as well reload while I have the chance. Besides, the more I stall, the more you squirm and I find that...entertaining."

She might be a gun-totting assassin intent on killing him and collecting her fee, but Nick had to admit, she had a pretty face. That, and she was fun to mess with. Hell, if he was going to die, he might as well have some fun. Maybe that was the blood loss talking. Nick's body was beginning to warm up again, and color was returning to his body. His hair defrosting, and his eyes returning to his normal color. This was an aspect of his powers he had no control over quite yet, his body temperature turning to absolute zero once he began using his abilities.

"Do you just like to hear yourself talk or are you just practicing your 'bad girl' voice, because if you wanna keep talking and not shoot me, i'm good with that." He said with a stupid grin.

A few tense minutes after leaping out of the Fantasticar -and scaring the living crap out of his uncle and Mr. Fantastic in the process-, the web-swinging Ben Parker arrived at the alley shown to him by his Spider-sense. His aerial vantage point allowed him to see not only the mysterious frosty man and gun-toting blond, but the angry mob behind her...which his vision moments earlier didn't show him.

Trying to think of what his dad would have done in this situation, the newest Scarlet Spider landed on the side of one of the buildings, just in time to overhear the duo's last exchange before piping in himself.

"Hey sweet cheeks!", the wall-crawler quipped in a teasing manner as he quickly fired off two balls of webbing...one aimed at the attractive blond's eyes, and the other at the barrel of the gun. "Hasn't anyone ever told you that you shouldn't play with guns?"

"Christ..What a mess.."

Private Investigator Lou Ramone stands outside of the building in which his office was located. He's about 5'8, scrawny, dressed in a shabby looking white leisure suit. His black hair is greased back, the smell of cheap cologne follows him everywhere he goes. There was a riot going on, it actually happened quite frequently where Lou lived. Frequent or not, they never quite endeared themselves to the man, so he preferred to not get himself involved, keep his hands clean.

A bit cold, he shoves his hands into his pockets, where he kept his cell phone, wallet, and a lighter. A frequent employer had told him it was always a good idea to have a rest period in between his jobs, kept the heat off him. It was advice he took to heart, it'd been about two or three weeks since he last took any work.. But unfortunately, Lou could only live on white bread for so long, and with rent coming up on him, it was time to get some cash, pronto.

He dropped the cigarette and crushed it under his foot, before heading back into his office..

"Bad girl voice? Haven't you got better material? Nevermind, let's just cut to the chase. I have better things to do."

Viktoria had approached Nick and was prepared to pull the trigger thus fulfilling her missive from Nathaniel Kelvin when her attention was drawn to the voice calling out to her from the rooftops. She was almost under the assumption that the elder Kelvin had sent a small detachment to ensure her work was completed and the thought made her disappointed that Nathaniel wouldn't trust her but she soon found her train of thought derailed by a mass of sticky webbing was blasted into her eyes and across the barrel of her gun. Not my good gun, Viktoria thought to herself as she frantically tried to tug on her gun to free it from the webbing and tried to rub the webbing from her eyes by pulling it from her face. She let out a shriek of rage as she found both were impossible.

"Who said I was playing? If you're so jealous, get in line and I'll come to you after I've finished with Nick."

"This is it..." Rogue said, spotting the action taking place down below from the rooftops. Alicia, Hope and Pixie were on the roof with her, Shadowcat was inside a wall watching the action, waiting for her cue. With the distraction the Scarlet Spider so timely provided, they had their opening to save the mutant in distress.

"Okay girls, block her off, then ah'll give Kitty the okay to phase the boy through the ground and we'll get out of here."

"Oh...no good Rogue," Hope chimed in, sensing the boys powers, "his body temperature is way below freezing. If you touch him..."

"That's a'ight," Rogue interrupted, "Pixie, once the wall is up, we'll need a portal to drop him through to our safe zone at the mansion. Kitty, once he's through, phase me under the ground and ah'll take out the Purifiers, give 'em one heck of a headache. We'll see if we can't mess up blondie's day too. While we're takin' care ah business, the rest of y'all go through the portal and make sure the kid is safe. We'll meet up with you later. Got it? Let's go girls."

Alicia was ready to engage in a more violent manner, but she noticed something about the assassin that gave her pause. The facial structure...the hair and eyes were wrong, but could it be? She shook her head, she knew she had a job to do, but she didn't want to take the risk. She decided to remain passive and not burst the girl into flames. Pyras pointed her hands at the ground between the mutant and the assassin, focusing hard. She was still getting used to her powers. At first, all she could make were explosions that appeared spontaneously when her powers flared. Only now could she create spark, which would erupt into a controlled burn. Beads of sweat rolled down her face, but she finally got it right, and a wall of fire erupted between the mutant and the assassin, eliminating the line of sight. Once that was established, PIxie opened up her portal, letting Nick drop right through.

