I finally wathced the show, and the white man who was turned black was a little too comfortable using the N word. The woman who was turned black to white actually still doesn't look white. The white girl turned black was the most realistic looking make up job through.

I was thinking something similar.

[I totally forgot about this show!! I'll have to catch it the next time it's on! surprised ]

[Phew! I finally saw the show!!

The kids (the black son and the white daughter) have the most amazing transformations. surprised They both look funny, but still very cute as the opposite race. xd

I think that in a way, the white father is right: He says that the black father is constantly looking for racism and that as far as he sees it, (being white in black makeup), he's treated the same as he was before. I like the white father's "philosophy" that you get back what you project; if you are out there projecting a positive, non-suspicious attitude, then that's likely what you'll get back from other people.

BUT, the black father is also just in getting a little miffed at the fact that the white father seems to dismiss all the bad things the black father has experienced. I don't like that the white father says, "I think you're looking for things that aren't there." Those thoughts and ideas, those tendancies of some white people to look down on/shy away from/not want to serve black people the same way they do white people are NOT the black father's imagination. rolleyes He's been through it, experienced it first hand, and he wants the white father to believe that, even if the white father (while in black makeup) never experiences racial prejudice himself. 3nodding

I don't like the way the black son isn't enthusiastic about this (in the episode I saw). He acts like he wants nothing out of this except to "pass," as if it's an exam in school. It's not an academic test, it's a trial--to be regarded in a spiritual/emotional/intellectual way. It's ment to make you step back and take a look at yourself and your actions, your beliefs and habits.

The black mother seems to think that she's here JUST to "school" the white family about the tribulations involved with being black. I haven't seen much else about her, but so far I don't really like her.

The white mother seems like a...eh, I dunno the word. I like how she seems eager to take from the experiment what knowledge and emotional growth she can, but she seems VERY in-the-dark about the whole "black thing," despite the fact that her side of the family was supposedly involved with the civil rights movement (correct me if I'm wrong).

So far, in my opinion, the white daughter is the best and most interesting character in the show. She seems eager to get into the experience, and outgoing enough and intelligent enough to actually come out of it seeing the world a little differently. In the very beginning, when the black family was trying to tell the white family how to act and how not to act and speak, the white daughter was saying something to the effect of, "I don't want this to be a bunch of bullshit. I don't want to feed into racial stereotypes, I want to act like myself, just in black makeup." I almost applauded her. "Damn right," I was thinking.

Anyone else have opinions on the characters?? Expectations for the next episides, etc??]

Were you reading my mind? xd

I saw the first episode (since that's the only one they played so far), and I remember thinking similar things to what you typed.

[nearly falls over with relief*

I'm glad that was the first episode! I thought I had missed it. xp

I'm looking forward to the next episode to see how this whole experiment goes, but I just hope it doesn't drag on and on for like 25 episodes. sweatdrop I mean, 2 weeks or a month or two of weekly episodes is enough...I really hope this isn't dragged out too far. I also don't want to see this go on like trading spouses has, and other "trade your-" reality shows.

So far the show seems decent, like something I would make a half-assed effort to catch everytime it's on. xd ]

since i'm not really hearing anything negative about the show itself, i'll give it a try. i unfortunately had class the night it premiered, so i missed it. i also hope that both families come off the show with more knowledge about each other.

now i'm just wondering how a family gets picked for something like this....

From what I keep hearing, I think it'll be a six week series (although I'm not sure how accurate that information is).

Are my mom and I the only ones who didn't think Bruno (the white dad) looked white in the first place?

[Yea, he is a bit dark. But his features scream "caucasian," and they continue to do so even through the black makeup. If anything, he looks Indian or Middle Eastern. xp ]

Black. White. is a good show. I didn't think I would like it as much as I do. Bruno gets on my nerves and I think he's using the N word a little too much. His wife is clueless and acts dumb sometimes. I don't think the black mother is doing a good job of passing as white because she looks like a light skinned black woman.

Yeah, that's what my mom said as well.

[Bruno uses the N-word a lot, but I think more annoying than that is the fact that he brings it up. He could say "N-word" instead of "******" but it still bugs me because that's not all this is about. Black people don't constantly walk around with the N-word being the only issue they have with white people. rolleyes Yet Bruno keeps referring to it as though it's the most prominent problem black people face. stare
Also, to make matters worse, the balck father has said that it stings when he hears the word from white people...
The black mother does look light-skinned instead of white, but like I said, I'm a LOT more interested in the kids than the adults. No matter what the adults take from this experience, the old adage of "you can/can't teach an old dog new tricks" only goes so far. Adults are notoriously set in their ways, and I would be VERY surprised if they showed any significant change in attitude by the end of the experiment.]
