When she pulled her hands away, she was not crying - but her face indicated that it was not long until that, too, would change. I want to understand. I want to.. I want to understand! She shook, and then collapsed, falling down into Malodore. She didn't know if it was prepared to catch her, and would have just as easily crumpled into its lap than fallen into its arms. When she did settle, however, her eyes lifted up to see Luce's tiny, adorable little face. And within it, she felt worry.
Oh, come here you terrible thing, she cried out, her arms reaching out to collect Luce in her arms and hold her close, to the delight of Ombra. The pup was more than happy to playfully attack Luce now that they were both together again.
It all seems so.. Riley's voice had become hushed, and quiet. The agony had fled. So soft. So unlike me. So unlike us. How did I become this way, Malodore? She looked up at the plague doctor quickly, desperate for answers.

"Soft? No, mia cara - you are not soft. When you say soft, what you mean is... weak, is it not? You are not weak. With your... your last breath, prior to your waking with the Bogeymen, the last thing you did was come to me, to protect me, even though doing so caused you great pain." It spoke so quietly, voice barely above a whisper. "I have seen you do the most astonishing things - you bested a number of Horsemen of War in combat trials, engaged in conversation and machinations with the Heir of Conquest. Your ambition is great. And your courage..."
It no longer had the journal, but it knew the words she'd written by heart, now. "You defied everything you knew in reaching out to us. Reaching out to me. That is not the act of a soft and weak being, mia cara." As Luce thumped her tail against the floor, licking Riley's face and resting her chin on the mindflayer's shoulders, Malodore opened its beak in a faint smile.
"You need not be as you were before - in fact, you cannot be so, just as I am no longer the Malodore I was before. We have both changed, in different ways, for different reasons... and there is no shame in that, I am learning. I had good teachers," it added, remembering Celeste's words. "Not understanding... there is no shame in that, either. You will learn, and you will make decisions based on what you learn, and you will become yourself. Whatever that means, in the end. I am grateful to have a second chance."

Riley felt every muscle relax, one by one, as she listened to Malodore regale every achievement it could remember. She heard the soft echo of pride in it's voice, and knew that it found her achievements as good as they sounded. Seeing the memories held little effect on her, as these were all things she would normally have done. But to hear them from Malodore's voice, and the way it simply hushed as it told her all that she had done, made her entire body shiver in delight.
All at once, she knew why she had fallen in love with the creature who held her in its arms. If she could know what love was, it alone would be worthy of such an honor.
Malodore. She whispered in a voice thick with emotion, and just a touch of adoration. The pups against her were forgotten for a moment, as she pulled herself up and stared at the plague doctor. Her skin felt warm, and flushed. Her body tingled in odd and delightful ways. It was charming, and terribly frightening, all at once. She enjoyed it as best as she could, for the first time ever.
Her eyes closed, and her head dipped just slightly as she reached out, brushing against the plague doctor's limbic system. The contact was jarring, but it wouldn't be the first - she'd seen it in its memories.
But it would be her first kiss. And a tiny sound of content left her as she did it.

"Si-" it began, and then its voice faltered and fell silent at the look in her eyes. It just watched her, unable to move - not wanting to move. Mia cara? it asked, a featherlight brush against her thoughts.
And then, -oh-, at the touch of her 'kiss'. The touch it had missed so much. It could have wept, at that moment; it did tremble, reaching for her, bending forward to brush the tip of its beak against her cheek. It had no words, just a rising and overwhelming sense of gratitude and affection, its love only tempered by its desire not to force her into anything.
A sense that she was perfect, just the way she was, in this moment.

Riley was not surprised in the least bit that Malodore did not fight against her kiss. But the way it enjoyed such an act intensified the experience to something she may not have been ready to handle. Thus, when the affection swept over her, a very heavy and dark blush rose up into her cheeks, and she let out the smallest, most private of giggles.
There is no question in my mind why I loved you, Malodore. She admitted easily. It was not a declaration of love - but it was a declaration, nonetheless.
Its beak was pressed against her cheek, and it made her features lift in lieu of a smile, finding the gesture so terribly sweet. But they were together, curled up and sharing intimate affections, on the floor of this room - with Vek not too far away. And she became suddenly very aware of that. So she pulled away just enough to look the plague doctor in the eye, and half-lidded eyes gave him a knowing look.
Prom. She reminded it, because it was clear they would have been perfectly content to remain there together forever.

There would have been a time - a mere two hours ago! - when the past tense on loved would have driven the plague doctor into the depths of despair. Now, however, it did nothing of the kind, only provoking the faintest pang, easily flattened. Past tense did not mean never...
... and, in fact, Malodore was immensely looking forward to this rediscovery.
"... Ah," it said, as she reminded it; it blinked, as if it had entirely forgotten. Which was at least partially true. "Si, of course..." Luce had moved off to the side, recognizing who the affection was for and not putting herself in the middle; she thumped her tail as Malodore looked in her direction. "Luce can take Ombra back to my room, at least." Slowly, it rose to its feet, holding its hands out to help her up at well.
"We could both use some lint rollers," it added, ruefully, looking at the white fur that now decorated its clothing.