Nick was more than a little surprised that the wall of fire spontaneously shot up between himself and the assassin, wondering if this was some new napalm weapon he didn't know about, or if another mutant was attacking him. He didn't have much time to think about it, because he soon found himself falling through the ground.

"AHHHHHH!" He shouted out in fear as he fell through the ground, to another ground. He landed hard in a field, which quickly began to freeze over due to his residual negative body temperature. Looking around, he didn't recognize where he was, or what was going on, or who was doing this to him. Today could not get much weirder.

As Nick fell through the portal, Rogue was already getting busy. Hope jumped through the portal following Nick, and Rogue was on the ground, and quickly phased through by Shadowcat. Kitty kept Rogue's head just above the ground so she could see what she was going, and she reached out her hands and touched as many Purifiers as she could, knocking them out cold. Once the majority of the gang was down, Kitty sent her back to the portal, and she jumped through under cover of fire. Once Rogue was clear, Alicia let the fire dissipate, and jumped through herself, leaving Kitty behind. She didn't want this assassin getting away, so she would reach up on the way back and try to phase her legs through the cement, sticking her in place before going back to the surface, and leaping through the portal as it closed off.

Viktoria had continued to pull on her gun to free it from the sticky web and pull on the glob of web still stuck to her face and what had been her free hand when she felt the heat of a wall of pure flame rise rapidly in front of her. As the webbing from her face and gun fell away, she noticed that not only had the Purifier mob vanished; her prey had, too. Viktoria knelt to the ground and patted around the pavement of the alley in disbelief before quickly getting back to her feet and looking to the rooftops for any sign of what could've caused the disappearance of such a large group. The wall-crawler seemed to have vanished as well. Viktoria felt a sense of dread at the thought of what was going to happen when she reported to Nathaniel Kelvin at Purifiers HQ to debrief him on her mission. How in the world am I going to explain this? She was thinking to herself when she suddenly felt the ground below her begin to sink. This wasn't possible; how could the cement be absorbing her like this? Viktoria was almost certain that another mutant force was behind this. She pounded the ground in frustration as she tried to think of a way to free herself from being stuck shin deep in the street. If Viktoria waited for the police to dig her out, she would certainly have to explain herself and there would be public discussion about what happened. Viktoria would have enough to deal with back at Purifier HQ; she didn't want to add more to her already loaded plate. Viktoria quickly surveyed her surroundings and took a deep breath, holding it as she closed her eyes. She didn't want to reveal herself under these circumstances but she had to take her chances and use her powers sparingly. Viktoria exhaled slowly and tried to bring a vision of the alleyway into her mind before she finally teleported to the surface. She brushed her legs off before checking her surroundings for any onlookers. When she was absolutely that the coast was clear, Viktoria put her Beretta in its holster before backing her way out of the alley and running toward the place where she would meet the elder Kelvin, fearing her debriefing and his reaction.

