"So I take it you had a lot to drink tonight," Katriel said after the Admiral left the room. She didn't want to think about the medic just yet, or her already racing heart would explode. "Do you always help defenseless young waitresses or am I a special case?"

He hung up the phone and looked at Katriel quietly for a while. "No" he said simply and quietly. He stood up and walked back to Katriel and then kneeled down in front of her. He unzipped her boot and said "This is going to hurt" The boot was too long for him to stabilize her leg while he took it off. He gently pulled the boot off and inspected her ankle. Just then there was a knock at the door. "EMS" came a shout from the other side. Azimov turned and yelled back "Come in!" A man and a woman walked in carrying some big red duffle bags. Azimov stood up and moved out of the way. The woman pulled some bandages and out and then walked back outside and the man knelt down beside her and said "My names Jim and that's my partner Katie. I'm a paramedic. What's your name?" He continued on asking her questions about what happened tonight while his partner came back in with a piece of cardboard and an icepack. She bent the cardboard in a U shape and set the paw inside of it and then wrapped it up.

"No? 'No' to which part?" Katriel cried. Azamov seemed to ignore her. She winced as he took off her boot--it hurt like hell--but her foot glad to be out of it. Then the medics came in and asked her name. "Kate. Kate Jones," she replied. She wasn't about to give her real name and have them track her. She lived below the radar and wanted to keep it that way. She spun him a story that was close to the truth--being a waitress down on her luck and taking a crappy job and having a drunk shove a chair in front of her, tripping over it and injuring her ankle. "It's not a big deal," she tried to convince them. "I just need some ice and an ace bandage."

"To all of it." Azimov said. He stood to the side silently, watching the medics and listening to Katriels story. Jim looked up at Azimov and then stood up. They both walked outside together. A few minutes later, Jim walked back inside with a clipboard. "Commander Sarei says he'll be paying for your medical bills. I just need you to sign here." He handed her the clipboard and his pen. "And the next page has a refusal waiver. If you don't want to go with us to the hospital and you want to refuse our care then feel free to sign it but know that the medical repercussions could be dire, leading up to death."

"Wait--WHAT?" Katriel cried. "Is this the military's version of ' come with me if you want to live?' How the heck could someone die from a sprained ankle?!?" She was starting to panic. She shouldn't be here. She should never have accepted Azimov's assistance. Now she was trapped and she couldn't even run. The wolf inside her rose to protect her and she could feel the prickling just under her skin that told her that a change was immanent if she didn't calm down. Her ears started to point at the tips and her teeth lengthened. She hunched over with her hands covering her ears and tried to control her breathing--right now, keeping her human cover was more important than appearing strong. She took slow, deep breaths until the prickling went away. "Ok, so...just what exactly is wrong with me and what do I waive?" she asked when she felt completely human again.

"Sorry" Jim said "It's just what I have to say for legal purposes. I'm obligated to inform you upon your request to go against medical advice that the consequences could lead up to death. It doesn't mean that you'll necessarily die from your injury, but I have to say it. Also, I can't give you a diagnosis. I am not qualified to do so because I'm not a doctor. I can say that it is one of three things. It might just be bruised, it could be a sprain or it could be fractured. I won't know until you have an x-ray and the doctors tell me what's wrong." Jim gave Katriel an apologetic look as if to make up for not being allowed to tell her what was wrong. "And just so you know, either way you choose, your friend has already given us the information we need so it will be free for you."

"Well, that's good news at least. I can hardly keep my truck running; I have no idea how I could afford medical bills," she grumbled. She turned to Azimov. She felt beholden to him, since he was trying to take care of her...even if his motives were mysterious. "So...do I need to go to a hospital or can I just promise not to put weight on it and go home? I mean, so far this medic hasn't told me anything I didn't already know, and I know it takes a lot of torque to break an ankle, so the odds are in my favor that everything will be fine in a few days, right?"

Azimov smiled "You probably just sprained it." he said. "Still, it might be a good idea to get an x-ray just in case. But that's your call." he walked over to stand next to her chair.
"I've gotta get over to MTAC in less than an hour." He handed her a cup of coffee. "If you want, I can take you home afterwards. They won't keep me long. They just want this" He held up a yellow folder.

An x-ray was probably a good idea, just to be on the safe side. A lame wolf was, after all, a dead wolf. "Fine, I'll get the x-ray. It won't take too long, right?" she asked. She took the coffee and just held it. She didn't drink coffee as a rule because it upset her digestion (and gave her gas) and that was absolutely the last thing she needed right now. She looked at the yellow folder in Azimov's had. "Looks important. Will you need a full squadron to deliver or is this a solo black-ops mission?"

"Heh, funny." He smiled again with his ice blue eyes almost betraying his kind intentions. "The X-ray should only be a few minutes if you go with the medics. If I took you it would take hours to get through the waiting room."
The medics pulled the gurney into the room and helped Katriel to sit on it and Azimov followed them out. He slid his leather jacket on and pulled out his keys. He tucked the folder into his jacket and said "See ya there." Jim shook hands with him and hopped into the back of the ambulance with Katriel.
The sound of Azimovs' bike was unmistakable.
Jim pulled out a clunky looking laptop and started typing. After a few minutes he set it aside and said "We're here."
He hopped out the back and wheeled her inside with Katies help. Jim held out his hand to help Katriel stand so she could get into a wheelchair. "The nurse will be right back to take you to radiology." He said. Just then, Azimov walked through the door accompanied by a woman in scrubs.
"Here you go Commander."
He nodded to the nurse.

Katriel thought she saw a glimmer of something...nice...in Azimov's blue eyes. So she decided to go against her instincts and trust him. She focused on her breathing all the way to the hospital. If she didn't, she might have changed in the ambulance and then the cat would have been out of the bag. Or wolf. Or whatever. At the hospital, she was wheeled around corners at a blurring speed until she lost all sense of direction in the building. Every white wall looked the same. Then Azamov came in and she felt relief wash over her. At least that was sane. "Hey, Speedy," she called and raised her hand in greeting.

He smiled at her again "What took you so long?" His grin was a bit frightening and goofy at the same time. A nurse walked in and flipped the page on her chart. "Katriel?" She glanced over at Azimov who looked rather intimidating in his black leather jacket. He waved at her with his goofy grin and she said "We'll be back in just a moment."

"Ok, just don't forget me!" she called nervously. So the hospital had her real name now. That sucked. But at least they didn't have her last name or nationality. That would make it harder for them. But then, "Katriel" wasn't exactly a common name. Azimov's goofy smile gave her hope for the best.

"I'll be waiting here for you."
The nurse took Katriel back into the X-ray room and had her lay on a table while she took a couple of X-rays. Then she said "All done. I'll take you back to the ER and the doctor will come out to see you in a little while."
"Hey, you came back in one piece." Azimov said when he saw her wheeled back into the room. The nurse left and closed the door behind her.

"It was a near thing. I had to battle a dozen interns with clicky pens and solve the riddle of the dreaded night-shift nurse. I might have gotten radiation poisoning, but it's too soon to tell," Katriel replied with a straight face.