There was something unbelievably comforting about this entire process, which was startling, because she was sure she should still be flustered and torn. When Malodore's attention turned to the pup, so did hers, and she reached out to collect Luce carefully into her arms. Malodore stood, but she remained seated for a moment, holding Luce up in both arms.
Luce. She repeated, watching for her reaction. Riley's face crunched up slightly, as the pup warmed her heart in ways she knew should never be warmed. Then she let Luce go, and plucked Ombra out of her dress, and set it on the floor beside the older female. Finally, Ombra remained where she was, flopping down and flipping around to lay on it's back. He yawned hugely, and wiggled his body as if begging for belly scritches. But Riley finally took Malodore's claws, and rose up elegantly to her feet instead. She brushed some of the fur off of her dress, and nodded in agreement.
There might be one in my room. She murmured this quietly, as though trying to remember. As usual, nothing came to her. Help me look?

Before Riley stood, Luce wagged her tail, meeting the mindflayer's gaze without hesitation. She licked where Riley's nose would have been, had she possessed one, then slid over and laid down next to Ombra once released, putting her chin down on the floor but keeping her ears perked up as she watched her two favorite people move about.
"Assolutamente," Malodore said, with a wry amusement in its voice. "While I removed a number of items from your room, I did not see much sentimental value in a lint-roller... though I did get a few ideas, when I went back and saw what I had collected. Reminded myself, rather."

Riley let Malodore lead her back into the bedroom, her hand refusing to let go of the claws after it had helped her up. She gave one last, disinterested look at the guard at the door, and then her face lit up like a scarelings. There was something.. so lovely about making Vek wait for them.
They disappeared into the bedroom, and she closed the door.
Ideas? She murmured curiously, when Malodore captured her attention once more. What do you mean?

"I left something outside," it said, mysteriously. "Nothing terribly grandiose, of course, given that I didn't have much time to plan... but, I assure you, next time I do have time to plan..."
It paused by the window, one claw idly tracing along the double-row of scratches it had made, so long ago. The edges had been sanded down by now, of course. "If all things are new, then I shall delight in them no less than you," it said, softly. "Just... promise me, you will stop me if I am being too... too strong, in my eagerness? Our strength is in our balance, and if that balance is gone, then so, too, is our strength. You will tell me, mia cara?"

It was a simple request, and she felt she could adhere to it.. or at least, make an effort. The idea of being too strong for her felt a little amusing.
I promise. She murmured sweetly, seating herself down on her bed. The soft swish of her plush skirts filled the room until they settled.
Now. Bring to me what you have outside. My curiosity is piqued. Her body bounced, very carefully, and just once, on the bed. ~Presents~

It chuckled, amused. "Then I shall fetch it at once, mia cara. One moment..." It looked back at the door, speculatively, and it glanced back at her with an impish air. "I do not believe I shall give signore Vek the pleasure of discomfiting me again, however..."
Malodore bent down and opened the box with the chain-link, folding ladder beneath the window. Pushing the window open, it let the ladder unfurl over the sill, clanking as it fell to the ground. Then, lightly, folding its wings tight to avoid clipping the window frame, it hurried down the ladder, heading for a set of bushes just below.
There hadn't been much left at the florist, but it had managed to procure three fairly perfect dead roses. These it pulled forth from its hiding place in the bush before scurrying back to the ladder, holding the flowers in its beak to free up its hands for climbing. It peered up at her, emanating mischief.

Riley's enthusiastic pause had her delay in reacting when Malodore disappeared out the window. She just stared at it for a moment in wonder, before she rose to her feet and threw herself at the window, concerned for its safety. Of course, Malodore was fine, and she watched it collect the flowers and put them in its beak. An overwhelming sense of deja vu hit her, and she leaned down until it was back against her window, at which point she moved away to give it room.
Malodore, this simply brilliant creature, had just climbed up a ladder into her bedroom window with flowers in it's beak.
Her face was dark, flushed with color, and she folded her arms in front of herself in an effort to look less woo'd than she felt.
It did not work.

Malodore quickly climbed back through the window; one wingspar caught on the frame, and it made an annoyed sound before freeing itself. Once both hooves were back on solid floor, it retrieved the flowers from its beak and offered them to her. "I am afraid the prom tonight had quite depleted the selection, but I thought these would suit, for now," it said, opening its beak in a smile.

Riley looked down at the roses for a moment, but her hands remained crossed, as though she was afraid to touch them. She just looked at them, drinking in the moment. Another first, for her. She recognized it for what it was, and the gesture sunk in deep. A deep breath rose and fell from her before she finally uncrossed her arms and took the flowers in both of her hands.
No one's ever given me flowers before. She whispered quietly, with a thick undertone of emotion wavering underneath the words. It was clear she was touched. She looked up at Malodore, and her eyes crinkled slowly as she smiled.
I love them. She admitted, pulling them close. Her hand reached out to brush against Malodore's mask, grazing the cheek with her fingertips. Thank you.