- A Darker Place For Your Mind To Be -

Gabe now found himself in a dimly lit hallway, the walls lined with doors as far as he could see. He was so confused and didn't know where to go, he called out but it was all for not. Gabe decided his best chance was to go down the hall and maybe he could find a way out. After a while of walking in a seemly endless straight line, he finally stopped when he noticed he had passed the same painting multiple times. He stopped in front of the door that was right next to the painting and it happened to be marked with the number one. Gabe turned and ran down the hall as fast as he could and stopped at the painting again, looking at the door to the right and saw that it was the same door as before. He had been in an endless straight line, he was stuck in a loop. Gabe thought for a moment and decided that he was going to try the doors and see if any of them led to a way out. He stood in front of the first door, his hand shaking as he reached out for the handle, slowly turning it and swinging the door open. What met Gabe's eyes was a scene he was all to familiar with, but it was a little different. A young blonde man was on his knees in front of Azuriel, but Azuriel wasn't doing the same thing he had done to Gabe, Azuriel had one of his swords drawn and was holding it over the young man's head and with a blink of eye he flicked his sword and the young man's head was split in two pieces. The scene faded like a cloud and was replaced by another young man who quickly got the same treatment as the first man. It became clear to Gabe that he was watching Azuriel's memories of searching for a body to take over. The scene suddenly changed again but this time it showed something very familiar to Gabe. Gabe was watching himself on his knees in front of Azuriel, but this time it was different he could understand what Azuriel was saying. "Finally I have found my body! I can finally be whole once again," Azuriel said to the Gabe that was kneeled on the ground. Before when Gabe had been in the position all he heard was Azuriel speaking in tongues, "What did he mean? His body?" Just as Gabe finished his question a force violently threw him into the hall way and the number one door slammed shut behind him. The hall way then started changing, it was shirking. Gabe stood in one spot until everything stopped moving, and when it did, he was standing in front of a single door with four walls all around him. His only choice was to open the door in front of him which he did. This time his eyes were fixed on two figures standing in the middle of an empty field, he noticed one was Azuriel and the other was unknown to him. "Azuriel you must find another mutant to take over, but remember once fused in this way you will be bonded together and no magic will free you. It is not until the death of the mutant will you be able to claim the power for your own and move on to another victim," the stranger said to Azuriel, "This time I want you to find a mutant with a rapid healing ability so you can take more damage with out risk, but this one can be tricky with the power the mutant possesses he could over come you and he in turn can take everything we have worked for." Azuriel nodded and took off into the sky, and the scene faded away. "WHAT? I'm not a mutant," Gabe said with confusen. Gabe stood there for a moment when a hole opened in the floor and he dropped out of the hall way and back into his own mind, when he landed he heard Azuriel speaking to him, "Now I can't have you running free that long, you might find something I don't want you to," Azuriel said with a laugh, "To fix your confusion let me just unlock some of your old memories for you so you can see what you really are." Images flashed before Gabe's mind, things long forgotten for different reasons. When he was five years old he cut his own finger off with a kitchen knife and it grew back before his parents ran into the room and took the knife from his hand. When he was 16 he wrapped his new car around a tree and sent his body flying out the windshield, someone had called the police from their house but by the time the cops showed up his bones and body were healed and he had walked off. When he was 22 years old he took a hockey punk to the mouth and he swallowed his teeth, but when he had the doctor check him all his teeth were in his mouth and whiter then ever. Other images flashed through, minor cuts, bruises, and such that went away in a flash. Azuriel was right, Gabe was a mutant and this is the first time he realized and now he was going to die. Gabe yelled in a mix of emotions, he wanted out of this place and he wanted control. Then suddenly he was flying through the air, but he could only see out of one eye and noticed he couldn't control one half of his body. "WHAT!? How is this possible? How did you get out!?! Azuriel barely got his words out when Gabe's body began plummeting to earth because Gabe had collapsed the wing he controlled. "******** you Azuriel!" Gabe yelled as his body crashed into the middle of Central Park. The force knocking both Gabe and Azuriel out and putting Gabe's body at least ten feet under ground.

Nick crash landed in the field, followed quickly by the five X-Men girls. The portal closed, and he quickly discovered that he wasn’t in New York anymore. In fact, he couldn’t even see the city. He was surrounded by trees, somewhere far away from normal civilization. There was a more immediate threat facing him than being stranded in nature, because now he had five battle hardened X-Men were also surrounding him, four of which he knew. He tried backing away from them, not trusting the mutants who had essentially just abducted him by surprise. Just because they got him away from the Purifiers and the assassin, didn’t mean he felt he was safe. In his eyes, the X-Men were still the enemy, especially high profile femme fatales such as these.

“Pixie: Teleporter. Rogue: Power Drainer. Hope Summers: Mutant-Copycat. Shadowcat: Phaser…” Nick prattled off a condensed version of his encyclopedic knowledge of the known mutants, a compulsive behavior he developed from childhood when his father would drill him with surprise quizzes about known mutant ‘terrorists’, making sure Nick was prepared for the inevitable war between the species. Now every time Nick ran in to a known mutant, he couldn’t help but immediately shoot off the mutant’s profile, making sure he remembered its combat techniques and powers to develop a strategy for possible battle. The fifth mutant, however, he didn’t know.

“Well it seems you know us, well, most of us. Let me introduce you to one of our newer students. Meet Alicia Allerdyce, daughter of…” Kitty Pryde began, but was quickly interrupted.

“Saint-John Allerdyce, Pyro, Brotherhood mutant and terrorist. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree?” Nick finished.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
“Well now you do know all of us, how about you introduce yourself frosty?” Alicia asked politely, if a bit teasingly. She had heard it all about her father by now, everyone was critical of him, but she knew her father was the Saint he was so properly named as. Nick glared at the mutants, still not trusting them as far as he could throw them.

“Sorry if I’m a little less than cordial, but how do I know you didn’t just save me to execute me yourself? I still can’t even stand on my own two feet thanks to that damn bullet, so what’s stopping you but me giving you the information you need?” Nick replied, quite defiantly.

“Ah’m sorry…why would we want to execute you after risking our lives to save your but from that mob?” Rogue asked.

“Don’t play stupid, I’m a Purifier. You mutant spies were probably scoping out our rally waiting for your chance to attack it,” Nick barked back angrily. Obviously the emotions over the past hour had caught up with him and he was lashing out.

"Wait…you’re a Purifier? How is that possible? You’re a mutant!” Pixie asked in great confusion.

“I never asked to be a mutant. I was born a good, American human. My dad taught me about what you mutant terrorist organizations do, and I joined the Purifiers to stop it. I found out I was a mutant when I was sixteen, but that didn’t meant I changed my mind about what the X-Men, the Brotherhood, and other rogue mutants do to this world. Now my little secret is out, and my own family wants me dead. So why don’t you just leave me here with my bum leg and get the hell away from me?” Nick explained, his powers finally returning him to his normal body temperature, revealing his human form. The X-Men were confused to say the least, but that didn’t mean their mission had changed.

“Well we can leave you here, but we can’t leave you alone. You’re at the X-Mansion, where you’ll be safe from the Purifiers. No Purifiers have ever breached these walls, and so you can stay here and lie low for a while, even attend our University if you choose,” Kitty explained.

“…What? The X-Mansion…” Nick said, looking behind him to find the front gates of the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning. The hidden base of the X-Men on the East Coast. The location of half of the mutants known to mankind. “How could you bring me here? Knowing who I am now…how could you let me stay here? What makes you think that I won’t sabotage your facility and lead the Purifiers here?”

“We all have had our time with the devil,” Rogue answered, “aint none of us a saint. We all have things in our past we wish we aint done, but that’s why we’re here. We’re here so that we can learn to use our powers, to help not just humanity or mutant-kind, but the world. We’re here to protect those who can’t protect themselves, and you wanna protect humanity. If you wanna accomplish that, we can help you, and maybe get’cha a little payback on your Purifier buddies. So you can try and sabotage our home, or you can get some medical attention for you leg and learn how to use those powers of yours to protect the people you love.”

It took Nick a while. He was reluctant, but amazingly, what Rogue was saying made a little bit of sense. The Purifiers wouldn’t stop hunting him until he was dead, but the one place they couldn’t get to him was the X-Mansion. Maybe he could use this place to get a little training, then get out when the getting was good and make it on his own. Either way he looked at it, he wasn’t getting far with this leg injury. He had no choice. Nick nodded, not looking any of the X-Men in the eye. Rogue smiled and nodded to Pixie, who opened another portal, one leading to the infirmary, where orderlies would carry Nick into his room to tend to his leg with their healing technology. Needless to say, Nick was wary about the deal, but there wasn’t anything he could do about it right now.

Viktoria jogged the paths she had taken moments before when she had trailed Nick Kelvin before attempting to assassinate him on orders from his father, only now her paths were clear of the Purifier mob that had followed her after the young Kelvin had been outed as a mutant. Some had been scared away when she'd fired shots into the air when they'd tried to interfere with her work but Viktoria had no clue what had happened to the rest; there was no trace of them when the webs had fallen from her face and gun and she'd been drawn into the pavement up to her shins. She was still trying to wrap her mind around what could've cause the disappearance but her thoughts were primarily occupied with the fear of her boss. Nathaniel Kelvin would not be pleased that she'd failed and Viktoria was petrified because she'd witnessed how intense he could be when any of his subordinates displeased him. Maybe I should lay low for awhile, she thought to herself as she jogged across a near vacant, trash-littered Times Square. The pastor had presumably been dismissed after the abrupt interruption of the rally and a crew had come to dismantle the stage, pack up the podium, send the sound equipment back to the rental company, and clean their mess so the Purifiers would stay in the City of New York's good graces. Viktoria stood in the middle of Times Square and glanced back toward the tower she knew Kelvin had hidden himself in. The Purifiers kept a bevy of shell companies across the five boroughs and their leader would rotate between offices as needed for security reasons and to be nearby for rallies like the one they'd had today. She took a deep breath and strolled across the remainder of the Square toward the tower, opening one of the massive glass doors before crossing the sparsely furnished lobby with Italian marble on the ceiling, walls, and floors. Viktoria didn't pay the secretary any mind and headed straight for the elevators. Once inside the cabin, she turned to face the closing doors and inspected the panel for the floor number where she knew Kelvin's offices were housed. A few long, tense moments passed between the time she pressed the button and when she arrived on Kelvin's floor. Viktoria was dreading coming face to face with a man she secretly loathed but this meeting had to happen. She left the elevator cabin and crossed the floor toward her boss' suite, knocking the mahogany door lightly before waiting for permission to enter.

The door remained closed for several long moments after Viktoria knocked. Two motion sensitive security cameras trained on her, watching her every move as she stood at the massive double doors. Finally, the automated system opened the doors slowly, revealing the lavishly furnished office, and her boss with his back turned behind his mahogany desk. He neither spoke, nor turned his chair to face her. His attention seemed focused on whatever it was in his lap, and did not even acknowledge Viktoria's presence. Instead, one of two bodyguards motioned with one hand for the assassin to enter.
